A little town called Spoons

This melodramatic bullshit all started when I moved to a little town called "Spoons" on the edge of Boston. My mom decided to relocate to her town when she was called to be the town's detective and resident musician. Everyone knew of me, because of her. But I knew no one. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to, but learning a new set of people and getting new friends? Nah, it seems too impossible.

I looked in the mirror as I adjusted my older brother's old baseball Varsity Jacket. It was blue and pastel yellow. He was the best of them all and I cherished this jacket. He gave me a blank one but I decided to collect patches and pins as little keepsakes from all of the places I visited. So the sleeves were littered with patches. My hair was always a rat's nest though. It was always a difficult process to brush it in a ponytail but I was able to hold it in place with a lot of bobby pins and an ornamental pin to pin my bangs to the side. My hair is long like my mom's but curly like my dad's. I took my glasses out of the leather case and fit them on. My mom just got me tinted glasses with gold frames for my first day of school. Probably to cover up my red eyes. She's always looked out for me.

"Aw, it was like yesterday that you went away for preschool and now you're going away for your Junior year of high school!" She pinched my cheeks as I scoffed in annoyance. My mom is the toughest homicide detective that I've known but she's always had a soft spot for me. I pity the person who wants to date me. They're going to have to go through her first. I got out of her light blue pickup truck and slammed the door shut. It squeaked as it hit the car, this was the oldest car that we've got. But it's reliable. "Bye honey! Tell me all about your new friends!" She called out to me as I casually walked to the entrance of my new high school, Spoons High.

I was quickly greeted by an enthusiastic long hair and tanned girl. She had these thick glasses and pulled up high ponytailed hair but she had a great grin and a sunny disposition. "Hi! I and my boyfriend were thinking that you'd be cool to hang out with so, mind if we accompany you to your History class?" She was clutching her chemistry book and had a pastel yellow Jansport backpack with a white cat keychain hanging off of her blackberry. Her boyfriend came up behind her and joined us. He was tall, pale, and had gelled back hair. Wore a yellow shirt with black jeans and had this toothy grin on his face. They were both excited to meet me, even though I just stepped foot in camps. The guy seems like the person who would take your daughter out on his motorcycle. He seems like a bad boy. But my perception changed once he started rambling. "Well, if you don't want to, you don't have to. We're just eager to have friends. And you seem pretty nice from what we've heard of your mother. So we'd be overjoyed for you to sit with us!" He gave me this shiny smile. How in the hell does his appearance directly contradict his personality. "You've heard of my mom?" I questioned. "Your mom is a legend at this school. She's the first one to fully develop a glee club and was the valedictorian. She got a full ride to Harvard but rejected it to go to the University of Massachusets. People gave her shit for it for one month but she didn't mind." The starry-eyed girl told me all of the weird and fascinating stories about my mom as we walked to the history class we shared. I guess people respected my mom more than she knew.

I found my seat next to Cho and Cedric, which name's I just heard during class roll call. Cho was talking about the music department when suddenly the doors to the cafeteria opened to reveal a weirdly-dressed kind of gothic group. They wore semi-formal outfits, the men wearing black blazers and slacks and the women wearing tasteful dresses with high knee boots. They took the table that was 3 feet away from us. Barely opting to get a proper lunch. This was weird because the school had a late lunch period, so everyone was starving.  The one person who stood out to me was a lanky guy with platinum-blonde hair. He had bangs almost covering his fox-like eyes. It was flat and long, but it suited his defined jawbone. Only his eye color was gentle, which was a baby blue. He was wearing a pressed white dress shirt with a green tie. The guy looked like he came out of a private boarding school. I have no idea why he interested me, but he did. I was now interested in how he was so pale and why his teeth looks so sharp. He had this look on his face like he was bored of life. He looked gaunt and malnourished. The poor guy was probably starving so he should probably eat.  Cho and Cedric looked at the person I was staring at and started talking to me about said person. "His name's Draco Malfoy. The two people near him are Blaise and Pansy Parkinson. They've been friends since childhood. They belong to uber-rich but secluded families No one know's who they are but they come in and out of school, always on their hunting trips." Cedric explained. They're popular but no one is brave enough to go talk to them. Shame, they'd seem like the type of people who'd give you a full makeover.

I walked in to find Draco sitting in a wooden seat with an open seat next to him. I was in English class with him. Draco looked up at me and stared into my eyes with this demeaning glare. Like he was disgusted with my presence in his classroom. Great, I do absolutely nothing at this school and already someone hates me. I took the empty seat and started unpacking my pencils and pens along with my navy leather journal. He grunted as he took out his evergreen spiral notebook eyeing me as I uncapped a blue marker and wrote the title in a colorful calligraphic stroke.

