Splitting Up

“What is this?” Laurent’s crimson eyes were wide as he looked between Harry and Isabella. “You brought snacks?”

Jasper snapped his teeth as Edward let out a low snarl. Jasper risked a quick glance away from the redhead female eyeing Harry with deep-rooted hatred and saw that he already had his wand out. Harry was anxious, determined, angry, afraid, but he had his jaw clenched and his knuckles were white on his wand.

Jasper sensed the rising want, greed, lust, amusement, glee, in the nomad James and knew it was a lost cause. James was all but grinning outright as he challenged Edward silently.

“They are with us, a part of our family,” Carlisle said severely. “We do not hunt humans, as you can see, and they will not be harmed.”

“Human?!” The redhead shrieked in a high pitched tone. “He- he isn’t human!”

Laurent and James, both so drawn in by Isabella’s all too tempting blood, spared curious looks at Harry. Harry who smiled sharply at Victoria.

“I’m more human than you, leech,” he sneered. “Not that it’s much of a contest.”

Laurent took a curious step towards Harry, and Jasper pulled his fearless, reckless, cheeky, partner halfway behind him and bared his teeth at the threat.

“What are you?” Laurent stopped and raised his hands in a show of innocence, though he kept his eyes locked on Harry’s defiant green ones.

“Magic,” Harry drawled sardonically. Laurent looked disbelieving, but Victoria let out a shriek of distress. James raised his brows and Jasper felt his amusement and glee triple.

“I said they are with us,” Carlisle said firmly. James and Laurent slowly straightened up and stepped back in to their original formation, though Victoria continued to watch Harry with angry, hateful, terrified, disgusted, emotions warring for dominance on her pale face.

Jasper frantically sent out [Peace. Tranquility. Disinterest.] but it made no difference now. He could read James and Victoria’s decisions in their emotions as easily as Edward could their thoughts.

“It appears we have much to learn about each other,” Laurent said diplomatically.

Jasper had never liked politicians.

“We do,” Carlisle said calmly. “Why don’t you come to our home? You can clean up and we can talk. As long as you’re agreeable to refraining from hunting within 100 miles of our home, we do need to remain inconspicuous.”

“Of course,” Laurent sent a last curious look to Isabella and Harry before nodding cordially. “We will not harm your... humans.”

Harry’s hand tightened on Isabella’s and he glanced up at Jasper quickly, Jasper tapped his back with his index finger.

Wait, he wanted to say. Wait. Don’t show them what you can do just yet. Not if we’re leaving now.

Harry didn’t disappear as Jasper knew he could, so he must have understood in some manner.

“We will show you the way,” Carlisle said. He stepped forward with Emmett, Rosalie, and Esme as Edward stepped backwards with Isabella. Jasper would rather not leave his family without him, but as Harry stepped backwards to Isabella’s side, it left him little choice. Alice took a light step backwards as well, remaining with the smaller group as the others began running.

“Can you take us Harry?” Edward asked, his voice bleak and his emotions in terrible agony. “Take us to your house?”

Harry hesitated and frowned at the four others. “I can only take one at a time,” he said quietly. “I can’t apparate with more than one person. I’m not as good as Hermione, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be,” Jasper reassured him quickly. “Take Alice first, then Isabella, then Edward, then come back for me darlin.”

“You go first Jazz,” Alice said tonelessly. “The female is going straight to Harry’s house, the male to Bella’s.”

“My house?!” Isabella cried. “But- but Charlie’s there! Harry, please, can you go get Charlie?”

“I-“ Harry hesitated and Jasper could feel his emotions spiraling as he fought to control his panic at the unfair demands being placed on his shoulders.

“Harry is one person,” Jasper said, his eyes hard as he looked at his brother, he is doing enough, he thought fiercely. “He can’t do everything.”

“They aren’t going to hurt Charlie,” Alice said confidently. “But if Harry shows up at Charlie’s house tonight, it goes white and I can’t guarantee he doesn’t get hurt Bella.”

“You first then,” Harry looked up at Jasper with angst and fear burning in his eyes. “C’mon.”

He grabbed Jasper’s hand and Jasper was once more exposed to the squeezing, crushing, miserable feeling of apparation at Harry’s side.

“Accio cloak,” Harry called the second they landed, Harry on his feet for once. Harry snagged the cloak that came flying from his room and threw it to Jasper. “Don’t step outside and put this on,” he ordered before he disappeared again with a quick pop.

