Sign of the Times (Chapter 5)
*Flashback / September 1996*
-Severus View-
Amused, I watched Saorise looking for something again. Well, she hadn't been nicknamed Forget-Me-Not for nothing since our school days.
"Stop laughing Sev!" she hissed angrily and gave me a death stare.
"Do you want me to cry?"
"Should you!" she grumbled quietly to herself, looking desperately at me.
"What are you looking for anyway?", I asked, stifling another laugh as she sighed teastrally and ran a hand through her long black hair.
"A pen, or a pen! Something to write with!" she hissed indignantly.
"I thought you were going to use it to put your hair up," I joked, holding a pen under her nose.
"What did I want to write again?"
"Forget-me-not, there are days when I seriously wonder how you passed university with flying colours? You were going to write Lucius about becoming a father," I replied, shaking my head. Since Saorise was pregnant, she was even more forgetful than before, but one thing had to be said for her. She mastered her profession as a healer in her sleep.
"Oh yes, there was something." she smiled sheepishly.
"Do you happen to have a sheet of parchment hidden somewhere in your robes?" she asked desperately.
"There's a piece of paper next to you." I said with raised eyebrows.
"I probably would have been lost at Hogwarts by now if I didn't have you."
"True enough."
*flashback end*
I woke up and tried to get my bearings. Since today I knew who Saroise was, which is why this dream finally made sense, but there was something else. I had called her Forget-Me-Not. According to the hospital records, I had said that word a few times, but no one could tell me what I meant by it. Maybe Lucius or Andromeda knew more about it. At the moment I was probably the forget-me-not myself. How it bugged me not to know who I once was. I was wide awake and it was pitch black outside, so I guess it was too early to call Lucius and ask what it was all about. Annoyed, I got out of bed and shuffled down the stairs to the kitchen to put on some coffee. My eyes fell on the two pictures Lucius had brought. I hadn't asked Lucius if it was possible that I had a wife or children, but since he hadn't said anything I assumed that wasn't the case. I tore myself away from the picture, filled my coffee and sat down in front of the fireplace to read and quiet my thoughts about the past.
-Andromeda's View-
Lucius and I had been talking until deep in the night, so I was completely overtired, but I had to go to Polperro with Hermione. Edward was the complete opposite of me and made the living room unsafe. Slightly annoyed, I snorted and gave his parents a deprecating look. The sound of my front doorbell was almost a relief to me. Before Remus or Dora could react, I had rushed to the door and opened it.
"Good morning Dromeda. If I didn't know any better, I'd think you'd moved in with Harry," she greeted me with a tentative smile and eyed me anxiously.
"Good morning. Ginny let Harry out on his own?", I asked, slightly amused. What the two of them found in the two youngest Weasley children didn't quite want to enter my head.
"Harry broke up with Ginny. Not a word to either of them. I'll tell you more when we have time," she whispered softly. I nodded curtly and followed Hermione into the living room to get Edward. Less than ten minutes later we had arrived at the edge of the fishing village. Hermione looked around in wonder.
"Where are we?"
"In an Irish Muggle village. He retreated here with his daughter after the battle. Before we enter this cottage, you should know that he has lost a lot. You know him and I can only imagine what you think of him, but for my sake, keep your distance from Senara," I replied quietly. Hermione nodded in understanding and immediately looked even more nervous. Not sure if Luc and the little girl were awake yet, I entered the cottage without ringing the bell. From the living room I heard Lucius counting and had to stifle a grin. Hermione looked at me in confusion, which I ignored for the moment and gestured for her to follow me. The picture was just too cute, both of them had hidden their faces in the sofa and thus took no notice of us.
"Is that..."
"Macaw," Edward mumbled happily.
"Ten! Now who are we looking for Princess?" asked Lucius, lifting Senara up.
"Edy!" she squealed happily, pointing in our direction.
"Dromeda you're already here," came a barely noticeable smile from Lucius. In the corner of my eye I could see Hermione tense up completely. I set Edward down on the floor so that he could join Senara.
"Who are you looking for?" I asked amusedly, shaking my head at the two little ones who had immediately pounced on the toy in the corner.
"You my dear." replied Lucius, casting an appraising glance at the two and then leading the way into the kitchen. I didn't know if Lucius was ignoring Hermione on purpose or if he was waiting for her to wake up from her state of shock.
"Coffee? Or would whiskey be better, Miss Granger?" he asked distantly.
"Coffee will do, thank you, sir," she replied meekly.
"Dromeda you have to see Sev later. He called earlier and asked if anyone could explain to him what he associates with forget-me-nots apart from Saorise," Lucius said quietly, handing us each a coffee cup.
"You're not going to leave me alone, are you?" asked Hermione with an uncertain look at Lucius.
"Miss Granger I had no intention of harming you, or do you really think Andromeda would have brought you here if she assumed I was torturing little Muggle-born witches?"
"No sir, it's just...she..."
