Chapter Eight - Mary Macdonald
Mary Macdonald
Since Mary Macdonald was a little girl, the only person to bring her joy, was Lily Evans.
Now Mary is sixteen and still one of the only people to bring her joy is Lily Evans. She’s come to the realization that maybe Lily doesn’t feel the same, she’s been distant recently. And she can feel her pulling away, she can feel the disconnection, it’s like lily doesn’t feel comfortable talking to her.
Marlene telling her she likes Dorcas has made Mary come to the realization of her feelings, she’s felt odd , dating Sirius and all. There wasn’t the same connection she has with her friends, more importantly Lily. that’s the connection Mary wants in a relationship.
Mary is sitting on her bed, painting her nails, and Marlene and Lily are talking.
“Alright , saddest music artist, go” Lily starts, tying her hair up.
“Lou Reed definitely “ Marlene shakes her head
“Lou Reed can’t be the saddest music artist you listen to” Lily replies
“He has a sadness about him” Maleness protests
“True, but he’s not that sad, it’s more mellow, like perfect day,”
“Hey I’ve cried to perfect day “ Marlene argues.
“Of coarse you have” Lily giggles.
“Alright miss mellow, you go”
“Linda Perhacs” Lily answers.
“Who?” Marlene questions
Lily brings a hand to her chest . “Who?! Only the most mellow artist of all time”
“Alright , alright” Marlene laughs at Lilys dramatic reaction. “Name a song maybe it’ll ring a bell”
“Hey, who really cares?”
“Ohh” Marlene says in realization, “ I love that song”
Mary decides to join into the conversation , closing her nail polish, and thinking of what to say.
“Tia Blake” Mary says.
“Huh?” Lily questions .
“Mellow music artist “. Mary pauses “Tia Blake”
“Tia Blake!” Lily smiles, and it’s makes Marys chest flutter.
“Marlene your favorite mellow artist has to be a women” Lily persists ,
“Well of course , Patti Smith” Marlene answers .
Lilys smiles widens “I love patti smith, but she’s not very sad”
“Oh, come on break it up is sad”
“I love break it up” Mary adds .
“Of course you do, break it up, is the best song to ever exist “.

The girls are now all in the common room , Peter and Marlene are playing a game of chess, Lily is talking to Remus , and Mary is sitting by herself on the rug of the common room.
“Mary, do you know that this year is the year of the dragon” says Alice. Making a seat next to mary., looking down to a book on her lap.
“No I did not “ Mary smiles lightly .
“And next year is the year of the snake”
“Cool” Mary answers flatly .
“What’s wrong? love” Alice looks up from her book , directing her eyes to Mary.
“Nothing” Mary whispers softly.
“I don’t think nothing is the answer “ Alice places a warm smile on her face.
“I just feel alone at the moment “ Mary answers
“Breakup with Sirius ?” Alice questions.
“No it’s not that, we’re better of as friends, it’s someone else”
“Someone else” Alice smiles, “do I know them?”
Mary doesn’t even know the answer to this question, who is this someone ? And why does she feel this longing for this person? “I’ve said to much” Mary laughs lightly.
“No no, say more”
“I don’t know who they are”
“What?” Alice furrows her brows
“I like someone but I dont know who it is, I just have the feeling”
“Ohh” Alice nods.
“I’ll let you know when I figure it out”
“Alright” Alice smiles.
“Alright “
“Since it’s the weekend,I’ve heard there's a party tonight,” Alice adds.
“Really?”
“Yep, “

“Party tonight?” Questions Lily
“Mhm, that’s what Alice said” hums Mary , looking through her wardrobe for something to wear. “Where’s Marlene?” Lily asks.
“Still in the common room”
“Oh” Lily pulls out a red sweater from her wardrobe .
“Cmon lily” Mary giggles, “it’s a party”.
“Im well aware” Lily pulls the sweater on over her head. The sweater falls over her stomach and lays perfectly on her torso.
“Then i'll wear a sweater aswell, do you still have that purple one?”
Lily smiles “yeah” she reaches into her wardrobe ain and ulls out a neatly folder, lavender colored sweater.
“Thanks “ Mary reaches to grab it when her hand comes in contact with Lilys. Lily pulls her hand away “youre welcome” Lily mumbles dryly/
Mary feels a stinge at her heart and just ignores it. Mary furrows her brows, “Alright lils?”
“Yeah im alright”
“Okay” Mary puts on the sweater, and the comforting smell of Lily Evans surrounds her.
“The party isnt for another hour so you can just relax” mary adds.
“Right” Lily is now sitting on her bed , her glasses on , struggling to put her hair up.
“Do you need help with that, you dont even have mirror”
“Ill manage”
“Cmon lils” Mary insists.
“Fine” Lily sighs. Lilys distance away from mary recently has just been confusing, lily used to always ask Mary to do her hair. Mary sits on the bed behind Lily to get a good look of her hair.
“Now what kind of style do you want?”
“I dont care”
“Alright” Mary sighs “whats up, youve been so rude lately”
“Nothing is up” Lily says her back still faces Mary.
“Lily , your my bestfriend i know when something is up, did i do something”
“No” Lily sighs, finally turning to face Mary. Lily adusts her glasses and tches her hair behind her ears.
“Are you mad at me?” Mary can feel a weight on her chest as she looks at lily, and her stomach twist up.
“Im not mad at you” lily shakes her head.
What is this feeling?
“How could i ever be mad at you?” Lily laughs wryly.
Mary feels sick, she cant push down this feeling like usual, it just keeps bubbling up. Mary cant form the words together. Lily looks down. Fidgeting her her hands.
“I dont know Mary” Lily mumbles
Don’t know what?, mary’s minds repeats.
Mary can feel her breath get heavier.
“I love you” Lily looks back up.
“I love you too lils” Mary smiles.
As her bestfriend right?
Right.
No.
It doesnt feel that way.
“ Im not upset with you, i just wish-” Lily doesnt finish her sentence.
Oh god.
Mary’s cant comprehend it.
“I love you too” Mary repeats.
“You already said that” Lily laughs again .
“ no i didnt” Mary shakes her head “it was different that time” She takes a deep breath “I love you” Mary pauses “Im in love with you” . Mary has been in love with lily for years, shes just been to blind to realize
“What?” Lily questions
Oh god, no .
Dont tell me she doesnt-
Lily pulls mary into a kiss. Mary feels the weight on her chest disappear. Her lips sink into lilys.
“I love you” Lily says pulling away kiss.
“You said that already” Mary laughs.
“I know” Lily smiles.
Mary pulls her back into a kiss.