Jasper looked at the purple silk cloak in bemusement and pulled it on, if Harry told him to do so then clearly it had a purpose. He felt ridiculous standing there in Harry’s purple cloak, but he didn’t have to wait long until crack, Alice was unceremoniously deposited in Harry’s living room, and Jasper had a momentary glimpse of Harry’s black hair and a barked order of “head too Jazz,” before he disappeared again.

“Why is your body gone?” Alice asked curiously. Jasper looked down to determine what she meant and let out a joyless chuckle when he saw that Harry had given him his invisibility cloak.

“Apparently I’m meant to be invisible,” Jasper said. “Here- cover yourself Alice. Harry will be back momentarily and we can begin figuring out what to do.”

“It doesn’t look good,” Alice said quietly, she ran the silky material over her fingers as she stared sightlessly at Harry’s bookcase. Jasper didn’t have a chance to ask how it did look before Harry dropped Isabella in the center of the floor.

“She’s going to puke,” Harry said dispassionately before popping away.

“Call Carlisle, tell him it’s going to be a fight. I’ve got Bella,” Alice told him. She had a trash can from Harry’s bathroom under Isabella’s face right as the trembling and pale girl began vomiting. Jasper curled his nose at the smell, though it was a welcome reprieve from Isabella’s blood. He dialed Carlisle, and was relieved when he answered the phone immediately.

“It’s going to be a fight,” Jasper said quickly. “We don’t know who, or how, but Alice says it’ll be a fight.”

“We’ll meet you once we attempt to part peacefully with our single guest. I assume you’re at a cold location?” Carlisle referenced the scent of Harry’s blood in a needless effort to mask their location. If the female was outside, they knew where they were.

“We are. See you soon.” Jasper snapped his phone shut as Harry and Edward landed in the living room.

“Bella, I’m so sorry,” Edward went straight to Isabella’s side and began smoothing the sweaty strands of her hair off her face. “Are you alright?”

Jasper kept his eyes and senses trained on Harry. Harry was shaking, his jaw clenched, and his eyes glowing with fear, protection, panic, and exhaustion.

“Sit.” Jasper was by his side instantly, gently guiding him to his favored chair. “Sit until Carlisle gets here. We’ll plan then.”

“What are we planning?” Isabella asked. Her face was still covered in a sheen of sweat, but she had quit vomiting. Harry waved his wand wearily from his seat and the disgusting human bile disappeared.

“James goes on the hunt tonight,” Edward said. “He- he wants you Bella. I’m so sorry. I should never have exposed you like that.”

“It wasn’t like you had a choice,” Alice said. “If you had ran immediately, he would have caught her scent anyway.”

“What’s the plan then?” Harry asked. “Hide the human, kill the leech?”

Jasper ran to the kitchen quickly to grab Harry one of his nasty silver canned drinks, and politely grabbed Isabella one as well. He returned and gave them each the drink, Harry raised his in a mock toast before opening it and drinking it quickly.

“Wait- is she outside?” Harry asked after he drained his drink. He shifted in his seat and strained upwards to try and see out the bay windows in his living room.

“She is,” Alice said. “She’s watching Harry very carefully.” Jasper let out a low snarl, he hoped she heard. He hoped that the red-headed female knew that Jasper was going to personally rip her head from her body for even looking at Harry.

“Well she doesn’t need to hear us,” Harry muttered. “Muffliato.”

When nothing happened, the others looked at Harry curiously.

“Muffling charm,” he explained with a shrug. “Nobody can hear us now. So what’s the plan here?”

“Carlisle isn’t going to like it, but we’re going to have to kill them,” Edward stroked Isabella’s face absently as he spoke. “I can still hear her, she’s confused why she can’t hear us anymore, but she knows what you are Harry. She’s going to kill you.”

Harry laughed at that, his emotions bitter and angry. “She can give it a go,” he said.

“She absolutely cannot,” Jasper grit out. “Why? Why Harry? Isabella is the one with the damn vampire magnetic blood.” Edward scowled at his brother, but Jasper ignored it. He’d feed one hundred humans to the female if she would leave Harry alone. Harry hadn’t said he couldn’t be killed, just that he wouldn’t die. It was an important distinction that Jasper desperately needed an answer to as soon as the others were gone.

Edward found that errant thought though and stared at Harry now, his brows furrowed in thought.

“Her creator was killed by a wizard, but she knows who you are,” Edward told Harry slowly. “Do you know who killed her creator?”

