Chapter 2
He lifted his hand up and tapped on the front door, before transforming back quickly and waiting right at the foot of it. It was way past midnight and he wasn't sure if Remus was awake. But the lights came up in the living room immediately and Sirius understood that sleep was a lost hope for Remus even after all these years.
Padfoot's breath quickened as he heard the sound of footsteps from inside the house, and he just panted heavily with his tongue out. He heard the locks click and the door open slightly, and watched a brown head appear through the little gap. The said head scanned left and right, eyeing far and near, and then proceeded to shut the door quickly, having missed the object right below.
But Padfoot immediately barked once, looking up at him with his wide grey eyes.
Remus stopped, hands unmoved on the door, as he looked down and gasped loudly. He immediately opened the door wide, letting the giant black dog in.
Once they ran inside and the door was bolted shut, Remus stared open-mouthed at the dog in front of him, eyes wide with surprise and amusement.
He knew that Sirius had gotten out of Azkaban months earlier and that he was in hiding, as suggested by Dumbledore and that he had only met Harry in the meantime and no one else.
He knew Sirius was innocent and that it was Peter who destroyed their lives once for all.
He knew Sirius had reunited with his godson in the past few months. He had even rejoiced silently, imagining how beautiful it would've been like for the godson and the godfather to realize that they still had each other.
What he didn't know was that Sirius would ever appear at his doorstep, just like that.
What he didn't know was that Sirius would ever come back into his life, after everything.
He kept his wand back, inside the pocket of his robe and just looked down at him - at Padfoot actually.
Because Sirius hadn't transformed back. Yet.
Remus looked at him expectantly, signalling *well?*
Padfoot just gazed back at him sideways, eyes so innocent and beautiful, just blinking away.
"Aren't you gonna change back?"
"Woof woof"
"Why not?"
Padfoot whined softly and put his paw out, waiting for Remus.
Remus just looked at him, his eyes now teary, his expression soft. He immediately strode forward and bent down, taking the paw on his hand, and embraced the black dog in the hallway. He sobbed silently, hugging Padfoot, and within seconds, instead of the canine, he had a bony Sirius in between his arms.
Remus clutched Sirius, holding his soft black hair at the back of his head tightly within his fingers and resting his own face against Sirius' shoulder.
"I thought this would be much easier, you know? You telling me to fuck off and me, just getting the hell out of here and storming into Dumbledore's place to give him quite an earful."
"Well, you were wrong. As usual. Can't say I'm the least bit surprised." Remus sniffled.
Sirius nudged him lightly on the chest, still blissfully within the embrace.
"I'm sor-"
"Don't!"
"I have to. I need to."
"Not now, please. Right now, I just wanna stay like this."
And they did.
