godmother

"It's time to go home."

"I hope we have everything at home."

Ginny smirked. "Harry, James was born after his due date. We've had everything ready for weeks."

"Aren't you nervous about going home with him? Then we're completely on our own. What if something happens to James?" interjected Harry.

"Now, don't get all worried about it. Nothing will happen to Jamie and we're not alone. My mum will help us anytime. Besides, I can't wait to finally be home, I've been in this bloody hospital far too long," his wife assured him as she walked around the hospital room packing up her things.

Harry furrowed his brows. "And what about you? You've just given birth not even 24 hours ago. You need to rest."

"Are you hiding your secret affair at our house, or why are you trying to stop me from coming home?" asked Ginny with an amused smile on her lips.

"Very funny, Gin."

"Come on Harry. It won't happen anything to James or me. Healer Wilson has given us both the permission to leave the hospital. And I can rest at home too. I know it's a big step, but we can't stay here forever."

It was evening when they finally entered their house. Ginny carried James while Harry carried the bag they had brought with them to the hospital.

"Are you hungry?" asked Harry as he put the bag down in the hallway.

Ginny looked at him with a smirk. "Are you really asking me that right now?"

Harry returned her smile. "What are you in the mood for?"

"Anything that tastes better than the hospital food I've had to eat for the past few days."

Ginny followed her husband into the kitchen where she put James in the bassinet they had put there before he was born. She herself sat down at the table and watched Harry start to cook.

"When was Andromeda going to come over with Teddy?" asked Ginny as James began to cry. She lifted him out of the cot and took him in her arms to nurse him.

Harry turned to her. "Tomorrow morning, before we go to your parents," he replied. "I can't wait to see how Teddy reacts to the little one."

"I hope Teddy doesn't feel pushed away by James."

"What do you mean?"

"Teddy is your godchild, unofficially mine too. Up until now he's been all we've had, all our attention has been on him. The fact that we both have a child now is a huge change for him too. We need to show him that we still love him as much as we did before James was born and that nothing will ever change." Harry was about to say something but Ginny interrupted him. "I know for us it seems obvious, but Teddy is only five, he doesn't necessarily understand that yet."

Harry sighed, "You're right. But I think we prepared him well during your pregnancy. You know how excited he was when we told him we were having a baby."

"I hope you're right."

The next morning, Ginny woke up to a soft whimper. She glanced to her left and had to smile when she saw Harry with James lying on his bare chest.

"Hey," Harry said softly, smiling at her.

She returned his smile. "Good morning."

"Did you sleep well?"

"For having a one day old baby, I slept really well."

Harry laughed softly and then turned his attention to James, who was stretching his little legs away from him and starting to get restless. He opened his eyes, which felt like they were getting browner by the hour, looking more and more like Ginny's. The whimper turned into a cry and James' little mouth opened and closed.

"I don't think I can help you there," Harry said to his son with a grin and lifted him up, placing him between Ginny and himself.

"I guess that's Mummy's job," Ginny replied, turning on her side before pushing up her T-shirt. "Daddy's in charge of full nappies in return."

"That's James."

"Did he name himself like you told me?"

Harry tried to stifle a grin. "Yes, he did."

"Do you want to hold him?" asked Ginny, smiling at Teddy. Hesitantly, he nodded.

Ginny moved slightly behind him on the sofa and placed James in Teddy's arms without letting go of James' little head. Teddy held still and said nothing, just watched the baby in his and Ginny's arms. The adults around him watched him spellbound.

"So, what do you say?" asked Harry, who was sitting to Teddy's right, after a while.

"He's small. Was I once that small too?" asked Teddy, looking questioningly at his godfather.

The latter nodded. "Yes, you were. But that was a little while ago."

"Is he going to stay with you all the time now?"

Harry hesitated, but then nodded. "James is our son and he will be a part of Ginny's and my lives forever from now on. Just as you."

"Am I still your godson?" asked Teddy patiently, looking at Harry with big amber eyes that reminded him so much of Remus.

This question made Harry's heart break a little.

"Of course you're still my godson!" replied Harry immediately. "I love you just as much as I love James. And just like him, you're like a son to me. I would call you my son, but I don't want you to forget who your parents are and what great people they were. What I do want you to know, though, is that you are always welcome here. No matter what."

The little boy nodded slowly and then turned to Ginny. "I know that only Harry is my godfather, but can you be my godmother?"

Ginny's eyes widened slightly. She could feel tears in the corners of her eyes. "You want me to be your godmother?" she asked hesitantly.

"Yes. You are always there for me and give the best hugs," Teddy replied directly. "I'm sorry Grandma," he added, turning to Andromeda, which made her smile.

Ginny now had tears running openly down her cheeks.

"Did I do something wrong?" the five year old asked, puzzled.

"No, you didn't Teddy," his grandma assured him.

Harry smiled and gently took James out of Teddy's arms as he became restless. "Ginny only had a baby the day before yesterday and you're always a bit emotional after that. Besides, those are happy tears."

Ginny nodded in confirmation. "I love you so much, Teddy-Bear," she said sniffling and hugging him to her chest. "And of course I want to be your godmother!"
