Chapter 1
November 2000
Draco throws the stack of papers he has in his hands into the fire. “Tonight is the night I’m finally going to tell him, I don’t know how many more contracts he’s going to send me before he gets the point”
”He obviously hasn’t gotten the point love, he just keeps sending them. I didn’t even know there were that many pure blood women left our age.”
”That’s the thing, this last one doesn’t even graduate Hogwarts till next year.”
“Draco are you sure you want to tell him about us though, you know how angry he is going to be at you. He’s not going to like this at all.”
”I know darling, but just think, once my father knows then we can finally stop hiding in the shadows. I can announce to the whole world that I Draco Malfoy love the one and only Hermione Granger.”
Hermione giggles at that and pulls him in for a searing kiss. “Fine, only because I can’t wait to tell everyone, we’ve only been hiding our relationship for the past two years.”
”I know love and after tonight it will all be over, no more hiding, no more sneaking around, no more pretending we’re not leaving or coming back to your flat when we go out with our friends.”
Hermione and Draco have been together since their 8th year back at Hogwarts. Draco had apologized to Hermione for everything he had ever done to her and she forgave him, and it blossomed from there. They began studying together as acquaintances, to hanging out as friends, and finally one cold night she finally got the courage to kiss him just the week before Christmas break. They’ve been inseparable since, but in secret. Knowing their relationship would cause an uproar in the wizarding world, they chose to love each other in the shadows.
Finally after almost 2 years together they decided that they didn’t want to hide anymore. They devised a plan. Draco would tell his parents over dinner and Hermione would bring Draco with her to Harry and Ginny’s place for their monthly dinner the next night. They were more than ready to tell everyone as Draco was trying to find the perfect time to propose to Hermione. He had the perfect ring made up for her and perfect plan, he just wanted to be able to call her his fiancé in more than just the private of their flats.
“Alright love, I’m leaving now to go to the manor and I’ll be back tonight to tell you everything.” He pulled her in for a quick kiss before he grabbed a handful of floo powder and yelled out “Malfoy Manor”
”Draco darling you’re early, to what do we owe the please?” His mother was sitting in the library reading one of their family’s many many books.
”I wanted to talk to father before dinner started, do you know where he is?”
”In his study like usual, is something wrong my dragon?”
”No mother, I just wanted to talk to him about the contracts he keeps sending me”
”Ah, you must have finally picked someone, oh I can’t wait to hear all about it, just promise me it wont be that daft girl Astoria. You know how much a can’t stand her.”
”I promise you mother, the witch I have in mind is definitely not Astoria” Draco chuckled to himself.
”Oh well that is good news in deed, and this girl do you love her?”
”Yes mother very much. She is my inspiration, the reason I want to better myself, the light in my life and I would not have it any other way. Her smile could light up an entire room and her laugh is contagious. She’s my best friend and I hope you will love her even a decimal as much as I do”
His mother stood up and walked to him, took his hands in hers and smiled up at him. “My dragon, I wish you the absolute best, I have never seen you so happy and if what you say is true she seems to be a brilliant witch, one worthy of your love.”
”Brilliant doesn’t even begin to describe her mother, but it is a good start.”
”Well do go tell your father the good news, I know he’s tired of sending you contracts as much as you’re tired of receiving them.”
”Yes mother.” And with that Draco exited the library and walked to the other side of the manor where his fathers study was. He knocked on the door twice and stepped in.
”Draco my boy you’re early. You must be here about the latest contract. I know she may be a bit young but she is beautiful and will make an amazing Lady Malfoy”
Draco usually wasn’t a nervous person, he was always so sure of himself and confident in all decisions, but standing here, ready to spill his heart to his father, Draco had never been more nervous in his life.
”Father there is actually something I need to tell you. It’s about the contracts actually. They can stop now because I have found a witch.”
Lucius got up from behind his desk and accio’d two glasses and his best firewhiskey. “Well son do tell me what witch has caught your eye finally, I was beginning to worry I would just have to sign one of these contracts for you.” Draco could hear the seriousness in his voice even though he tried to play it off as a joke.
”You may want to sit down father, this may be a bit of a shock to you.” Draco swallowed hard as he was getting ready to spill his secrets to his father.
”I’ve actually been seeing a witch for two years now, I love her and want to ask her to marry me. We wanted to finally tell the people who were most important to us first before we told everyone else.”
”So this witch, has she told her important people yet or are you first to tell your little secret love affair.”
Draco gulped before he could continue “we are telling her closest friends tomorrow over dinner, she thought it would be best for me to come alone tonight”
”Draco please do tell your father, I am becoming impatient.”
”HermioneGranger” Draco blurted out. Lucius looks like he saw a ghost, his face became pale and his knuckles turned white around his glass.
”Son I’m going to ask you to repeat that one more time, because it sounded to me like you are sullying the family name with a mudblood” you could see the anger in his eyes as his voice was getting louder/
Draco stood his ground and as firmly as he could “I said father, I am in love with Hermione Granger.”
”Now that is a problem isn’t it. And what you’re telling me Draco, is that you are ready to give up the pure blood lifestyle, the money and the Malfoy name for that scum, because I promise you boy if you’re telling me that you’re going to marry that mudblood and give me half-blood grandchildren than that is what will happen. I will disown you from this family and you will have nothing left.”
Draco stood up throwing his cup to the ground, letting glass shatter around them. “Father you underestimate me, I don’t give a bloody damn about the money or the Malfoy name if I can’t have Hermione. She is the love of my life and I would do anything for her. You can not take that away from me.”
”Oh but you’re wrong young Draco, I can and I will. When I’m done with you, you will not love the mudblood, you wont even give her a second glance.” And before Draco could grab his want from his pocket his father had hit him with a full body binding curse and silenced him. Lucius was now standing over him as he laid on the ground unable to move or say anything.
”My boy, you just had to make it difficult. Mudbloods may be fun to dip your toes into and have a little fun but we do not marry them, we do not fall in love with them, and we certainly do not have children with them. What would your ancestors say, watching you ruin generations of pure-blood for someone so much lesser than you. No we can not have that now can we.” And with that Lucius did the one thing Draco never thought he would do again, he took his choice from him.
“Obliviate”
