The Secret Skill

The Secret Skill

Sirius sat at the dorm window, tongue poking out the corner of his lips. Remus looked up from his book to hazard a longer glance at him than usual. The long haired boy was hunched over, hands in his lap, fussing over something Remus couldn’t quite see. Brow furrowed, Remus abandoned his book in favour of sitting up to get a better look at the other boys’ activity.

Sirius muttered in french, clearly frustrated. Remus, curiosity getting the better of him, pushed himself up off the bed. He padded over to where Sirius was sitting. “What are you doing?” he asked, quietly. Sirius looked up, eyes wide, startled by Remus.

“Oh, uh, I’m painting my nails. Or… trying to, at least.” a small blush flushed his face. Remus felt a shy grin spread across his own face. He was sure he had never seen Sirius Black blush before. “Do you need some help?” He enquired, eyes glittering. Sirius’ back straightened, “Oh! Yeah, would you?” Sirius enthused, passing the bottle of black liquid to the taller boy. Remus crouched down carefully, taking the bottle in his hands.

He took Sirius’ hand and held it steady on his lap. He felt an almighty red tinge attach itself to his face. Blushing. Shit. He neatly coated each of Sirius’ nails in the black varnish, keeping his gaze heavily on his task - hoping his blush couldn’t be seen. Once each was done, he held the dark-haired boys’ hands still. He looked up at Sirius to see a similar red tinge on his face as was on Remus’ own. “Where did you get your secret nail painting skills from?” Sirius asked, and Remus realised they were so close he could feel the other boys breath on his face. He felt his lips turn up at the corners, a shy smile forming. Sirius grinned back, and the two stared into each other's eyes for far longer than was necessary. Sirius’ hands were warm in Remus’. “Thanks.” Sirius breathed, barely above a whisper.