The teacher assigned us Romeo and Juliet for us to read and I had to read with Draco Malfoy since we were grouped as partners. I thumbed through the pages of the red-covered book. Not going to lie, he intimidates me. Like now. He was looking at my lips as I was reading the assigned passage to him. He wanted me to read the whole thing. He practically begged for me to read the whole thing. I don't know why, probably because he was tired. I read in a strong tone, "My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late!" He started at me intently as I voice-acted Juliet. It was always my thing to voice act certain characters. It was fun, I grew up voicing mickey mouse and Cinderella. I finished the passage. Draco cleared his voice gruffly and started speaking to me. "How do you talk like that?" He asked me suddenly. I squinted my eyes in confusion. Furrowing my eyebrows as I try to think of a funny answer
"Uh well, I move my lips and vibrate my vocal cords. I don't know what you mean." I told him in a sarcastic tone. He scoffed, rolling his eyes before trying again.
"How is your voice so addictive?" I turned my head and gave him a disgusted face. Me- addicting? Is he trying to act out something? I looked at him with narrowed eyes.
"Slow your roll Romeo, you can't just ask me that creepy question without some much-needed context." He only flushed and grunted a "Whatever" as he turned to write the notes on the whiteboard.

What's with that guy?

---

I was in the office as I eavesdrop on Draco Malfoy trying to switch out of my class, ok this is ridiculous. The guy doesn't have to go through the hassle if I make a decision for him. I stomped towards him and said, "Fine, if you don't want to sit with me I'll switch with another person and swap partners. No need to go through the hassle of remaking your schedule for me." His eyes morphed from a cold hard expression to a- wait. A hurt one. He honestly looked hurt at the proposition of me switching partners.  He gave me brief pleading eyes before o looking away and shoving past me. What is this guy and what the hell is his problem?!

I got to the house and saw three people and an old person in a wheelchair. My mom waved to me and started introducing me to said, people. "Those three are around your age. Introduce yourselves!" The boy with messy black hair and glasses took my hand and shook it," Harry, Harry Potter." I shook back and introduced myself. "Mercy Sable." He started talking about his friends and introducing them. Hermoine Granger was the one with the thick brown curly hair, and Ron Weasly was the boy with freckles and reddish-orange hair. They seem like a golden trio. So happy and righteous. "Want to go to the Leaky Cauldron with us?" Hermoine offered. I nodded.

We sat down in a big cafe, drinking their signature Butter Beer drink. It was a butterscotch tea with honey lemon. People were bustling around, ordering coffee and biscuits. I drank the smoking tea as Harry explained the school that Hermoine and Ron also go to. "It's called Hogwarts boarding school. It's a stem school. Ron wants to get into animal science, I want to be a doctor and Hermoine wants to be a chemist." I nodded my head. Interested in their school. Maybe I can transfer there. My growing rivalry with Malfoy is not going to end well. And I wanted to become a Criminal Psychologist when I grow up. "Anyone at school that catches your eye?" Granger asked me. I sighed. Dreading that question."There's this weird guy named Draco Malfoy. I think he doesn't like me and thinks my voice is annoying. He's a pretty unpredictable guy." Everyone's eyes were on me. Ron stiffened, Harry's expression was serious and Granger grimaced. They seemed like they knew of him. Like he was an urban legend.
"What, you know him?" I asked.

"Something like that," Ron muttered

The next day at school, the dark group wasn't there. I sighed with relief in the cafeteria. "You're pretty happy that they're not here." Cho pointed out.
"Oh definitely. Draco's so weird. I am not going to deal with teenage drama in a new town with new people." I munched at my apple.

Nothing happened that day. Except I signed up for 3 clubs. Glee club. (Much to their excitement) Debate club (which was also started by my mom) and art club. Because why not?

The next day, Malfoy was sitting in English in the same spot. I go over to the table behind him to ask that person to switch with me but he snatched my wrist. And holy shit his hands were cold. It's like they're dead. He only tightened his grip as he started scoffing. "Sit. Here. Now." I snatched my hand as I rubbed it to warm it up. It felt like a snake was on my wrist. Who the fuck does this guy think he is? "What the fuck is your problem!" I said as he yanked me down on the bare seat. He didn't release my wrist. Wanting me to sit next to him. Fuming, I decide to rant to his face, "What the fuck is your deal?! First you want me gone, then you want me here! And you like my voice but won't say why!" His lips turned into a frown. His eyes looked away shyly. I sighed. For some reason, I hate seeing him sad. So I told him, "Ok, I'll sit next to you, as long as you're not weird and stuff." His eyes subtly brightened as he nodded in agreement. We spent that classroom with him listening to me read while propping his chin up with his arm, and me trying to decipher him. He looks mesmerized by my voice like I was charming him. WHich was weird since I've only known him for a week. With a rubbing of my eyes, I realized that this would become the new norm at this point.

