Lily walked into the Flitwick Library with her favorite tote bag, a big canvas one with sketches of flowers all over the front and back. She hadn’t brought earbuds, planning to talk to Remus instead of listening to music. She checked her phone for a text from Remus, and sure enough, there was one, telling her that he was in the small cafe. She hurried over.
“Remus, hi!” She called, spotting her friend and reaching out to hug him. If she stood on her tiptoes and he leaned down, she could reach around his neck.
“Hi! God, I haven’t seen you in ages!” He said, holding her at arm’s length like an over-affectionate aunty. “Well, besides class, but we never talk then.”
“I know! I’ve been dying to talk to you,” said Lily. “Shall we order?”
“We shall,” said Remus, leading her to the order counter. A few minutes later, when she had her maple oat milk latte in hand, Lily began to navigate her way through the stacks.
“Oh! I just remembered! Are you auditioning for Beauty and the Beast?” She asked, carefully avoiding a freshman who looked like she was about to break down. Truthfully, she wanted to sit down next to the girl and tell her it was going to be okay, but she knew all too well that it was often better to work through it yourself.
“Oh, I was going to ask you the same thing! Yeah, I am.” Remus smiled as they walked over to the Pince Reading Room. It had been their go-to spot in Freshman year.
“Oh, great! Mary, Marlene, and Dorcas are, too. You’ve met Dorcas, right? We hit it off last spring and all four of us are rooming together this year…” Lily trailed off, a red-and-gold blur and a loud thump distracting. She turned to look and saw James Potter picking up a stack of books from the floor, a girl she didn’t recognize standing over him with an outstretched hand.
“Oh my god,” Remus groaned. “Who else would try to do something chivalrous and end up dropping someone’s books on the ground?” Lily was about to scoff and agree, but she looked over at Remus and stopped. He was smiling- she knew Remus and James had been best friends since Primary School. Although she thought James Potter was an arrogant toe-rag most of the time, she said nothing for Remus’ sake.
“Hm,” Lily said instead, a very neutral noise. James looked over at that moment, having handed the books back to the girl. He shoved his hair off of his forehead and waved at Remus excitedly. Remus, being a grade-A introvert, simply raised his hand. James seemed to notice Lily was with him, and then promptly turned pink and turned away.
“Strange kid,” said Lily, beginning to walk again. “Anyway, were you going to say something about Beauty and the Beast?”
“Oh, yeah,” said Remus. “I’m auditioning with James, Sirius, and Peter. Oh, and Regulus, do you know them?”
“You’re joking,” said Lily, looking at Remus.
“What? What’s wrong with Regulus?” He asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
“Oh, no, nothing’s wrong with Regulus,” she said. “I meant, James is auditioning?”
“Yeah! It was his idea, actually. To get us all to try out. He was a huge theater kid in high school,” said Remus as they found seats in the Reading Room.
“God, he’s going to try and control everything, isn’t he? Of course, he’s the one to ruin this last chance at theater for me!” Lily groaned. She knew she was being dramatic. She barely knew anything about James Potter, except that he played on the Hogwarts football team, obliviously flirted with everyone, and was, in the most basic way, annoying. They had had a psychology class together in Freshman year, and ever since then, he’d tried to talk to Lily at any possible time. He smiled too big and called her “Evans” instead of Lily. She didn’t understand how Remus put up with him, but valuing her friendship with him, never questioned it.
“Oh, come off it, Lily,” said Remus, opening Little Women. “He’s a good guy. I don’t know what your problem is.”
“Nevermind. Let’s work on the essay,” said Lily, leaning back in her chair.