“No, it could have been anyone,” Harry shrugged. “She must have spent time in England recently if she knows who I am though.”

Isabella looked curious at that, but neither Jasper, Edward, nor Harry elucidated on it.

“What are they planning Edward?” Jasper asked. He was building tactics now, preparing for a battle.

“She wants to attack Harry first, she sees him as the biggest threat. I can’t read him, he isn’t outside, but he’s a tracker Jasper. A good tracker. And he wants Bella.”

Jasper swallowed down a groan. Of course the male was a tracker. Of course. That made it more difficult, but not impossible, the only problem was... his eyes lingered on the warm smelling human girl cuddled in his brothers side. She would be injured if they attacked straight on.

“We’ve presented him with a challenge,” Edward said. “A challenge that only got more interesting when Harry called himself magical. This is his greatest hunt yet. To break through a clan of seven vampires to attack one human girl and help the female get Harry? This is a challenge he’s wanted his whole life.”

“So I go outside and kill her,” Harry said nonchalantly. “I’m not sure where I’m seeing what advantage this guy thinks he has.”

“The advantage he has is he will run, make us chase him, and he will never stop hunting her,” Edward said harshly. “If you chase after her now, she will run and continue to come back. You will never have a moment of peace.”

“Revolutionary concept,” Harry muttered quietly, but he lapsed in to thoughtful silence.

“Isabella will need to flee,” Jasper mused aloud. “We will need to make it look as if she left, then we hunt them. He might be a tracker, but there are seven-“

“Eight,” Harry said.

“Eight,” Jasper corrected himself, “there are eight of us.”

“We can’t all go,” Edward said. “Someone has to stay with Bella. Probably at least two people.”

It went without saying that Edward thought he would be one of those people.

The hunting party has a better chance with you, than without, Jasper thought reasonably. Allow someone else to protect her, and eliminate the threat to her life yourself.

That’s what Jasper planned on doing. He saw Edward’s subtle frown as he acknowledged the truth in Jasper’s thoughts.

“Carlisle and the others are here,” Alice said. “Harry can they come in?”

“Bit past traditional manners, aren’t we?” Harry grinned.

“It’s never a bad time for manners,” Esme said, appearing quickly in the living room.

“What’s going on?” Carlisle asked, silently appearing just as quickly. “Emmett and Rosalie are patrolling outside. The female was there but she ran when she saw Emmett.”

Edward quickly began filling them in on what they knew. Jasper stared down at the top of Harry’s head and wondered if he could be convinced to sit out the actual fighting, and instead go on human protective detail.

After everything he knew about Harry Potter, he didn’t think he would. But he would try anyway.

“We need to send Bella away,” Edward said to Carlisle. “Hide her-“

“I can’t just leave!” Isabella cried. “I’ve got Charlie, and school. I can’t just go.”

“You don’t understand!” Edward told her. “He will kill you Bella! The best we can do is get you as far away as possible!”

Isabella swung her eyes to Harry, but he nodded shortly, entirely on board with that plan.

“What about my Dad?” she asked quietly. “I can’t just leave him. How long will I be gone?”

“As long as it takes,” Edward said. “Harry and Alice, will you go with her?”

Thank you, Jasper thought gratefully. He assumed Edward was too caught up with his partner to worry about Jasper’s, but it seemed he had unfairly judged his brother too quickly.

“Orrr, Jazz goes with Bella and I go with the hunting party,” Harry said slowly. “Doesn’t make much sense to keep me out of it. And Jazz is strong, Alice can foresee any attacks and Jazz can stop them. Right?”

“No, I’ll go with you,” Jasper said immediately. If he couldn’t prevent Harry from fighting, he wouldn’t leave him alone.

“Jazz.” Harry looked up at him and his bright green eyes were glowing with confidence and power. “I am very, very, hard to kill. Much harder than you are. I swear. But you’re a good fighter, you can’t just leave Bella and Alice alone.”

“They can have Carlisle,” Jasper said with a random selection. “Send Carlisle, Alice, Rosalie, and Bella away. The rest of us will track James and Victoria.”

“If we all disappear then Charlie will get the FBI involved,” Alice said quietly. Her eyes were screwed up and her lips puckered as she searched through a foggy future. “Some of us need to stay if Bella is leaving. I think if Carlisle is here Charlie will accept his story, but it’s hard to see when Jasper won’t decide to leave.”

