"YUUJI! BREAKFAST IS READY!"

"i'm coming, auntie!" the boy's muffled voice could be heard from upstairs. slamming his bedroom's door open, he leaned against the frame to put his socks on.

"don't start without me!" he rushed back inside, looking for god knows what.

the older woman only shook her head in amusement. hearing slow footsteps, she fixed her posture, giving a sincere smile to the newcomer.

"good morning."

"good morning, mr. nanami." she greeted him in return, immediately serving the man, "your son will join us soon."

"at this rate, he's going to be late for his first day." the man sighed, fixing his tie.

"don't worry, sir. my husband will make sure to drive him on time."

"thank you." he nodded, "i cleared out my morning schedule, so i can accompany you."

"that's great, sir." the woman's voice trembled in excitement. she knew that yuuji would be over the moon to hear the good news.

nanami kento was a busy man, which made him miss out on many important events.

yuuji didn't particularly mind it. he got to see his dad before and after school, which was all that he needed.

he knew that some of his friends back in middle school didn't have a present dad, and he couldn't help but feel bad for them. his dad was the best, and he loved him.

as they began eating, yuuji's eyes wandered around the huge table, finally setting on the empty seat across him.

when his grandmother would visit, she would sit next to his dad, in that same exact spot.

if he had a mom, he'd want her to sit there.

he mentioned it once, but his grandmother got upset, so he didn't dare to bring it up again.

"we don't speak of that woman in this household." she scolded him, "characters of the past stay in the past."

yuuji liked his grandmother, because she was his only grandmother.

she spoiled him to death, always insisting that he calls her 'mom', but the word never rolled well in his tongue.

"you don't have a mom, yuuji. and it's okay, there's a lot of people who don't have moms or dads nowadays." she would always add.

against his grandmother's wishes, every year, about a week or two before the new school year, yuuji would secretly wish to meet his mom when he blowed out his birthday candles.

he didn't care what she said— he trusted his dad's initial judgment. if his dad liked you in the past, then it meant that you were a good person.

also, yuuji didn't pay much attention to his biology classes, but he's pretty sure that kindness and personality were hereditary.

deep in his heart, he believed that he got them from you.

"sukuna. i won't repeat myself a third time. if you don't get your ass here in 3 seconds, i swear i'll make your ancestors dance cha-cha in front of you." you threatened with a wooden spoon in your hand.

"you said that you'll make them dance baladi last time." he yelled from his room.

"okay. one." you started the countdown, and you heard him scrambling around in his room.

"I'M UP, I'M UP."

"two."

a loud bang, followed by a groan.

"two and half." you were tapping your foot on the ground.

"shit, shit, shit." the boy cursed lowly, jumping on a single leg towards the dining table. he was holding his other leg in pain, the wooden floor creaking under his weight.

"and three. 'morning sukuna." your frown disappeared from your face as you gave him a grin.

"'morning, mom. 'morning nana." he kissed you on the cheek before doing the same to your mom.

he plopped down next to her, his grandma pulling him into a side hug. she smiled mischievously, motioning for him to get closer.

whipping her head around to check wether you were looking or not, she sneakily forced a lollipop in sukuna's hand.

"nana, it's 7 in the morning." he deadpanned.

"don't be such a goody-two-shoes now." she scoffed, ruffling his pink hair. "it won't hurt to eat one before dinner just once."

checking on you once again, she slid her hand into the hidden pocket of her bra, getting a couple of bills out.

"nana, i don't want it." his eyes widened, nervously looking at your back.

"come on, i'm no stranger. go and have some fun with your friends after school." she shoved the money in his pocket.

"sukuna. mama. i saw that." you called out, and they both froze.

"she forced me to take it, mom." sukuna whined with his hands up, and you laughed.

"don't worry, 'kuna. it's your first day of high school, so i'll let it slide."

"yeah, our little boy is gettin' all grown up!" your dad smacked your son's back as he entered the small room with choso, your eldest son.

you chuckled at sukuna's stunned face, and soon enough, the tiny kitchen was filled with laughter and joy.

the only thing that got you out of your little heaven was the bangs coming from the wall in front of you.

