A Walk in the Park
Marlene hooked her arm around Dorcas’ shoulders lovingly. Dorcas glanced at her and smiled. Marlene looked at her partner, taking in their profile as the two of them walked along. “Are you cold?” Marlene asked, pulling Dorcas closer to her side. Dorcas’ teeth chattered quietly, answering Marlene’s question. Dorcas laughed and nodded, rubbing their hands together. Marlene halted and unwound the scarf from around her neck.
“Marls, no you’ll get cold now!” Dorcas objected as Marlene arranged the scarf around their neck. Marlene made sure Dorcas was wrapped up before bringing her finger to their lips to shush them. “Shush. I’m fine.” she said, bringing both hands up to cup Dorcas’ face. She couldn’t tear her eyes from them. Their hazel eyes shone in the winter sun. Marlene’s eyes travelled across Dorcas’ face. “Marls, we’re blocking the path.” Dorcas stated, an amused grin on their face. Marlene rolled her eyes and grabbed Dorcas’ hand. She began jogging to the nearest free bench, pulling Dorcas in tow.
The two of them sat down, huddling together. Dorcas enclosed Marlene’s hands in their own and settled them in their lap. Marlene gazed around, taking in the beauty of the white blanket that shrouded the entire park. She watched mothers with laughing children walk past and dogs run around in excitement. Then she looked at Dorcas. “Marls, you’re looking at me again.” Dorcas grinned, turning to look at Marlene. “I am. I can’t help it.” She charmed, winking at her partner. Dorcas rolled their eyes and leaned across to rest their head on Marlene’s shoulder. Marlene placed a gentle kiss amongst Dorcas’ hair, grateful to have her person.
