letter 15

20 April 1996

Dear Starboy,

I guess we're dating! (I am grinning wildly right now) I have to admit, this is my first relationship, and it's weird that it's entirely through letters, but what matters is us.

Though I fully despise Tom, I think he's justified in being upset. Just because he hurt Daisy doesn't make it any less hurtful to him. He definitely should not have gotten Gatsby killed (albeit indirectly) over it, but he still had a valid reason to be angry.

I agree about Jordan and Nick's relationship. It didn't add anything to the story and they could have had those conversations as friends and it would've progressed the plot all the same.

Pure-blood arranged marriages... Does your father have anyone lined up for you? I don't want to be Gatsby in this situation. Don't worry, I won't change myself for you as he did.

By the way, most muggle stories do not end in death.

I visited America with my family once when I was a child. We went to a place called Florida, which has a lot of beaches and is very hot! We took a muggle type of transportation called an aeroplane. It flies in the air very fast. I don't understand the physics of how they stay up in the sky without magic since they are so heavy.

Now that we've established that we're dating and know each other's identities, are you willing to talk about yourself more? I'd like to have some deeper conversations - not that our "book club" wasn't deep. Let's start with: Why are you called Starboy?

Love,

Bookworm

P.S. Can we keep using the pen names? Just in case someone else comes across our letters.

"Now that we've established that we're dating and know each other's identities, are you willing to talk about yourself more?" Draco repeated to himself. Would he describe himself, or Theo? He supposed it would have to be a combination of the two, but Draco wanted her to like him, not Theo. He had to talk about himself. After all, he had told Hermione to not change herself for him.

Dear Bookworm,

Don't worry, this is my first real relationship, too. There was one time in our third year that Pansy was obsessed with me and followed me around everywhere, but that was one-sided.

It's way too soon for my father to be thinking about who he wants me to marry. Regardless, you won't be like Gatsby. You're way too stubborn to take no for an answer, so I wouldn't even be able to get married to my hypothetical arranged marriage if that were the case. Plus, you are way too sure of yourself that you wouldn't dare wait years for a man that was already spoken for. (Also, you are so beautiful that I'm sure another man would have snatched you up in those years.)

This aeroplane contraption sounds very interesting. One day, we can go on holiday to America together and take an aeroplane. Hopefully not to Florida though, I hate hot weather, it's not good for my pale complexion.

I am called Starboy because my family has always been fascinated by astronomy. Most of the children are named after constellations. It's also why my owl is named Comet.

My interest in muggles also began at a young age. My family owns a lot of real estate in magical Britain, but also in muggle Britain. My father wanted to keep me on the wizarding side of things, but once, my mother had some matters to take care of with one of the muggle buildings we owned (I think it's called a mall) and she had to take me with her since I was so young. I had never seen so many shops and things to look at in one place. Everywhere I looked, there was a new thing I'd never seen before.

My questions for you:
What was your favorite part of growing up as a muggle?
What was your greatest fear about coming to Hogwarts? I can imagine it's difficult to be thrust into a whole new world at the ripe age of eleven.

Love,

Starboy

Hermione furrowed her brows and bit her bottom lip. "Some things don't add up," she muttered to Ginny, who sat across from her at the library table.

Ginny pursed her lips, "What do you mean?"

"Starboy is supposed to be top of the class in Potions, but Harry, Malfoy, and I are all better than Theo. He says here that Pansy was obsessed with him in year three, but wasn't she all over Malfoy? Especially when his arm was in that sling. He says he has a pale complexion, but Theo's quite tan. And then, finally, he says that his family owns real estate. Last time I checked the Pure-Blood Directory, the Nott family, at least Theo's father, owns a line of apothecaries." Hermione was so busy rambling, that she didn't even notice Harry slip into the chair next to Ginny's.

"I hate to break it to you, Mione," Harry said, piquing Hermione's attention, "But your love-letter-pen-pal-boyfriend-person sounds a lot like Malfoy."

Hermione gasped, "It's not! We already established that it's Theo! Why would I ever like Draco Malfoy?"

Ginny raised an eyebrow, "Why would you ever like Theodore Nott?"

"Because how he acts is not how he actually is. He pretends to be tough and mean around Malfoy and Zabini so he fits in with them, but on the inside, he's a really nice and caring person - and it shows in his letters," Hermione defended.
