Harry was perched on an old wooden chair in the study. He gazed out of the window, following the rusty autumn leaves as they fell from the trees. The fire was crackling in the background, casting a warm orange glow on the room. He scratched his chin with his quill and pushed his glasses up his nose. Harry looked back down at the desk, pondering the start of his homework. He heaved a sigh and put his quill down on his page before reaching up to run a frustrated hand through his hair.
“Aren’t you meant to be doing your assignment, mister?” Remus strolled into the room with both hands occupied. He was carrying a mug in each, and his wand was tucked precariously behind his ear. Harry slumped down on the desk, covering his page with his arms. “I can’t.” he explained in a huff. Remus gently placed the two mugs on the tabletop and Harry promptly spotted that they were both full of hot cocoa. His face lit up as he reached out for the mug before him.
“Ahem. Not yet, mister. For one - it’s still too hot to drink, and for two - you haven’t done your work.” Remus chided, a small grin playing on his face. He pulled another chair closer to Harry’s. “Why can’t you do it?” Remus asked as he smoothed his hands down the front of his jumper, dusting off any rogue dog hairs. Harry watched as Remus sat down and pulled his wand from behind his ear. He studied Remus’ face for any real anger, sweeping his gaze across the freckles and scars that littered his features.
“It’s too hard. I don’t like potions and I don’t like Snape.” Harry said petulantly, as he folded his arms across his chest in defiance. Remus raised his eyebrows. “Well that makes two of us. Potions isn’t hard, here, let me see.” he shuffled closer to Harry and skimmed over the textbook next to Harry’s page. Harry sat up straight as Remus passed him his cup of cocoa and began explaining the uses of Asphodel.
Sirius peered around the doorway, listening intently to Remus’ gentle voice as he helped Harry. He felt himself smile as he watched them. He watched Remus in his raggy jumper as he reached up to ruffle his tawny hair. He watched Harry scrunch up his face in concentration as he tried to understand. He watched them. His family. Sirius grinned his grin and decided that he needed to be in on the fun.
Remus put down the quill and looked over to Harry to check he was still listening. Harry looked back at him, awe written in his eyes. Remus felt himself turning red as he fiddled with his fingers, when all of a sudden he felt a sharp jerk under his elbow.
A shaggy black dog nuzzled his way into the scene, licking at Remus’ face and making Harry giggle. “Padfoot!” Harry yelled, reaching over to bury his face in the long blalck fur. Remus wrapped his arms around the two of them lovingly. His family.
