Flashback to Thursday night

‘I’m telling you Marls, there’s something up with him’ were the first words Marlene hears as y/n stumbles in through her door from the rain, hair and clothes now soaked with water.

‘I’m not disagreeing with you darlin’, but care to explain what you’re talkin’ about?’ She calls out as she rushes to get a towel from the bathroom while still talking to her friend.

‘Sorry’ y/n sighed, ‘for getting water on the floor’ which Marlene brushes off with a ‘its fine! Don’t worry about it!’

‘I just… I dunno, there’s been something off for a while I think, one day he seems upset, with me, with the world, just at everything and he shuts off for a bit, keeps to himself.’ Y/n explained

Nodding with her friends words, Marlene walked back into the hallway and handed her friend a towel to briefly dry herself off with.

She continued ‘But then, like today, he was quiet this morning but by the afternoon he was all lovey-dovey again, he was even offering to cook dinner and everything-‘

‘What?!’ Marlene laughed, ‘that man cannot cook if his life was on the line, remember a few years ago, all of us came up to yours for dinner and he cooked the chicke-‘

Y/n cut her off ‘The chicken, yes, couldn’t even cut through that thing’ They both chuckled at the memory

‘But seriously, he can’t cook, like at all. What was he saying before that?’ Asked Marlene as they began to walk down the hall after Y/N dried herself off quickly with the towel.

‘Uh, well he was fixing his car and I was just in the garden, I don’t fully remember what we were talking about to be honest, it was only quick. He just wanted to ask what time I’d be home, if I was staying for dinner, he seemed to be in a good mood’ y/n smiled as she sat down on the couch.

‘Oh, okay then’ replied Marlene, lips pulled into a grimace as she plopped down onto the couch next to her friend, ‘well, I’m not too sure what you’re worried about babes, Sirius has always gotten on my nerves so I’m a bit biased, maybe he’s just been tired?’

‘yeah, maybe’ replied y/n begrudgingly, ‘y’don’t think maybe … I've done something, to upset him’

‘Wha- of course not! Don’t worry that pretty little head of yours’ said Marlene as she scooted closer to place a peck on her forehead, ‘you are the kindest soul I know, you wouldn’t hurt a fly’

‘I did do that once though-’

‘You didn’t mean to hit that fly down! You were meant to give me a high five and it got in the way’ They both laughed as they recalled the memory from their 6th year at school

‘I just want it to get back to normal y’know, like how it was at school.’ y/n sighed

‘i know’ Marlene frowned, ‘being an adult sucks’ they both huffed out a laugh.

‘yet again … before you and him got together he was known to be quite the player, that was why it toom you so long to get together in the first place. So, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows back for you guys then either’

‘Well that’s completely different now.’ y/n replied, ‘right? y’don’t think he’s seeing anyone now do you?!’ she continued, much more panicked then before, and looked to Marlene for reassurance.

‘Of course not! I’m not saying that, i just mean … like, no matter if we’re in school or not, no relationship is going to be perfect. That’s just how it is, doesn’t mean you both won’t get back to that happy place again though’ Marlene brushed her hand through y/n’s hair and began to untangle the knots that the rain brought to it.

‘Your right’ y/n relaxed in her friends hold

‘Always am’ Marlene laughed

After spending a few hours at Marlene’s house watching movies, catching up and eating some dinner, y/n decided it was time to head home.

‘Okay, well I’m tired, I’d better be going back now’ She yawned out her words as she stretched her arms behind her head.

Both of them got up from the couch, ‘Are you sure I can’t drive you back, it’s really no problem, you only live like 15 minutes away from here?’

‘No Marly, really I appreciate the offer but it’s already dark, don’t want you driving out in the rain for no reason, I’ll call the taxi now and it should be here within 5 minutes or so’ she smiled before hugging her friend

‘If you insist, just be safe okay? And make sure to message me once you get home!’ Marlene reminded her as they broke from their hug

‘I will, I promise’

Present time

It had been almost a whole week since last Thursday now, y/n was still missing. The searches were still ongoing, but after 6 days, there wasn’t looking to be much hope in where they were looking.

Marlene knew for sure something was wrong, apart from the main factor that her best friend was missing, she knew for a fact that y/n got home safe, so that left a very brief time bracket in which something had gone wrong.

Unless a random murderer took her phone and spent the time scrolling through her contacts to find Marlene’s name and send her a message themselves, then yes, it was safe to say Marlene was sure y/n got home safely.

It had something to do with Sirius, she thought. it has to.

I should have payed more attention, she was telling me he was acting strange, and I just brushed it off. Her mind was tormenting her with ‘what if’ situations.

If I had just listened more, if I drove her home, if she had just stayed the night with me…

But she was going to get to the bottom of it, whether y/n was missing in plain sight, if she’d been taken, or if merlin forbid she was killed, (though the prospect of that hurt Marlene more than she thought possible). She would avenge her friend, and she wouldn’t go down without a fight.
