Grumpy Pants

Grumpy Pants

“ARGGHH!” Remus seethed, tossing his headphones across the desk. He slammed his hand down on the desk in frustration. “Stupid fucking things.” He bit out. It was typical that his headphones would break when he needed them most. His history exam was tomorrow and he was in desperate need of music for the nerves. So it was only natural that his headphones would miraculously refuse to function.

“Hey hey hey!” Sirius soothed, appearing in the doorway from the next room. “Remus, hey, it’s okay” He padded over and folded Remus into his arms, stroking Remus’ back. “Shhh, it’s all good. We’re all okay. Okay?” Sirius comforted, pulling back slightly and keeping his hands firmly on Remus’ shoulders to ground him. Remus nodded tightly, jaw still tense.

“What’s the problem? Whatever it is, we can figure it out. I’ll help you.” Sirius gently brought his hand to Remus' chin and lifted it so they were looking at each other. Remus exhaled deeply, “my stupid fucking headphones won’t work. And I need them.” he explained, brow creasing with renewed frustration. Sirius raised his thumb and smoothed across his boyfriend’s eyebrows. He smiled a small and knowing smile.

“Okay. Well right now I don't have a solution for the headphones…” Sirius began, and before Remus could make a sarcastic comment he continued, “But! There is something I have that can help with music.” Sirius finished, with an air of mystery. He noticed Remus’ mildly intrigued look. “C’mon grumpy pants. I’ll show you.” Sirius rose, swished his hair back and held out a hand. Remus took it and let himself be led into the next room.

Sirius brought Remus into the living room and told him to close his eyes. Remus reluctantly complied, allowing himself to be seated on the sofa. “Right. Just a minute.” Sirius said as he let go of Remus’ hand. He continued to mumble to himself as he fiddled with something. Remus sighed, but decided to humour Sirius since he had nothing else to do.

Remus was not expecting to hear the opening chords of Diamond Dogs fill the room. “Open.” Sirius instructed, and Remus opened his eyes. Directly in front of him on the table was a record player. Playing David Bowie. Remus felt his jaw slacken, his mouth falling open in disbelief.

“It’s good, right?!” Sirius enthused, jigging around the room hideously out of time to the music. Remus stared. It was certainly something. “It’s.. It’s not the same.” he whispered, feeling a pang of loss for his headphones. But he couldn't tear his gaze from the record player. He had always wanted one.

Sirius danced over and collapsed on the sofa beside Remus. “No, it’s not the same. But it’s the best we’ve got. So enjoy it.” he nudged Remus, a cheeky grin plastered on his beautiful face. Remus glanced at Sirius, and found he couldn't hold back a smile any longer. He linked hands with Sirius and planted a small kiss on his cheek. “Thank you” he whispered. Sirius smiled, squeezed Remus’ hand and got up to go back to dancing. This time, Remus joined him.