"I cannot deny what I have done in the past or who I was. Yet I was acquitted with one or two stipulations. I was last in the magical part of England when my sentence was passed. I am sorry for what happened to you at the Manor, but I cannot change it. I only apologise for what happened to them there," he interrupted Hermione calmly. Hermione couldn't manage more than a nod. Knowing Lucius differently, I had suppressed how most people saw him.
"Dadada!" we heard Senara call from the living room.
"What's Edward up to now?" I asked, laughing softly.
"Senara hasn't had breakfast yet, that's probably why she's calling," Lucius replied, grimacing.
"Why don't we all have breakfast together and then I'll go and see Severus?" I suggested.
"Severus? Dromenda how many people are there with those names?", Hermione asked me quietly, biting her lips.
"There's only one Severus Snape and he doesn't remember who he used to be. Sad, but true," Lucius murmured absently and pressed his plate and cutlery into my hand.
"But he was..."
"Let's have breakfast and then if there's still time, we'll talk about it. This whole thing is harder on Lucius than it is on either of us," I interrupted Hermione quietly, handing her the cutlery. I could see it working in Hermione's head, but I was convinced that Hermione was the best person to handle this task.
"Miss Granger, what are you studying?" asked Lucius as he came back from the living room with the two children by the hand.
"Arithmancy and ancient runes, sir," she replied quietly.
"Well they are smart enough so those two subjects should hardly be a challenge for them. What do they want to do after that?"
"I don't know yet." Lucius just nodded briefly, put Senara in her high chair and took Edward on his lap. Hermione watched the situation with wide eyes.
"Andromeda needs some time to herself, too," Lucius said with a wry smile.
"Remus and Dora have been pretty busy lately," Hermione replied quietly, looking at me appraisingly.
"We take turns, so we each have at least two hours a day to ourselves. After the war, this was worth its weight in gold, but I don't need to explain that to you," I enlightened Hermione. Lucius jumped when the phone rang, he hadn't quite got used to Muggle technology yet, so it amused me a little. I took Edward from him so that he could answer it.
"I'll send Andromeda over in an hour if that's alright?" Hermione looked at me questioningly.
"Severus. Me and Teddy found him yesterday," I replied quietly.
"Andromeda has seen me in worse conditions, don't worry about it." The confusion was evident on both of our faces. Lucius put the phone back and exhaled heavily before rejoining us.
"What happened?", I asked anxiously.
"Everything was fine this morning. He said something about his legs giving way again and he was in pain," Lucius answered dejectedly.
"I should get going right away. Are you two getting along?" I asked uncertainly, looking at Hermione.
"As long as you come back for me," she smirked sheepishly.
"Don't worry. Luc where exactly do I need to go?" Lucius shook his head briefly and then explained in minute detail where Severus lived. He couldn't help warning Hermione then, I suppose. On the other hand, it was probably best to keep it a secret for the time being that Severus was still alive, as long as he didn't know what had happened in his past.
-Hermione's view-
I was hopelessly overwhelmed with everything that had happened in the last hour. First Harry came home drunk as a skunk and announced loudly that no Weasley would ever set foot in Grimauld Place again, before he would give shelter to a Malfoy, and now I was sitting at the breakfast table with Lucius Malfoy, his daughter and Teddy. Maybe I should ask Harry if he can see into the future.
"Umf?" Confused, I looked at the little girl.
"Miss Granger how is the weather outside?"
"Typical Irish. Cloudy, then," I replied irritably, raising an eyebrow questioningly.
"Then it would be better to put on rain gear. Do you want to go to the swamp or do you need a while to get to grips with everything?" I was puzzled by Malfoy's friendly manner towards me, so it took me a moment to hear him reply. I listened attentively as he explained everything about Senara. Teddy immediately shook my hand as we went outside and stomped happily along beside me. Senara suddenly squealed and broke away. Malfoy just shook his head and watched her go, smiling, before settling down on the bench.
"Aren't you afraid that something might happen to her?" I asked, unsure.
"Senara is under a spell that keeps her from going into the swamp. It's a link to her mother, which is why I'm quite happy to come here," he replied, smiling slightly. Teddy looked longingly at Senara and tugged at my hand. Finally I gave in and let go of him. Together they picked some flowers and came back. Malfoy watched what they were doing silently and finally lifted them up. I had to stifle a laugh as Senara tucked the freshly picked flowers into his white-blond hair and smiled contentedly. Malfoy didn't seem to mind much, which frankly surprised me a little.
"Maybe next time we should bring forget-me-nots to help your godfather remember."
"What's the deal with forget-me-nots?", I asked curiously. His gaze darkened abruptly. Once again I cursed myself for being so curious.
"Saorise was a very gifted healer, she only had one flaw, she was very forgetful or scatterbrained you can see that how you want. She went to Slytherin with Severus, besides Lily Potter she was his best friend. Sev gave her the name Forget-Me-Not one day because she was always forgetting something. It's more of a coincidence that forget-me-nots grow in this swamp," he replied quietly, taking the flowers from Teddy's hand and making a wreath, which he put in Senara's hair. Malfoy's affectionate manner towards his daughter fascinated me in a certain way. But one question was burning on my mind, but I was not sure if I could ask it without being cursed in the next moment.
