“What are we?” Maria asks one night. They’re on the porch, the sky stretching overhead like a hungry maw.
Carol sighs. The light from the house reflects off her armor, casting strange shadows on her face. “Maria–”
“Am I your little Earthling wife? Your mistress? A pit stop?” Maria knows she’s not being fair, that it will never be safe for Carol to stay with them. But God, it hurts, watching Carol leave again and again.
Carol scrubs her hands over her face. “Can we not talk about this now?”
“If not now, when?”
There’s no answering that, of course.
