Dancing

Saturday, January 4th, 1992

Alex had always liked dancing. She had never really done dance lessons or anything, she wasn't even that good, but it was enjoyable. To just forget everything, make yourself into a song. Letting it drive your movements and thoughts. No choreography, just following the beat. It felt like you weren't even human anymore, but in a good way.

Alex liked anything that made her different from herself.

Dancing, art, making music, singing, reading. It all made her a new person in a new plane of existence.

It's not that Alex didn't like herself, or that she didn't like this world. She did! But....But, sometimes life could be overwhelming and she could be insecure....It was just nice to experience life from a different point of view than usual.

Alex closed her eyes, trusting muscle memory to not let her fall into her furniture. It didn't always work, and she was a bit clumsy, but the weightless feeling of dancing to music without having the visuals of the world around you ruining the effect were worth it.

Sometimes her mind tried to wonder. Tried to bring up memories or current events or future events. Sometimes she thought of dancing she had done in the past or how she would dance at her wedding if she ever had one....Sometimes she thought of the slurs that had been thrown at her or the startling lack of progress in the world. Alex tried to suppress all of these thoughts, but her mind was insistent.

Alex didn't like thinking a lot of the time. It could be troublesome and distracting. But, sometimes she needed the distraction.

Alex didn't dance in any particular style. It was sorta ballet, but not quite a lot of the time. But, sometimes she was more into a hip hop or lyrical style. And, well, those were the only ways she really knew how to dance.

She could do dances like waltz and square dancing, mind you. But, those were easy, and they weren't genres. They were just dances unto themselves.

Besides, Alex wasn't really a slow dance or whatever square dancing was kind of person. And certainly not when she was alone in her room, dancing solos. What song would she even dance those dances to? Certainly none that she listened to. So, it was mostly irrelevant.

Alex didn't think that people danced enough. She used to spin down the hallways when she was coming back from the bathroom or something at school. She would feel way too foolish to do that now, but she wished that she could.

Alex stumbled and fell onto her knees, but she didn't stop dancing. Instead she turned the fall into a bridge, then slowly stood back up from bridge position as the music swelled. As the singers voice got higher and more mocking, Alex span slowly and did a small grand jete.

Up and down, up and down, up and down.

When she was younger Alex thought that she would be a professional dancer when she was an adult. Now that she was older, Alex realized that she didn't have the skills for that. Besides she was way worse at dancing when other people were around.

Now....Now Alex didn't know what she would be. She didn't even know if she would chose to work in the magical or non-magical world.

Of course, she had the money her parents left her. But, she still wanted a job. Otherwise what would she ever do with herself?

Alex accidentally kicked her desk, but she still didn't stop dancing. Yes, it hurt. But, oh well. Professional dancers danced through way worse. Alex could survive this.

Another couple of spins, an arabesque, and Alex, purposefully, fell to one knee. Finally, the song was over.

This had been the fifteenth or so song Alex had danced to today. She had been at this for an hour. So, she decided that she was finally allowed to have a break.

This decision having been made, Alex walked over and flopped down on her bed. She would love a nap, but it was too late in the day, besides the first United meeting post-Christmas break was in a few hours. So, Alex would have to contend with just laying there for a while.

Well, it was better than nothing.