"what was that, y/n?" your dad asked, standing up.

"it's that old hag next door again." you scowled, taking the broom before hitting the wall too.

"allergic to joy, perhaps?" you yelled at the wall, not backing down.

her tv was always at its maximum volume at night, and it could even be heard from your bedroom, which was the furthest spot from that wall.

but god forbids you prepare some food in the kitchen.

hearing her bangs coming to a stop, you hit the wall once last time before dropping the broom as well.

putting the various dishes that you prepared on the old table, everyone waited patiently until you sat down as well. when you did, you all started digging in, passing the plates around and sharing the delicious food.

"so, is your first day going well so far, boy?" your dad asked, brushing your son's hair out of his face.

"it's okay." he played with his food, acting bored.

"sukuna, our little y/n here used to be just like you. always actin' all high and mighty, but she still licked her plate clean."

"mama!" you lightly slapped your mom's arm, embarrassed. choso observed the scene silently with a soft smile on his face.

"but at the end of the day, your mom had a heart of gold, just like you and choso." she claimed, glancing at you.

"and a crybaby."

"i'm not." you pouted, wiping your face with your sleeve. "i just got something in my eyes, that's all."

"don't tease her too much, darling." your dad came to your defence.

there was a peaceful silence, a silence so comfortable that would be enough to lull sukuna back to sleep.

the silence was broken by none other than the neighbour banging on the wall again, which made your eye twitch.

"don't bother, sweetie. let her do it until she dies." your mom shrugged her shoulders, unbothered.

"think of it in a good way, mom." choso spoke gently, not wanting to upset you even more. " that lady's just like our personal alarm clock."

you laughed, shaking your head at his wise words. "you're right. big things like this only matter so little in the end."

"y/n, i think we're going to be late." your mother poked your shoulder. "it's 7:35 already. he's supposed to be at the gym at 8."

"at the gym?" sukuna scrunched his nose in confusion.

"you haven't read the welcome letter, have you?" your dad pinched his cheek. "new students have to go to the gym to find their new teachers and classmates."

you took your car keys from the counter, hitting the wall one last time out of pettiness.

"everybody in the car. now. woosh, woosh." you ushered.

the kitchen was too small and too packed, so you all had to make a beeline to get out.

rushing to the front of the house, you unlocked the car, warming up the engine.

"sweetie! grab fast and furious!" your mom ordered your dad.

"nana? why are we bringing the ferrets?" sukuna asked, mortified.

"so they can send you off, of course."

"that's a good idea. choso, grab the rooster too."

"yes, ma'am."

"you're doing too much, mom." sukuna plopped in the backseat as he looked outside the window, seeing choso chasing the rooster in the small front yard.

he knew what you were feeling deep inside, and it broke his heart.

"sukuna. i'd do anything for you, and it still won't be enough." you fixed his uniform.

"you're doing enough for me. for all of us. just cause my dad's a deadbeat doesn't mean that you should take on his role too." he mumbled.

"sukuna—" you started, but he cut you off.

"i ain't missing out on anything. my mom alone is worth two dads. you've got more balls than whoever my sperm donor is." he spat, and you chuckled at his words.

he took a deep breath before saying:  "iloveyou."

"hmm? what did you say? can you please say it a bit louder?" you smiled cheekily.

he rolled his eyes, a hint of smile on his face.

"i love you, mom."

"i love you too."

the yelling intensified outside the car, but none of you payed attention to it.

"sukuna, get good grades at school, okay? we're all behind you like a mountain."

"i will, mom."

"don't bully other kids."

"... i'll try."

he could feel your glare burning through his skull.

"alright, i won't."

"and sukuna. emphasis on the grades. you should get a good paying job later. i don't care what your future job will be, but choose a path you enjoy that will also bring you big bucks."

"yeah, mom." he replied, uninterested.

"i'm serious, sukuna." your bottom lip quivered, but you hid it. you had to be strong for your family.

"as much as i hate to say it, money brings happiness."
