Myne the Teacher

I groaned in pain, opening my eyes slowly. The last thing I remembered was being in a hospital after getting run over by a delivery truck…

Looking at the ceiling though, I only saw wood instead of cork board white. Slowly I sat up and looked around. The room I was in looked rustic, with hand made furniture. “Where… am I?” I muttered. Closing my eyes I fell into my mental Theater where I kept my mind organized. Film reels contained my knowledge and my memories were hidden as objects among the concessions stand. I walked in through the doors and looked around for anything new. Which is when I found a myriad of objects I knew nothing of, all made of wood or rough cloth.

“Okay that looks like trouble,” I huffed as I walked over and picked one up. Instantly I got overwhelmed by the memory of a sick little girl. And I recognized it.  “Oh dear twelve, I got Isekaied,” I groaned. I left the mental space and was back in the real world to look around.

I’m in the Librarian’s ascension world. At least my obsession is teaching and learning, so it should be easier to manage than an obsession with books.

Soon my new mother came in and confirmed my worries. That turquoise look could only be the mother from that anime.

“Oh Myne, you shouldn’t be up yet. You had a fever,” Her mother said with worry.

Days passed as I recovered… however I decided to immediately ask of my father a crochet hook, and my mother spare threads. Of my sister I requested cotton balls, or as I found they were called here they were Bulion Puffs. Nobody really saw the use in them, however I found them rather useful~

My mother in my previous life and I were fond of making small animals out of yarn. Using thread was a little more tricky, but I had fun with it. My sister really liked it too!~ she would play with the animals and put on little shows for me to watch. My new mother quite liked the little animals too and would sit by me while we made them together.

A couple days later, when I was feeling better, my sister brought me seashells.

“Seashells?” I asked her curiously, holding one with wonder in my eyes.

“Yeah! They washed up in the shore today~” Tuuli said merrily.

“Could i break a couple?” I asked, maybe a little too bluntly.

“B-break?!” Tuuli cried out.

“I can use them as scales to for a dragon~” I said merrily as I showed her a tiny dragon plush I was working on. It was large enough to fit in the palm of your hand… but I was struggling to get the scales just right.

“So it’s for That?” She asked, taking it from my hands and looking it over.

“Yeah… pretty cute isn’t it?” I hummed merrily. As a child I was obsessed with dragons of all shapes and sizes~ even when I grew up I still held that love deep in my heart.

“It’s really cool~ you called it a dragon?” She asked.

I nodded, “Dragon. A mysterious reptile of great strength.” I smiled fondly at it. This body’s Devouring would truly be a great strain on me, but at least I knew many things I was passionate about. Passion was my way of life, battling the serpent of Depression with my passions.

“So what shape do you need the shell in?” She asked.

I made the shape with my index fingers and thumbs, “I need them as small as possible with a hole in the round part and the pointed facing away from it. Two holes would be better though, so I can make them nice and firmly bound. Like shell buttons.”

She nodded, “I’ll see if papa wants to help!~” she said, taking the shells to our father.

Days later I was able to make the Dragon. It was the best thing I could hope for! And there were enough to make several more!~ Five dragons lay on the side table, beautiful little dragons…

“When was the last time I made these?” I wondered quietly.

“Myne, would you like to come to do the shopping with me?” My mother asked.

“Shopping?” I asked, thinking it over, “sure! Let me go get ready!~” I ran to my bedroom to grab my dragons. Hopefully they would be good for trading…

My mother carried me on her back to do the shopping. I wasn’t queasy at the sight of death like the Myne of the anime… but… “mommy? Can I take a break at that stall? I’m feeling rather tired…” I asked, pointing at where I saw a book.  It was ever so ornate, with gold and rough gems on the cover.

She looked shocked, “are you sure Myne?”

I nodded, “you can get more shopping done without all my questions,” I reasoned.

She sighed, “alright Myne. We’ll see if they are up for it.” She walked over to the stall, “pardon me, my daughter is feeling unwell. May I leave her here while I finish my shopping?”

“Oh sure!” The woman behind the stall said merrily.

“I don’ mind. Poor girl, hasn’t been out of the house in so long…”

Do they know me? Mother probably knows a lot of people around here…

“Thank you,” I said with a small smile. They had me sit atop a box and watch the goings on of the street.

After a while my eyes were drawn to the book… hmmm…

“Mister?” I asked the merchant.

“Yes little miss?” He asked.

“What’s that?” I asked, pointing at the book.

“That’s a book. I took it as collateral for a Noble… but the noble gave it up. Now I’m stuck with the thing until I can sell it,” he grumbled.

“Maybe I could offer a trade?” I asked.

“A trade?” He asked, sounding intrigued.

“I would like to trade something of Equal or greater value for that book,” I said confidently.

“Soooo… what would you trade for a Noble’s book?~” he hummed.

I pulled out my dragons, their craftsmanship obvious at just a glance. I only brought four of them since the one at home mattered so much to me. It was the first one… “these are hand crafted, it should be obvious how well they were made,” I said proudly, holding them up.

He took one, looking it over. “Well… hmmm… I’ll trade two dragons for the book,” he said conclusively.

I smiled brightly, “that sounds good~” I hummed.

He nodded, looking over the other two, “and how does… two small gold for each of the others sound?”

“I think that’s good,” I agreed.

He unlocked the case and handed me the book, “be sure to take good care of it. This is worth a lot of Lyon,” he warned.

I smiled brightly, “yes sir!” I then went back to where I was sitting before to try reading the new book… the pictured seemed to depict the religious text of the church. It was rather fascinating to read it for myself. And the two coins went into the inside cover…

When mother returned she looked annoyed, “now Myne, you shouldn’t hold the merchandise of these kind people so casually.”

“But it’s my book?” I asked.

“Yours?” She asked, taken off guard.

I nodded, and the merchant piped in, “she traded these for it,” he pointed at the dragons.

“Your little dolls? But I thought you cared about those a lot?” Mother asked.

“Hmmm… what I cared about was the making them part. The dragons themselves didn’t matter nearly as much as the chance to make them, especially with you and sis,” I explained to her. I could never stay still after all… it made me feel antsy to not be doing anything.

“Oh alright Myne… let’s go home,” she sighed, offering me a hand. I hopped down and walked up to her, stumbling a little from the weight of the book. She chuckled, scooping me up in one arm, carrying me home.

That night…

Father stumbled as he tried teaching me what the book said.

I didn’t want to stay stationary…

I couldn’t. It made me feel so antsy to just be in one place for so long… So I did my best around the house, much to the worry of my mother. She asked me to help her make more little animals, which were selling well at the markets. Apparently items like that were very valuable to a noble. The shelled ones even more so!

When I was better, my Father offered to take me to work with him. “My coworker can teach you to read better than I. Do you wanna walk with me to work?” He offered.

Oh that filled me with excitement!~

“Yes please!~” I said merrily, grinning brightly. I then ran off to grab my book. The gem of its covers shone briefly at my touch. I smiled fondly before picking it up and running back to my father.

He chuckled, “why don’t I hold that for you?” He offered.
