Weird potion brewing
13th of March 2022
StarsAlso I wanna see more about the like....class divide(?) that's gotta be present. The Weaselys are poor, but they were still sending kids to Hogwarts for a reason. Not everyone went there, and not everyone can afford a cauldron with exact measurements. Where's that weird witch cooking out of a cast iron pan
Chaos Coordinator - she/her Cast iron rusts too so better cook that potion quick and don’t use any tomato or acidic ingredients
[people trying to convince Stars to write a fic about it]
StarsI'm putting it in poll-ideas then I'm legally free
KiritaruSeriously though.. Cauldron bottom thickness is a real problem for this very reason
Chaos Coordinator - she/herOk Percy
KiritaruThe poor have to make do with inferior cauldrons
Helios [xe/xem]honestly JKR added that bit about cauldron bottoms and it was treated as a complete joke but i want to know more
KiritaruIt shows some international trade goes on, and standards and regulations are lax because wgb had a weak and corrupt government
wizard war criminal (she/they)making my potions in a kettle on my woodstove
Helios [xe/xem]alternatively making potions in beakers and with a bunsen burner
Chaos Coordinator - she/her Where’s the witch making a potion in her ELECTRIC kettle that’s what I wanna see. “Gives it an extra zing you know”
Chaos Coordinator - she/herSAFETY GEAR
KiritaruWe know there's something in the properties of the metal that make a difference... Hence golden cauldrons etc exist
Chaos Coordinator - she/herGOGGLES
Helios [xe/xem] Hermione doesn't even put her hair up
Chaos Coordinator - she/herIsn’t a gold cauldron canon required for Felix
wizard war criminal (she/they)what if you froze mercury and made potions in that
KiritaruSounds legit
What kind of crazy ass potion could happen in a mercury cauldron
Kiritaru Potion ingredient prep is completely nonsensical... It's like how I cook... Just throw in what looks right/feels right until it's delicious. Standardized measurements could probably increase efficiency overall. Especially when making drugs that affect the brain and mind.
wizard war criminal (she/they) i wonder if you can be allergic to the ingredients and still be able to drink the potion, which would imply that the act of becoming a potion changes something fundamental about the ingredients or if you'd keel over and die of anaphylactic shock after drinking something with mint in it
KiritaruI like Magpie's take on magic feeding the potion, like a slow ritual. But... That didn't necessarily mean that the ingredients are transformed. Are they rendered out of their original forms to base components? I fucking hope so because most of what they put in is disgusting and nobody should drink that shit. But maybe it depends on the potion and process
So if you are allergic to mint... What about mint are you allergic to. Does that part change to something else...or does it become more pronounced through the brewing process

CheesymausI am not sure, there is something I am still thinking about. Is potions the exact art, where you simply follow the exact procedures and arrive at the same product? I kind of like the thought that there are standard recipes, and everyone needs to deviate from them in a slightly different way to arrive at the best possible result.
Artemisi feel like potions must be very exact, like chemistry
altho in chemistry if the moistness in the air is different or if youre on a different height your distillation might b different too
CheesymausAnd if we simply start with the boil cure of first year: the slugs surely have different sizes, the porcupine quills have different lengths….
Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoWimo, snape teaches them to just follow the recipe because encouraging the kids to make even slight deviations results in explosions
Artemisyes honestly it should be a crtain weight
Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoWdon't forget the thickness of the cauldron bottom
Artemisnot a certain amount of pieces
Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoWwell amount of pieces could be relevant since numbers have magical properties, but that would require buying stuff sorted by size
a couple of quills that are 2 cm long, a set of 2.5 cm long ones etc
Artemismayne the size between certain lengths doesnt matter to much?
Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoWthat would put it back into the cooking-corner tho
not in the exact science of chemistry
CheesymausJust to be contrary, I would bet quite a big amount of money that Snape himself was busy experimenting in school, and so did the Marauders and the the twins. So there must be a way to make experimenting survivable
Artemisno, bc with chmistry you also have a bit of wiggle room
not much, but a bit
Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW —oh he definitely was, see his old book as proof, but he was interested and competent
you can't do that with a classroom full of kids that don't really care
CheesymausThen maybe only allow that in newt years?
Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoWat best you can start that with sixth year students after they turn in an essay on their planned alterations
Theodore Z DiAngeloI think the marauders were more spell savvy than potions. The twins though
Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoWthe twins are underappreciated geniuses
Artemisyes same
i bet the twins dabbled a lot in potions
Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoWliterally the only ones in the generation to create new magic stuff
CheesymausJust off my head, the slicing snack boxes, the Peruvian instant darkness powder… all of them could be potions based

Stars Decided to wander over here to decompress from whatever the hell went on in general chat Therefore, pain train incoming Are there ways to check if someone is alive and not under certain potions or spells? Imagine you get dosed with the Draught of Living Death and woke up buried underground.
