Post-The Prank™ fight
Remus turned and walked in the other direction of the courtyard when he saw Sirius approaching.
“Oi, Moony!” Sirius called after him, running to catch up. “Hold on a second!”
“What,” Remus hissed as he turned on his heels towards the other boy. “Could you possibly want?”
“We’re friends,” Sirius started.”Friends talk to each other-”
“Friends,” Remus replied harshly, “Don’t pull the type of shit that you did.” He started to stalk off but was pulled back when he heard Sirius speak softly.
“I said I was sorry,” he conceded with his head down.
“Sorry? You’re sorry? I could have killed him, Sirius!” Remus yelled. “I could have been kicked out of school or even worse arrested. ‘Sorry’ doesn’t cut it.”
“I don’t know what you want me to say!” Sirius pushed back. “It was a stupid mistake.”
“No, a stupid mistake is me thinking we could ever be friends.” Remus bit back.
“Remus,” Sirius started slowly. “I—”
“You’re what? Sorry?” Remus was seething at this point. “Are you sorry Padfoot? Because from how I see it, you would do it again in a heartbeat.”
Sirius held his ground. “Maybe I would. Snivillous needed to be taught a lesson.”
“Are you even listening to yourself? Snape is not the enemy.” Remus felt like he was talking to a wall.
“Yes he is the enemy,” He shot back. “Of course he’s the enemy! Do you know the things he says about you?”
“Of course I know!” Remus shouted back. “You think I don't? Guess what, Sirius, it gets even worse when you’re not there, when James and Peter aren’t there. I can practically feel the rumours about me seeping through the walls in this place. Being friends with you doesn’t make me untouchable, it makes me a target.” The last part was barely above a whisper.
Sirius was silent for a long time, his mind was swarming with all of the things Moony had said. Finally, he spoke up. “I really am sorry, Remus. I took it too far and I know that. But don’t you think you’re blowing this out of proportion? He didn’t actually get hurt.”
“But he could have. Even though you’ve been disowned, he still respects you because of your family.”
“Keep my family out of this,” Sirius seethed. “You know it’s been hard for me.”
“It’s been hard for you?” Remus was back to yelling.” Sirius, even if you were a werewolf, you’d still have your inheritance, status, and power, not to mention being a pureblood. I’m poor, basically muggle born, have no parents, no siblings, just me in this insane world that hates me for something I have no control over. Do you have any idea what that's like? Knowing that one small mistake could cause your whole way of life to be taken from you in an instant? After Hogwarts, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to make money and show your parents they were wrong about you. I have nothing. I can’t get a steady job that will allow me to be gone for 3 days during each full moon, not to mention how I’ll manage to explain these scars.”