---

I was packing up Cho's musical instruments in the trunk of her SUV when suddenly a car spun out of control and was about to hit me, door side in. My eyes widened as I saw the tires blow out and smoke from the friction of rubbing against concrete started drifting to my nose. Is this how I'm going to die? Suddenly I saw Malfoy hold me tightly and stopped the car. It's like he teleported. I looked into his eyes, they were an evergreen shade, he gritted his teeth showing his sharpened canines. He looked like a mythical creature as he blocked the car from hitting me with his right arm. He cradled my hips with his left arm. Holding me against the side of his torso. The car door was dented as his nails dug into it. His expression looked wild and desperate like he genuinely didn't want me to die. He pulled me out of the way of the car and pushed me against the SUV. He grabbed both of my shoulders and started yelling at me. Gripping my shoulders tightly with his painted nails. "Are you ok?! Did you get hurt in any way?! What was that guy thinking?!" He looked at the student who almost killed me and gave him a hateful, scathing look. The guy scurried away as he pulled me into his Cadillac. I shouted out to my friend Cedric, "Malfoy's bringing me to the Spoons state hospital!" Cedric nodded and started up his red Volvo, leading Cho into the car. Draco pushed me into the passenger side and took the driver's seat. He gently took my seatbelt and buckled me in. It's like he was kidnapping me and strapping his daughter into the backseat of a minivan SUV.

The drive to the hospital was spent with me and his bickering. "Draco drop me off at my house I'm fine!" He scoffed. Rolling his eyes, that bloody bastard. "No, you almost got hit by a car. Aren't you supposed to be scared?!" He looked at me worriedly. Like something's wrong with me. "I have other things to be scared about. Shit happens. I thank you for saving me. I don't know why or even how. But I'll get to the bottom of it." He stilled. Thinking about what he'll respond with I guess that struck a chord with him.
"What do you mean?" He asked me, an alarmed expression morphed on his face. Like he's worried about something. What's he worried about?
"Well, you were across the parking lot but somehow ended up in front of me, you dented the car with your bare fingernails. You had this green tint to your eyes and your teeth sharpened." He whipped his head to me, alarmed at my perceptiveness. My mom was a detective and always challenged me to these fake made-up cases when I was young. Like who stole the toothbrush? Or, who messed with the TV?  I grew up with these senses. But I found myself wishing I was ignorant when he stuttered a bunch of half-assed explanations.
"Look, I don't care. I won't tell anyone and it is just going to be a secret between us. But at least craft a believable story. Jeez." He quieted. He looked in my eyes and gave me a sincere, "Thank you." My heart fluttered at the sudden affection.

I want to see him like that all the time.

---

He rushed me to the hospital. Acting as if I lost my arm. "Father! She's hurt!" A man with long planting blonde hair looked back at me and smiled.
"Oh, son, is this the siren girl that you've been talking to me about? Let's get her on the bed and see how she is." He sent Draco out of the room and prohibited Cedric and Cho from entering once they arrived at the hospital.
"So you almost got hit by a car and my son saved you." He examined the possible injury points, my arms, hands, and legs but only a cut was on my cheek from the broken window. A small shard was stuck in it. He took out his tools. He disinfected my cut with a cotton swab. I winced at the sharp pain.
"Yeah, it was kind of weird how he was able to be strong enough to. But hey, some mysteries remained unsolved." my mom would scold me for saying that. She believed that all truth must be shown. I sat still as he slowly took out the small glass shard that was lodged in my cut.
"You know, he thinks you're a siren. And I can hear why. You should be a singer. Your last name is Sable, right? I was close friends with your mom." He told me.
"Really?" I asked. "Yes, she was the best singer out of the debate club. I looked up at her. She was basically my mentor. Tell her I say hi. And also, don't mind my son, he's awkward at getting to know new people." I nodded, fully understanding why he was like that. I might as well give Draco the benefit of the doubt.

Draco strode into my room as his father permitted visitors to enter. Cho and Cedric trailed behind, but Draco got in the first word. "I told you, you got hurt." He pointed to the bandaid on my cheek. I gave him an unamused expression. "Mal, it's nothing." I clamped my mouth shut, since when I was comfortable with calling him nicknames? But he only quirked his head to the side like an owl and told me, "It's ok, you can call me that." Cedric narrowed his eyes at Draco as Cho crossed her arms. Cedric went in front of Draco and started worrying over me. Cho also kept Draco away from me. What was their problem with him?
"Sable, you good?" He ruffled my hair. I sighed, grateful to have caring friends. "Ceddy, Cho, I'm fine. Nothing to worry about. Also, Draco saved me." I told them
"Wait how?" Cho asked me. "Well, he was close to me enough to push me away from the car." I lied to them with no hesitation. Draco gave me a thankful smile once they bought the whole thing. "Well, at least you're alive."