“Me, Edward, Carlisle, Rosalie, Emmett, and Esme stay. Bella leaves with Alice and Jasper tonight. Then tomorrow night we start tracking them.” Harry spoke quickly and confidently, much like the leader that Jasper knows he is. “If Bella disappears after going on a date with Edward, Charlie’s going to panic and blame him. Edward needs to be visible tomorrow so he see’s him, then we can finish this quick.”

“Where am I going?” Isabella asked quietly, accepting her role in the upcoming fight just as Jasper begrudgingly accepted his.

“You can go to my place,” Harry said easily. “It’s in London, and has more protections than anything else. You, Alice, and Jasper can stay there. Kreacher will feed you.”

Nothing in the book Jasper had gotten halfway through gave him any idea what a Kreacher was.

“Just, er, go outside to use your phone, otherwise it’ll blow up and I’m not exaggerating,” Harry grinned.

Edward gave Harry a look of such gratitude that Jasper doubted Edward ever imagined he could repay him.

“But... but what do I tell Charlie?” Isabella asked quietly. “I can’t just disappear, he’ll be so scared.”

Everyone thought for a moment before Edward answered.

“Tell him you hate Forks, tell him you’re going back to your mothers house,” he said gently. “But whatever you need to tell him- do it quickly. In and out Bella. Sixty seconds, okay?”

Isabella had tears welling up in her eyes, tears which must have made Harry feel badly for her.

“Hey.” Harry scooted down to the floor and grabbed her arm. “I’m going to protect the hell out of Charlie’s house, okay? I’m going straight over there tonight to cast every single protective spell I can on his house. By the time I’m done, nobody is getting in there. And I’m skipping school tomorrow-“

Jasper sensed a bit of smug glee as Harry found a perfectly plausible reason to miss school.

“-and I’m keeping an eye on him until we leave. I won’t let him get within ten feet of these damn leeches. And when you get back, Charlie will be so happy, won’t he? He’ll just-“ Harry’s voice faltered momentarily as his emotions surged with sorrow, grief, longing, “-he’ll be so happy his daughter is back. Okay?”

“Okay,” Isabella sniffled and nodded. “I’m ready.”

“Here,” Harry snagged his cloak off the floor beside Alice and handed it to Edward. “This is the only bloody thing in the world I own that belonged to my dad, and he’s dead. Cover her with it, and bring it back in one piece. If it gets torn in anyway, I’m ripping your leg off, got it?”

Edward choked at Harry’s very guilt trip filled threat, but he nodded. Isabella eyed the cloak curiously and Harry took the opportunity to smirk and throw it over her. Carlisle and Esme both let out quiet gasps as Isabella disappeared beneath it.

“Incredible,” Carlisle breathed. Isabella must have looked down at herself because she cried out in shock.

“I’m invisible!”

“It’s a priceless fucking heirloom,” Harry repeated severely. “The only way I’m accepting a single snag in this fabric is if there’s a fight. Got it?”

“I will not allow your cloak to be harmed in any way,” Edward said solemnly. “Thank you Harry. I- I can never repay you.”

“I know,” Harry grinned. “Hurry up.”

Edward must have tucked Isabella beneath his arm, because he ran out quickly with his arm seemingly bent at an odd angle. Jasper murmured for Emmett to tail him and then stepped out to call for Rosalie.

“Alice and I are taking Isabella to hide, Harry plans on being in the hunting party. The female has decided to kill him herself. Will you stay with Esme and play our parts or will you go with Harry?”

“Carlisle can stay with Esme, I’ll go with Harry, so will Emmett,” Rosalie said protection and love pouring off her just as Jasper had anticipated. “Nobody is touching him, Jasper. Over my actually dead body.”

Jasper shared a look of utter understanding with his sister before he returned to the living room.

“Carlisle and Esme will remain in Forks, they will make our excuses once everyone leaves tomorrow night,” Jasper said. “Rosalie, Edward, Emmett, and Harry will track down the nomads.” Jasper couldn’t help his look of despair at Harry at those words.

“And you and Alice will take Bella to Grimmauld Place,” Harry said. He held his eyes steadily until Jasper nodded curtly.

“It’s a good plan son,” Carlisle placed a consoling hand on Jasper’s shoulder. Jasper only watched Harry, a fierce desire to protect raging through his veins.

“Come help me grab some stuff Jazz,” Harry said abruptly. “I should probably fill you in on Grimmauld Place too.”

