The note that Alice wrote

The note that Alice wrote

“Alice hurry up!” Lily called from halfway down the stairs of the Gryffindor girls dorm. “Just  a minute!” Alice replied, perching on the edge of her bed and clutching her notebook in her hand. She had to check. She needed to know if this was a pattern.

She flipped the book open and leafed through the pages to the next empty one. A small single piece of paper slid out from the book and landed noiselessly in her lap. Alice felt her face grow pink and grinned. So it was a pattern.

Alice took the paper in her hand and eyed the scrawling handwriting that marked it. She read:

Alice,

You look beautiful today. Just like everyday.

Alice smiled again and folded the note before placing it back where she found it. She carefully flipped back a few pages to reread the last note she had found from a couple of days ago. This one said:

A,

Your eyes are like glistening emeralds. I could look at them all day.

“ALICE!” Lily yelled up the stairs again. Alice sighed. She decided she would continue this later. She checked her watch and saw that it was now 8.15am. She hugged the notebook to her stomach and made her way down to the common room.

Alice resolved to get some of her Herbology homework done before her lesson at 9am. After entering the common room, she made her way over to her favourite desk beside the window. Alice noticed that someone had placed a cup of tea there. Her brows furrowed in confusion, she looked around the desk while she tucked a loose lock of her short dark hair behind her ear. Alice sat down and lifted the cup to reveal a note. She read it under her breath:

A,

Good Morning, love. I hope your day is full of joy.

Alice once again felt her cheeks go pink as she slipped the note into her notebook. She looked up and glanced around the room. She was looking for someone.

Her eyes found who she was looking for. Across the room, Frank Longbottom was sitting in an armchair, pretending to read his Potions textbook. Their eyes latched onto each other. Alice’s blush refused to subside. She smiled a small smile at Frank, who grinned back and quickly trained his gaze on his page. Alice vaguely wondered if he knew that his book was upside down.

As she watched Frank’s cheeks turn pink while he turned his book the right way up, Alice had an idea. Alice found a quill in the pen pot on the desk and opened her notebook. She put her quill to the page and started writing. When she was finished, she replaced the quill in the pen pot and gently tore the page from her notebook. She folded it into quarters and held it close to her.

Her eyes found Frank’s once again, and she motioned for him to come over. She stifled a giggle as Frank pointed to himself and looked behind him, checking she meant him. Alice nodded definitively. She shuffled up the bench to allow room for him to sit down.

Frank appeared at her side, hovering nervously. “Hi.” He said, fiddling with the sleeve of his jumper. Alice patted the bench beside her, and smiled up at him. Frank complied, sitting down carefully. Alice felt a flutter in her stomach. She shuffled closer to him so that there was no space between them.

“Frank.” She grinned up at him. “Alice” he smiled back down at her. Alice produced the folded note, holding it up for Frank to take. Frank glanced at the paper and then back at Alice. Their fingers brushed as he took the note from her hand, and Alice could’ve sworn she felt sparks fly.

Alice’s fingers slowly found Frank’s spare hand, and she gradually intertwined their hands together. Frank paused to stare down at their hands. Alice squeezed his hand in reply and she watched as Frank read her note. She watched intently as his eyes travelled across her writing, taking it in. Frank turned to her, and Alice could see the emboldenment in his eyes. He placed the note on the table and let go of her hand. Frank took Alice’s face in his hands and gently pressed their lips together.

The note lay on the table, haphazardly placed next to Alice’s notebook and her secret collection of past notes. This note would forever be known as the note that Alice wrote. The note that started everything. It read:

F,

You can look at my eyes all day. But only if I can look at yours all day.
