impossible not to smile

april 3rd, 1986

“she’s on the road, again…” Sirius sang in a voice unnecessarily deep compared to both his own voice, and the actual song.

“it’s, ‘she’s lost control, again’, not ‘she’s on the road, again’” Remus took a sip from the tea they had just stopped to get, looking over at James who was grinning.

“i know that, dumbass.” Sirius beamed, swinging his lanky legs onto the sofa of the car, resting them on Peter’s lap, who pushed them off instantly. “it just has to match our vibe!”

Remus shook his head and turned the sound on a bit louder. even though the song wasn’t necessarily a happy one, it was on the mixtape; he didn’t feel like skipping to the next one.

“hey can you maybe stop at a phone booth in a bit? i wanna call Lils.” James asked, not looking up from the book laying in his lap. Remus nodded and made a turn into a small town.

“oh please, you called her yesterday! at the motel! for forty minutes!” Peter complained, throwing his hands up as Remus stopped in front of the booth. James practically jumped out of the car with his wallet, immediately dialing.

“are we gonna have to wait for him this whole time?” Sirius groaned, unbuckling his seatbelt and opening the door.

“what are you doing? god, you’re not leaving me alone with the looney, are you?” Peter looked towards a happily chattering James.

“i’m not leaving you alone! Moony is still here.” Sirius said, adjusting his jacket. “i’m going for a walk, you lot comin’ or not?”

Remus looked towards Peter, then looked at James, who didn’t look like he was going to be done soon.

“you guys go; i don’t feel like walking, and well, we can’t really leave him on his own, can we?” Peter unbuckled his seatbelt as well, and laid himself down. “i’ll take a nap, or something.”

“alright then.” Remus said, getting out of the car as well. “see you Pete.”

“see ya’”

Remus and Sirius walked for a bit, the town looked a tad like the town the Potters lived in, or so Remus thought. it wasn’t a big town, more like a little farmers village. Sirius reached in the pocket of his jacket, grabbing a cigarette. he lit it and took a drag, throwing his head back while doing so.

“needed that,” he admitted, holding the cig out for Remus to grab, which he gladly did. “its way too cold for april.”

“on God, couldn’t it just be a couple of degrees warmer? i’m literally gonna freeze to my death.” Remus chuckled, taking a drag himself.

“i’ll make sure you won’t, i’ll even let you wear my jacket.” Sirius stated, proudly grinning as if he had just did the most charitable thing in existence. Remus let out a gasp, holding his hand over his heart.

“you… you would give me your jacket?” he said with a grin, throwing an arm around Sirius’s shoulder. Sirius immediately stopped walking, dead serious look on his face.

“lend. i would lend you my jacket. don’t get too enthusiastic, Moony.” Sirius grinned, his arms finding their way around the taller boy’s neck. Remus’s arms were holding his waist by now. Sirius leaned in closer, kissing him on the mouth. Remus gladly returned the kiss.

it started to rain, it didn’t stop them. if one thing, it made them hang onto each other even tighter, not planning to let go anytime soon.

after a bit, Sirius pulled back, leaning his forehead on Remus’s, smirking. Remus started giggling, pulling him even closer to himself.

“see,” Sirius started, poking his chest. “i would give you my jacket…”

“… i can sense there’s a ‘but’ to that.” Remus was still grinning, so was Sirius. it was like it was impossible not to smile.

“but i’d expect it back, eventually. preferably somewhere the next day, or whatever.”

“ah, i thought—”

BEEP BEEP BEEP

the sound made them jump apart. they turned towards it and were immediately met with Remus’s yellow Mercedes. a smirking James behind the wheel, a just as smirking Pete looking at them from the back seat.

James drove closer to them, the boys were dripping wet by now. it was only then Remus realized how hard it was actually raining. as the car stopped next to them, James and Pete opened the doors, letting the boys in.

the silence was loud, but both Peter and James were grinning. Remus and Sirius were literally just staring ahead of themselves, avoiding any type of eye contact.

“i knew it.”

once again, the boys had decided to set up a tent for the night. after checking if they were on someone’s property first, of course.

“wait,” James said as he looked through the trunk. “where’s the second air mattress?” Remus shrugged and walked over, helping him search.

before, they had had two double air mattresses, which meant that it had enough space for everyone. now that apparently one of them was missing, they had to find some other solution.

“two of us in the tent, two of us in the car.” Peter stated. “i don’t really mind where—”

“Moony and I will take the tent, he’s too lanky to even lay down in the car. otherwise his neck will be hurting again tomorrow, and if that happens, that’s all we’ll hear about for the rest of the day.” Sirius said, closing the trunk and sitting on top of it.

“alright…” James grinned. “as long as you don’t fuck; it’s my tent, i want it back clean.” Remus shot him a glare and James burst out in laughter. “i had to clarify! i trust you, Moony. Pads, however? not with things like this.”

“ouch.” Sirius said, taking a sip of the beer he had previously bought. “no need to harm me like that, Jamesie.” James walked up to him and tried to flick his forehead as Sirius attempted to duck away. failing miserably.

Sirius’s long legs were kicking around mindlessly, literally looking like a toddler having an anger tantrum. James was crawling above him trying to find his face. they looked like literal toddlers.

“you’d almost think they are the ones fucking.” Peter laughed out just loud enough for Remus to hear, Remus snickered in response. anyone who didn’t know Sirius and James, could think they’re dating. truth was that they were just inseparable, they had known each other since they were about four years old, obviously they were close.

Peter and Remus had known each other just about that same amount of time as well, even though some people might not have guessed it, they were the bestest of friends. just the fact that they were both introverted, and didn’t feel the need to express everything to the world like James and Sirius did.

after all Peter knew everything about Remus, the other way around as well. they had grown to understand each other without words, that was Remus’s favorite thing about their friendship; they didn’t need words.

after quite some time, Sirius had finally given up on trying to move away. James had repeatedly flicked his head, then moved away. Sirius was still laid out on the trunk of the car, holding his stomach as he was laughing.

it was such a simple moment, but in that moment Remus knew the image would stay in his mind forever. he realized he was maybe staring for a bit too long, because Peter poked his side.

“you alright?” Peter asked him with a grin on his face, Remus just shook his head and grabbed a bottle of beer as well, opening it and taking a sip.

“better than ever.” Remus admitted, to all honesty. Peter just nodded and fixed his eyes on the camp fire again. Remus, however, looked back at Sirius, who was grinning widely at him by now. Remus smiled back, the muscles in his face taking over.

“oh for the love of god,” James groaned. “stop with the eyefucking, or whatever its supposed to be.”

Remus felt his cheeks heat up, he looked at Sirius from under his eyelashes. Sirius, who had clearly already seen that Remus was looking at him, ran a hand through his hair and winked.

they ended the night with the roasting of some marshmallows Sirius had previously found in a store. Peter almost lit them all on fire, by burning his marshmallow; but outside of that it was alright.

“have you seen my jumper, i’ve—” Remus crawled into the tent, closing it as he knew Sirius was already inside. he turned towards the boy already laying on the mattress, who was either pretending to read or just staring blandly at the pages.

“you know that’s not how your supposed to read, right?” Remus asked, laying down next to him. “your actually supposed to move your eyes and read the words.”

it was only then Remus realized where his jumper had gone, he didn’t mind, though. he laid down a bit more comfortably, as Sirius shifted next to him, resting his head on Remus’s shoulder.

“am just tired.” Sirius put the book aside and closed his eyes, Remus held up one of his hands, running them through the silky smooth black hair of the boy next to him. he kissed him quickly on the head too, as he closed his eyes.

“‘night Moony.”

“‘night.”
