Kisses underwater
He stood for a long moment analyzing, and assuming, how beautiful Lily was. He had to force his mouth shut in shock.
The girl's body was not at all like the archetypal skinny models the boys passed around. In that one-piece bathing suit, but with an opening in the middle, James stared at the freckles that ran up her chest.
Lily, to James' eyes, looked healthy, and it drove him crazy; thick thighs, sun-kissed skin, her fluffy red hair falling wildly down her shoulders, her green eyes sparkling. Lily's figure was like that of a pear.
He couldn't help comparing her to the rest of the girls, finding Lily to be the most “perfect”, according to his taste; Marlene was too thin and tall (even taller than Him), Mary was small and rounded, but being Sirius' ex-girlfriend detracted from her, something that also happened with Dominique, Peter's girlfriend.
James discovered that day, that he did not only like girls of medium height, redheads and that, despite being a complex for Lily, to be somewhat overweight.
He saw her frolicking near the shore with Mary and Marlene, and even though Sirius had convinced Lupin to go into the water, he didn't pay them much attention. Instead, and after joking around for a couple of minutes, he approached Lily feeling her legs shaking.
It was the first time he had ever been nervous talking to his own girlfriend.
“Honey, do you feel like coming with me for a while?” Lily turned and looked at her with her deep green eyes, nodding.
They dove in and made their way to the buoy, away from their friends who looked like tiny dots in the field of vision. It seemed that Lupin had gotten too cold because he was already out of the water, and the group had decided to start a childish water war.
When he turned to Lily, she was looking distantly toward the hills.
“Something wrong, beautiful?”
“Nothing, just thinking” she replied, hugging the buoy. James slid down the rope to sit on it. “ I had no idea Sirius and Remus had so many scars.” The girl watched him out of the corner of her eye, but after a moment, she refocused on something more interesting than the scrawny boy.
“I was wondering how… you know…. I guess you do, anyway, don't you?”
James nodded. “It's not my place to tell you, Lily, even if I wanted to.”
“I know, I just wish they trusted me more.”
“They trust you” James clarified, “they're just not ready to reveal everything to the world, you know? Maybe they never will be, and that's okay.”
Lily smiled at him and let go of the buoy, sinking into the water, James felt the girl pull on his ankle and without a second thought, he dove underwater as well.
He couldn't see clearly, due to the water and the fact that he didn't have his glasses on, but when he opened his eyes he could see his girl's red hair fluttering around him, and a few seconds later she wrapped her arms around his neck. As soon as they stepped out to catch their lost air, Lily cast a spell so that around both of their heads a bubble of air was created and forced James to sink back down.
Unable to ask any questions, Lily pressed her lips together with James', who, though he didn't complain, was taken aback. He was the one who always took the initiative.
They were underwater for ten minutes, looking at each other, smiling, kissing, but saying nothing to each other. When they came back out, Lily only murmured:
“At least I know they are happy.” They entwined their hands and returned to the shore, in a gentle swim “How long will our happiness last, James?”
“Until after death, darling. I promise you.”
