The nightberries look impossibly small in Rue’s hand, almost blending into her dark skin. She and Prim regard them carefully. 

“Katniss is gonna be so mad,” Primrose whispers. Her eyes are wide, half-hysterical. Rue feels the same way. 

She thinks about her own family, wonders if anybody’s crying yet. Momma won’t. Momma never does. 

“Kiss me?” Prim asks, and Rue does, because why not? Prim’s lips are warm and wet, her eyes bright. There are worse things to look at when you die, Rue thinks. 

She breaks away and whispers, “Three.” 

“Two,” Prim says. 

“One.” 

And then the klaxon blares.