Chaos Coordinator - she/her Ok YIKEEEEES stars coming in hot
I feel like that must be a real problem
Kiritaru completely lost on wth happened in general so I'll bite
wizard war criminal (she/they) how would you wake up though? the whole point is to sleep forever
Chaos Coordinator - she/her With 1 dose or repeated doses
Kiritaru I'm going to go with yes, there's a way
Helios [xe/xem] logically there should probably be autopsy spells for the dead to check if they are actually dead, but this is the wizarding world so who knows
Stars How does it work though? I mean, if you still breathe, eventually you run out of oxygen underground. Would you just suffocate? Could your magic react and overpower it?
Chaos Coordinator - she/her Hit every body with an AK and you don’t have to worry about it
Can you tell I’m fresh out of patience this evening lol
Kiritaru Are you breathing under draught of living death?
wizard war criminal (she/they) just burn the bodies! no identification, no inconvenient resurrections
Chaos Coordinator - she/her I think fanon is that it just slows everything down dramatically so maybe like? A breath every hour?
Theodore Z DiAngelo Cant imagine why
Chaos Coordinator - she/her Or maybe the draught just affects time itself, and slows the effect of time on the body meaning the body needs wildly less of everything
Stars What do you sustain on? They don't actually explain, so are you eating your own magic? Slowly being forced into statis as you consume yourself to live and generate more magic?
wizard war criminal (she/they) ah, magical autocannibalism
Helios [xe/xem] The Draught of Living Death was an extremely powerful Sleeping Draught, sending the drinker into a deathlike slumber. Its effects are similar to suspended animation.
this is all of the info on the wiki
Chaos Coordinator - she/her Ahaaaaaaa ok so just….waiting mode
Kiritaru My thoughts are stasis... So like...sci Fi stasis?
Chaos Coordinator - she/her Lol I say “waiting mode” and kiri brings out the technical term thank you kiri “stasis” is what I was looking for
Kiritaru Lol
Stars Self preservation is a strong mechanism. Could someone's body decide that the potion feeds on the magic, and therefore assign it as an aggressor and turn themselves into a Squib to wake up?
Kiritaru That's plausible
Chaos Coordinator - she/her Stars wants everyone to be a squib
Stars I tend to view potions as a sort of catalyst. You could give the Draught to a Muggle and it would be a very strong sleeping potion, but it wouldn't sustain. If you give it to a wix, then it's a self feeding cycle
Chaos Coordinator - she/herI agree the magic interacts - but if you give to a muggle it’d be useless or poison
The magic of the Wix makes it do the thing
StarsIt would depend on the ingredients ye. They use a lot of magical beings which would be toxic, but eye of newt is mustard seeds iirc and I cook with that all the time
KiritaruOh.... Question... Based on a short dnd thing I was forced to participate in last weekend with my nephew. Is magic internal, external, or both? I was forced to take his premade wizard character, but we played in a non magic world and I was like...wth kid....imma be a monk then
Chaos Coordinator - she/herOOOOO I love this question
Does the wizard character require a focus to perform the magic
StarsIn any case, foreign magic can't stick to people for long. Those who have occulumancy have a strong sense of personal self and can 'flush out' foreign magic faster, which is why it's so hard
Chaos Coordinator - she/herBc he may have the POTENTIAL but without the tools be incapable, and perhaps this new world has no tools so he is forced to develop alternative skills
Adding some of my own ideas/thoughts here because I'm bored
- Molly has her kitchen equipment casually do work on its own and she easily cooks absolute feasts. She's acknowledged as a competent witch. Let's please finally cut down a bit on the tired bashing of her and make her a witch casually brewing potions in her kitchen with the stuff they grow in the garden (maybe the gnomes are useful for them and that's why the Burrow isn't warded against them)
- Building on that we could have a Molly redemption arc where she sees that the twins are the only ones who absorbed her lessons and actually are good and like to brew potions
- How about a fic where a wixen uses their potion skills to become some great chemist and make potions usable by muggles
- How do location, intent, latent magical energy, moon phase, astronomical alignment, astrology, and other factors affect the potion
- What about growing your own potions ingredients? Do they have to be grown in a magical environment? Do muggle fertilisers and implements affect them in any way?
- Is there any metal that doesn't work with magic and should be avoided/used carefully as an isolator and/or potential shield (and may that relate to the issues with technology? If so, which metal is the most likely culprit?)
- If you haven't read Michael Endes Night of Wishes you absolutely should for the most amazing potion ever made in a cauldron of frozen green flames. Don't bother with the tv show, as all Michael Ende adaptions it is awful and has a special place in hell
