Sirius woke to the sun streaming in through the gap in the curtains, beaming down right into his eyes. He grumbled as he brought his arm up to shield his face. It was not his favourite way to wake up, if he was being honest.

He laid there for a while with his eyes closed, basking in the gentle quiet of the morning. He was just pondering how he should spend his day when a large shadow appeared, blocking out the light of the sun.

Sirius opened one eye, peering at the shadow-caster.

“Happy Birthday, Pads!” James yelled down into Sirius’ face, pouncing on his bed and sitting down heavily. Sirius sighed with a hesitant smile. He rubbed his eyes and sat up.

“Morning Prongs, thanks.” He replied, stretching his arms above his head. Sirius should’ve known James would be more excited about his birthday than he was himself.

“C’mon, up! Time for the birthday morning run!” James demanded, rubbing his hands together in anticipation. Sirius scoffed. “You can sod off with that! It’s my birthday, I should have the day off” Sirius countered, looking at the other boy incredulously.

James stuck his bottom lip in a pout. “Fine. But don’t blame me when you don’t make the Quidditch team.” James teased as he got up off the bed and pulled his trainers on. Sirius picked up a rogue sock from his bedside table and lobbed it at James’ back as he left the dorm.

Sirius stretched again, letting out a deep sigh. He laid back down, putting his arms behind his head. Sirius stared at the ceiling, silently hoping he would get a chance to see Reg today.

He stayed like that for a while, thoughts swimming around his head. Really, Sirius thought, he was just procrastinating. Just because it was his birthday, didn’t mean there weren't any classes. He really ought to get up.

Just as he was about to move, Sirius felt a weight settle itself on the bed beside him. He raised his head to see who had come to bother him now.

Remus. Remus sat, watching him quietly. He was still in his pyjamas, hugging a knee to his chest. Sirius sat up again, leaning against the head of the bed. “Morning, Moony” Sirius smiled at the other boy.

Remus grinned at him, and Sirius couldn’t help but notice the way the sun shone on his face. It made his freckles glow and his hazel eyes light up. Sirius caught himself as he was admiring Remus.

“Happy Birthday” Remus said, quietly. Sirius’ smile didn’t disappear. He gestured for Remus to come closer and extended his arm out. Remus settled into his side, head on Sirius’ shoulder. Sirius rested his own face against Remus’ soft tawny hair.

“I brought you some chocolate” Remus mumbled, fishing a small bar of chocolate from his pyjama pocket and passing it to Sirius. Sirius took it, opening it and breaking it in half. He passed half back to Remus and placed the other half in his mouth.

“Thank you.” Sirius whispered, before kissing the top of Remus’ head. He pulled Remus in closer to him, never wanting to let him go. Remus seemed to recognise this, and nestled in further. Sirius could not stop smiling.

The two sat there together, comfortable in each other’s company. “Happy Birthday.” Remus repeated, gently. He raised his head to gaze up at Sirius’ face. Sirius looked back down at him, his grin still plastered on his face. He bent down slightly to place a firm kiss on Remus’ lips. They smiled at each other. This was the best way to spend a birthday. Classes could wait.