Jasper dutifully followed Harry, unwilling to depart from him until absolutely necessary. The two of them entered Harry’s bedroom, where Harry immediately closed the door and muttered the muffling charm once more. He turned to Jasper and Jasper, with his never ending anticipation for attacks of any kind, was caught off guard as Harry surged forward and pressed a hard kiss to his lips.

“You will be careful,” Harry demanded against his mouth, his hand twisted in Jasper’s shirt. “Swear it Jasper Whitlock. Swear it.”

“You swear it,” Jasper growled. “Swear that you will not take on a solo fight while being a part of a team. Promise me you’ll stay with my siblings.”

Harry kissed him again, and Jasper eagerly returned the kiss, deepening it while leaning against Harry’s door. Harry seemed to pour all his anxiety, panic, fear, anger, in to his kiss. Jasper fed him back love, adoration, protection, affection. Harry eventually sighed and pulled back.

“If anything happens-“

“Don’t say that,” Jasper said quickly. “Or I swear to your Merlin that I’ll let Isabella die and stay with you.”

“Don’t be like that,” Harry said softly. “Jazz, I don’t think I can die. I haven’t tested it much, but I should have died three times in my life now, I’m pretty sure you can rip my head off my body and I’ll just wake up with an ugly scar. But...” Harry swallowed harshly and looked up at the ceiling. “If anything happens, tell-tell Andy I’m sorry, okay?”

“No,” Jasper snarled. “No, Harry. You will stay alive and we will go get your mischievous little godson ourselves for spring break. We will take him to the park, we will buy him so many toys he’ll be spoiled for life, and you will be careful and come home to me.”

“I’ll be careful if you will,” Harry said. “Swear it.”

“I swear it,” Jasper said. “Swear you’ll not risk your safety for someone else’s.”

“I swear,” Harry said.

They both knew Harry was lying.

And it made Jasper’s panic surge.

“Don’t let Bella mess with anything in Grimmauld, and here,” Harry handed Jasper a photo off his nightstand. “Kreacher might freak out with you guys showing up. Show him this and he’ll be right as rain.”

Jasper glanced down and could have cried at the photo. It was taken just yesterday, Harry and Jasper laughing on a loop as Teddy’s little tongue tried to lick ice cream off his nose.

“I don’t like this,” Jasper said. “Please, trade me Harry.”

“Jazz.” Harry smiled softly and his eyes were filled with a pitying kind of fondness. “You know I can’t.”

Jasper did know that. It was one of the things that he loved best about his brave, fearless, righteous solider.

But in this moment? He hated it. He wished Harry was a coward.

When Edward, Isabella, and Emmett returned, Isabella’s face was red and blotchy and Edward looked to be in pain. Edward handed Harry back his fathers cloak with all the gravity of a man handing over his newborn.

“You’re joining the fight?” Emmett extended a fist to Harry, “Hell yes little bro. This is going to be cake.”

Jasper was not the only one who hissed at that.

Isabella wrapped her arms around a suddenly stiff Harry. “Don’t let him get hurt,” she sniffled. “I need a chance to apologize.”

“Nobody is touching a hair on Charlie’s head,” Harry swore quietly. Isabella pulled back and gave Harry a watery smile. Jasper sent a wave of peace to her, the only act of kindness he could think of in the moment.

Harry pointed his wand at his fireplace and lit it with a quiet, “Incendio.” He grabbed a small blue pot off the mantle and offered it to Isabella first.

“Listen very carefully,” Harry told the three preparing to leave. “Throw this powder in the fire, very clearly say ‘Number 12 Grimmauld Place, London. Password Hedwig.’ Jazz, you should take Bella since she’s never done it before.”

Jasper felt a momentary flare of panic at being alone with Isabella Swan and her overly loud and sweet smelling blood, but Harry held his gaze steadily and Jasper would not let him down.

“Of course,” he said calmly. “Isabella, if you’d follow me.”

Isabella threw her arms around Edward and the two of them exchanged whispered goodbyes that the others politely ignored. Well, Rosalie rolled her eyes and scowled, but nobody commented on it regardless. Jasper would not exchange another goodbye with Harry, they said what they needed to say and now they both had jobs to do. The quicker it was over, the quicker they could be home.

Harry explained the concept of floo’ing to Isabella and his eyes followed Jasper and Isabella to the fire. Jasper shared one last hard look with his brother and forced him to acknowledge his thoughts.

Protect him or I’ll kill her myself.

Edward nodded curtly, and Jasper cried, “Number 12 Grimmauld Place! Hedwig!”
