whatever you want us to be, love

the night of april 4th, 1986

the movie had been quite entertaining, even though Remus had already seen it numerous of times. what was there to dislike about it? not to mention that the main character was played by, in Remus’s opinion, one of the best looking men walking planet earth right now.

he would obviously never tell Sirius that.

after the movie, they went back to Regulus’s house. it was late and there was plenty of room for the lot of them to stay there, anyways.

“how did you like the movie, Moony?” Sirius asked, as Remus threw an arm around his shoulder.

“loved it.” he smiled, looking down. “you?”

“‘twas alright. let’s just say Ralph Macchio made it a lot better.” Remus let out a gasp. “what? you can’t deny he’s fun to look at.”

Sirius chuckled, stopping in the middle of the upstairs’ hallway, standing on his tippy toed to give Remus a quick kiss.

“i uhm, i think i ought to be staying with Regulus again—”

“i didn’t think so,” Regulus said, making Sirius practically jump up. he was leaning against the doorframe of his own room, grinning. “i’m not gonna force you up in here with me, when you could be spending a night with your boyfriend in a proper bed.”

Sirius looked at him as a way of saying ‘don’t you mind?’, to which Regulus shook his head.

“okay then,” Remus decided, taking Sirius’s hand. “come on, love.”

he gave Regulus a smile, which he returned, walking back into his own room.

the april cold was obviously noticeable throughout the entire house, Remus mentally facepalmed himself for not bringing warmer Pj’s. he could obviously wear one of his regular sweaters, but he didn’t like wearing his every day clothes to bed, + the fact that Sirius was already wearing one of them, and he suspected he would need the others for the remaining days of their trip. he pulled a t-shirt over his head, making a mental note to ask if he could do his laundry here, tomorrow.

a bit later, the both of them were laying in bed. Remus felt as if if he closed his eyes, he’d be asleep in less than a minute. but Sirius was wide awake, (when was he not?)

“what are we?” Remus asked, closing his eyes. he couldn’t care less if he fell asleep now.

“whatever you want us to be, love.” he could feel Sirius’s grin against his shoulder.

“i know what i’m about to say is really weird,” Remus started. “because we’ve only been, together? for such a short amount of time, but it’s not uncomfortable, or anything?”

“what do you mean?”

“i mean like,” Remus sighed. “i normally hate getting close with someone this early on, because it’s always uncomfortable. but with you, with this, it’s different. i don’t care that we’re going fast.”

he wasn’t even lying, he was sort of afraid he had put it the wrong way. the situation lacked its usual awkwardness; Remus hated serious conversations, knowing Sirius did as well.

Sirius smiled, kissing his cheek. Remus felt himself smile as well, snuggling deeper under the covers.

“‘night, moony.”

“‘night, love.”

april 5th, 1986

the next morning, a little after breakfast, Remus was in the laundry room. thanking himself for reminding him to ask about it.

but how the fuck did a washing machine work?

he didn't want to be a bother, and ask how it worked. not only would that be awkward to ask, it would also be really embarrassing. Remus tried his best to think about how his mum, and how she always did it. but then he remembered he never actually payed attention to that.

“is there space left in there?” Peter’s voice sounded from behind him, making him turn. “i have some laundry too, and it’s such a waste to—”

“of course!” was Pete expecting he knew how to use it? was he expecting he would just turn it on? “can you maybe, uhm…” Remus murmured.

“what?” Peter asked, brows furrowed as he added the laundry of his own into the machine.

“do you know how, how… how it works?” Remus stared at the floor, feeling Peter’s eyes on him.

“you don’t know how to use a… washer…?”

“shut it.” Remus sat down on the counter, watching as Peter started the washer, adding in a generous amount of laundry detergent, and some other things Remus didn’t recognize.

“so?” Peter started, sitting down next to him. “what’s going on with you and Sirius?”

whatever you want us to be, love. those words were playing over and over in his mind, like a broken record. he smiled, looking at Peter, who had very clearly been waiting ages for the answer.

“we’re dating.” Remus said, grinning, looking at his lap. “we haven’t really discussed it, but i think we are. i like him a lot. and i think he likes me too, so that’s a good thing.” he let out a laugh.

“thank God you finally realized, it was getting mad annoying to watch you guys swarm over one another for years. James owes me twenty bucks!”

“you bet on us?!” Remus gasped out, making Peter burst out in laughter.

“hell yes i did! you know James; you could literally get married in front of him and he wouldn’t catch on, the oblivious fucker.”

Remus looked at him, brows raised, breaking out in laughter moments later. he didn’t even mind Peter betting on them. if it was anyone else, and he was betting against James; he would do it too. James was the world’s most oblivious mother fucker.

they made their way downstairs, where Sirius and James were sitting close together, writing something down on a paper, laughing every now and then. Peter gave him a look, as Remus rolled his eyes; at this point, he didn’t even want to know what they were up to.

Lily was baking an apple pie, Regulus was in the garden, reading and smoking.

“i’m so jealous of people who can bake,” Peter admitted, sitting down at the breakfast table. “i can cook, i can’t bake.” Lily let out a giggle, now adding raisins to the filling.

“i’m the other way around; baking? sure. cooking? hell no.” Remus sat down to Pete, listening to their conversation in enjoyment; he wasn’t able to bake, or cook, in general.

“and you, Remus?” Lily asked him, she was adding something on the top of the pie. before he could even respond, Peter let out a loud laugh.

“him? absolutely not. he could blow up a kitchen while boiling water.” Peter ushered Lily to lean closer, which she did. “spoiler; that almost actually happened once.”

Lily gasped, staring at Remus, who had buried his face in his hands by now, laughing.

“there is no way!”

“what has he done now?” Sirius asked, entering the kitchen. Remus looked at him with eyebrows raised. “oh come on Moony, i know they’re talking about you.”

“apparently,” Lily said, still laughing. “he blew up a kitchen once—”

“almost! almost blew up a kitchen!” Remus interrupted.

“who blew up a kitchen?” Regulus — who had came in without making a single sound — asked. Remus dropped his head again.

“why am i not surprised.” James casually said, walking towards a cupboard to grab a glass. “it smells awesome, what you makin’?” he grabbed Lily’s waist from behind, making her burst out in giggles. she turned and kissed him.

“ugh,” Sirius groaned. “if only i could do that.”

“kiss James?” Regulus raised a brow, as Sirius flicked him.

“no.” Sirius sat down on the countertop. “kiss my boyfriend.” Remus turned towards him.

“who said you couldn’t?”

“you!” Sirius protested. “if i’d do that, you’d definitely push me away.”

“who wouldn’t.”
