isn’t it, love?
april 2nd, 1986
that night the both of them fell asleep in the chairs, after talking about everything and nothing for a very long time. they didn’t discuss the kiss again, but Remus didn’t care this time.
the group had breakfast again that morning, Mary and Marlene joining them too. both Mary and James shooting grinning glares at Remus, who decided to act clueless; smiling back at them.
“so,” Mary asked, eying both Remus and Sirius. “did you lot have a good night?”
“yeah,” Remus rubbed his neck. “my neck hurts a bit, though.” James practically choked on his bacon, Pete slapped him on the back a couple of times until he was alright again.
“thanks Pete,” James groaned, coughing one more time. “oh really,” he continued? “and why would that be?”
Remus let out a laugh, earning suspicions looks from everyone, ‘cept for Sirius obviously.
“because those chairs were bloody uncomfortable, thats why. my neck feels like a wooden plank, too.” Sirius admitted, leaning back into the chair he was currently in, taking another bite of his toast.
“why were you lads sleeping on the chairs in the first place, though?” Peter asked, Remus just snickered and side eyed Sirius, who was, to his surprise, already looking at him; strands of black, curly hair covering his face.
why did they? Remus tried to think back of last night; Sirius kissing him, him kissing back… they could have taken it further, neither of them had felt the need at the moment. Remus was honestly a bit glad they hadn’t, it would have been way too overwhelming, for sure.
instead they had talked, (a couple more kisses sneaked in along side) they had talked about literally everything that came to their minds. at some point, Sirius had fallen asleep in his chair; Remus was not feeling like either waking him, or carrying him to the bed, so he just made sure there was a blanket covering the boy and a pillow to rest his neck.
Remus had thought it would be unfair to take the bed, to have Sirius sleeping in a rock hard chair, but to be laying in a comfortable bed himself. after a bit, he grabbed his own pillow, and another blanket he had found in some cabinet, and made himself comfortable in the other chair. he kissed Sirius’s hair beforehand, then took place in the chair of his own.
he stared at Sirius for a bit, observing the way his eyes moved as he was dreaming, the way his hair looked so effortlessly pretty, the way he pouted every once in a while— stop, he had reminded himself. this is creepy. stop staring, freak!
not a lot later, Remus had fallen into a peaceful sleep himself.
“we were sleeping on the chairs because we didn’t want to share the bed,” Remus explained. “and Sirius had fallen asleep in one of them, i didn’t want to be selfishly and just take the bed.”
“oh i did not fall asleep first! that was you, Moony.” Sirius threw his hands up in the air, Remus knew better than to protest. plus the fact that it was nine in the morning, he didn’t feel like protesting, anyways.
“of course i did.” he rolled his eyes and took a sip of tea, James was already looking at him with raised eyebrows.
“add ‘yes sweetheart’ to that, and you’re like my parents,” Marlene stated. “one has to do as the other says,” she looked at Remus, who rolled his eyes in response. “and the other thinks they have the power over the other; AKA, an old married couple.”
“oh please,” Sirius laughed. “as if.”
Remus kept quiet, he shook his head and laughed. Marlene was sort of right, he would never admit that out loud, though.
“you know i’m right.”
sadly, the girls had to go home again. they exchanged numbers, so the boys could call their home numbers, if they wanted to.
“pity they had to leave, i was quite fond of them.” Sirius admitted as Peter and Remus eyed each other, then burst out in laughter.
“are you eighty years old?” Peter was still laughing, Remus was trying hard not to laugh again, instead trying to keep his focus on the road.
“what?!”
“oohh,” Peter put on his grandma voice. “such an awful pity they had to leave, they were quite the girls, weren’t they? very fond of them.”
Remus, Peter and now James too, burst out in laughter once again. Sirius kicked the back of Remus’s chair, not a lot later, laughing himself.
“oh shut up!”
Peter lit a fag and took a drag, under heavy protest of James, who was still, very much anti cigarette. Sirius, being who he was, lit a cigarette as well, as to which James banged his head against the headrest.
“oh come on!” James protested, turning around to (attempt) to grab the lit cigarettes from their hands. “okay! but don’t blame me when you don’t make it past twenty one.”
“you won’t make it past twenty one, with the constant complaining you do,” Remus stated. “my grandma complained less than you do, look at her; six feet under right now.”
“Moony, don’t get me wrong,” Sirius took another drag. “but you’re getting yourself into more and more bad Karma by saying things like that.”
“touché.”
“you know your in the wrong when even pads agrees your taking it too far.” Pete stated, with a grin. Sirius smacked the back of his head in response.
“i’m just saying! people who don’t complain, live longer.” Remus reached back, finding the cigarette in Sirius’s hand and taking it from him, taking a drag himself. “in that case i better start complaining.” he murmured, now earning a slap from James.
