Chapter 10
The group of four looked around at the street of simple identical houses as they waited for the Dursleys to answer; every part of the street screamed ‘boring’, the yards of said houses ranged from ‘neatly and tidy’ to ‘neat but overcompensating’. The Dursley’s garden was quite nice and done up and even the snow covered the garden had been tidied.
As they were impatiently waiting they could hear someone clumsily running down the steps and not a minute had passed when the door swung open so fast and forcibly it almost hit Sirius on the nose, thankfully Remus had quick reflexes. The person - Hari - hadn’t waited to greet them, merely motioning with his hand to follow him and once again racing back up the stairs. The adults were quick to follow the frantic boy, Remus grimaced as he smelt blood.
Hari had taken the adults to where Daisy currently laid, Hari stood next to his sister, and looked at them helplessly
“I-I can’t help her…” Hari croaked, looking somehow so much older than he was yet painfully young at the same time.
“James I need you to make sure that she stays still, what I need to do will most likely hurt her a lot, if it doesn’t something is really wrong, Sirius-“ Sirius cut off Remus
“I got Hari,” Sirius then turned to the boy and using his hand gently guided the boy to the doorway. “Hey kiddo,” Sirius opened his arms, allowing Harry to hug him if he wanted.
Hari’s arms were defencivly covering his chest, his helpless look had turned to a cold glare. “If you think I’m fucking leaving her clearly your brains were fucked by the curse” He spat cruelly and so different from every other time Sirius or Remus had seen him.
Sirius raised his hands, he had never been planning on taking the boy out of eyeshot from his sister, but he was standing right next to her where they needed to be to help her. If it had been Sirius and this had been Regulus he would be the same as Hari. “We don’t want you to leave her but right now you’re in the way of her healing, why don’t we just stay by the door, no silencing charms and you’ll be able to see everything still, okay?”
After a few seconds of apprehension, Hari allowed Sirius to guide him by the door, it must’ve been the first time Hari had really looked around as he frowned as he saw Lily leaning against Miss and the cat help her down the ground. His eyes darted from the large cat to his sister, questions clear in his eyes but he remained silent.
“That’s Miss, she’s a service animal for Lily”
“Ohmygod she’s not actually” Hari’s voice dropped as his eyes darted from Lily to Sirius. “Brain damaged?”
Hari’s comment made Sirius grin, just for a second before it was gone; he would’ve laughed had the situation been different. “Kind of,”
This seemed to be the wrong thing to say; Hari felt the lump in his throat grow and his eyes burn with tears begging to be free. He tried all the tricks, pressing his tongue to the roof of his mouth and looking up and blinking rapidly but none of these worked as he quickly fell into sobs, crying words Sirius couldn’t understand. Sirius rubbed the small of the boy’s back while holding back from just eloping the boy in a hug like he used to when he was just a baby. How could he comfort his godson when feeling completely helpless himself.
As Sirius was comforting Hari, and Remus and Lily worked on Daisy, James worked to transfigure a slide board, bandages, probably a splint or brace … how could this happen? It felt like one moment he was playing with his babies and suddenly they were older and so hurt and he didn’t protect them, couldn’t protect them. After using the one flat pillow to make bandages, James searched for something to use as a slide board, when his eyes landed on a wooden bedside table that had its door halfway off, he needed something study to create the board and that was perfect. With a quick flick the screws that were barely holding the door together came undone and the door fell into the floor which James quickly grabbed and transfigured.
“Slide board done”
Remus nodded, a grim expression on his face. “I don’t want to apparate her, can you turn their fireplace into a floo?”
“On it”
