They make Hermione teach them how to make the Wolfsbane, throwing themselves into memorizing the recipe in a way they never did for Potions class. Lavender and Parvati go through the motions until Lavender’s dark hair is damp with sweat and Parvati’s hands ache viciously. There’s always a bottle in their cupboard, always ingredients at hand if they need to make more. 

It’s about being ready, yes, but it’s also about autonomy. Hermione may be their friend, but they don’t want her to have the power over Lavender that Snape did Lupin. That’s something they only trust each other with.