“don’t say that!”
“it’s alright, Prongs.” Sirius said. “Moony complains all the time, more than you, if that’s even possible.” both Remus and James gave him the finger, earning a laugh from Pete.
“you guys better start taking me as an example, I will live past twenty one, unlike you lot.” Peter grinned.
“oh Pete,” Sirius fake-praised. “aren’t you the best!” he hugged him like Peter was his lost son, who he hadn’t seen in years. Peter laughed and tried to wiggle himself out of his grip. “isn’t he the best?!” Sirius asked the boys in front, still holding Pete in a tight grip.
“absolutely! god, what we would do without our lord and savior, Peter Michael Pettigrew!” James gasped out.
“i will blow smoke in your face if you call me that again.” Peter threatened.
“i’ll do that no matter what he calls you,” Sirius said. “Love, cig, please.” Remus’s heart fluttered at the nickname, even though Sirius called everyone ‘love’, it still felt special to him. Remus handed him the cigarette with a dumb grin on his face.
“come on Moony! i liked you!” James murmured, as Remus laughed.
“too bad.”
Sirius and Peter both took a drag and blew it out, straight into a protesting James’s face. Remus was full on laughing, effort to hold his attention on the road.
this whole thing went on for a while; James protesting against the smell of cigarettes, Sirius blowing the smoke into his ear.
“can we get like some chips? whatever, really. i’m hungry.” James asked Remus, who nodded, happy he wasn’t the only one who was literally starving.
“you’re not hungry, you just wanna get away from Pads and I, and our lovely smoke sticks.”
“Pete,” Sirius said, throwing an arm around the other boy. “is this the right time to say you’ve always been my favorite?”
James gasped dramatically, holding a hand over his heart.
“it was all fake? i can’t believe this, sob.”
“sob?” Peter asked, mischievous grin playing on his face.
“our pretty boy’s initials.” Sirius smacked him on the head once again.
“your initials are sob?” Remus laughed out, looking in the mirror, seeing Sirius glare at him.
“don’t laugh too hard, John.” Sirius swung the hair out of his face.
“foul.” Remus gasped, grabbing the cigarette back from him.
James and Peter shot each other a knowing look, to which Remus shook his head; knowing exactly what was about to happen, again.
“how come you guys always share fags?” Peter asked, resting his head on his fist, as if being very interested.
“because it’s our thing.” Sirius stated, looking into the mirror, meeting Remus’s eyes from there, smirking.
“your thing?” James grinned, suddenly looking very interested in the map he was holding.
“yup,” Remus held onto the wheel tighter, as he noticed. “our thing.” Sirius leaned into the headrest of Remus’s seat, bringing his hands to his shoulders and massaging. it was a trick, Remus could tell; he was practically able to see the look on Sirius’s face.
“isn’t it, love?” Remus was trying so desperately hard to hide the grin on his face, playing along, with the pure purpose of wanting to see Peter and James’s reactions.
“of course.” Sirius murmured.
“Jesus fucking Christ,” Peter groaned. “if you wanna fuck; just pull over, find a motel, or a bush, whatever you prefer… but leave us,” he pointed between himself and James. “out of this!”
Sirius made a ‘pffff’ sound, still grinning like a maniac. Remus met his eyes in the mirror and shook his head, grinning as well.
“yeah, exactly! thank you Pete!” James groaned.
“what are you on about, we aren’t even doing anything?” Sirius acted like he actually had no clue what they were on about. if Remus hadn’t known it was a trick, he would have believed him instantly.
“dear, don’t distract me while im driving.”
they decided to stay in another motel for the night, again. the rest of the day had been deliciously uneventful; they had pretty much driven all day, stopping every once in a while when one of them saw a pretty spot. the sun was also out at some point, Remus seeing a perfect opportunity to get a bit sun kissed. he had been pale as a ghost all winter, and a tan suited him.
“that today, was absolutely brilliant!” Sirius squealed as he threw himself onto the bed, as Remus closed the door and started laughing as well.
“i know, right?! they totally thought we were being for real, as well!”
Sirius was quite literally rolling from laughter right now, it was impossible not to laugh at that on its own. Remus felt the tears stinging in his eyes, just thinking about the situation today.
“their entire reaction was just,” Sirius was still out of breath. “it was so… i forgot the word.” Remus giggled as well, sitting down next to him.
“i think there’s no word to describe their reaction.” Remus laughed, as Sirius sat down next to him. literally sitting like kids during a sleepover party, at least that was what it reminded him off.
Remus kissed him quickly. it still felt great to feel him kiss back, Remus couldn’t even imagine how embarrassing it would be if Sirius didn’t. life was great, it couldn’t get better. not right now.
