Our Darling Baby
"So, what should we call our daughter?" Sirius asked absentmindedly as he swung his legs back and forth from his place on the counter.
"Who says that it's a girl? For all we know, we could be having a baby boy," Lily remarked with a raised eyebrow.
"It's a feeling. James, tell her. I know you feel it too," Sirius tried to get his husband to back him up to no avail. He was clearly staying impartial, though he was also struggling to contain his laughter. Lily and Sirius rolled their eyes fondly at James before he continued, "I don't know how you don't feel it. Your magical aura isn't masculine at all."
Lily scoffed in exasperation, "Oh please! That's not a real thing. You can't know a baby's gender based off 'magical auras'. That's a stretch, even for magic."
James and Sirius shared a look before James stated softly, "Love, it is. Wizarding families have been sensing their baby's gender for years. Why do you think we don't have gender reveals? It's because the family can sense it."
"Then why can't I?" Lily wondered before biting her lip anxiously.
Sirius tilted his head in consideration, "Maybe you can but you don't realise it because you were muggle-raised. We learnt it as kids because other people can sense the aura when the family share the news. Don't worry though, Lils. It's easy enough to learn."
"So, what should we name our daughter?" she questioned wryly.
"Are there any family traditions you want to follow?" James offered curiously.
Lily hummed, "my mother's side of the family name the girls after flowers but my great grandma had a flower in her middle name instead of her first name so we don't have to have it for the first name.
"That's cool," Sirius smiled, even though he already knew about the tradition. "My family names the kids after stars, though I'm not sure if I want to curse her with Black family traditions."
"That's a beautiful tradition though. Naming our daughter after a star," she trailed off with a warm smile.
"She's certainly going to be the brightest thing in our life," James chuckled.
"What about you Jamie? Do you have any family traditions that you want to include?" Sirius pondered.
James thought about it for a few moments before responding, "I'd like to give her the middle name Euphemia, if that's okay with you two."
Sirius and Lily shared a look of fond exasperation. Lily responded, "of course we wouldn't mind. Euphemia would be a lovely middle name."
Suddenly, Sirius was struck by a thought," we should give her the middle name 'Rose'."
James nodded in agreement, "that's smart, Star. That way, our little girl is named after a flower and she has her other grandmother's name."
Lily beamed at them before bringing up their next problem. "That's great but we still don't have a first name or a surname."
"We should definitely call her Potter or Evans. I wouldn't want her to be burdened with the Black name," Sirius put forth adamantly.
"Are you sure, Siri? Despite your family being the evil bitches that they are, maybe this can be your way to create change. You might be disowned but having another half-blood in the family is guaranteed to piss them off. Plus, our daughter carrying the Black family name (but being better than them) creates a statement that you disagree with their bullshit."
Sirius cackled, "You, Lily Evans-Potter-Black, are evil. I don't think I've ever been more in love."
Lily just winked in return.
"Still, 'something Euphemia Rose Evans-Potter-Black' is a mouthful. Especially if Sirius wants to give a middle name as well," James considered thoughtfully.
Sirius giggled, "Imagine having to call her name when she gets in trouble." He was rewarded with two laughs in return.
"Don't remind me. I'm having the child of two Marauders and she's going to be raised by two of them full-time and another two part-time. She's going to be the reason Professor McGonagall retires, I know it," Lily sighed dramatically.
James and Sirius grinned at each other before James spoke up again, "just out of curiosity, what would you name our baby if we were having a son?"
Sirius considered this before admitting, "I'd probably want to name him after Remus or Peter, for obvious reasons...or Reggie...I know it's stupid because he's a Death Eater now but it wouldn't feel like I was naming him after the 18 year old Voldemort follower. If anything, I'd be naming him after my baby brother who was just a sweet, caring little boy." He sighed and clutched his arms self-consciously. He didn't want to look at their reactions because he feared what they would be.
"Siri, that's a lovely idea. What about you, James?"
"Hmm, I'd probably name him Harry after your grandfather. It's a nice name and you seemed to be really close with him. He sounded like a good man and I'd have loved for our kid to be named after him. Besides, can you imagine calling our child Fleamont?" he shook his head with mirth. "The poor child."
Lily's eyes teared up and she embraced James in a hug. "I love you so much."
"I feel selfish now," Sirius admitted sheepishly.
Lily ran her hands through his hair, "don't be. I loved your suggestions. Naming our child after close friends or your little brother is a the kind of thing that made me fall in love with you. What about now that she's a girl though? Should we name her after one of the girls?"
"Nah," Sirius brushed off. "Marlene and Dorcas will probably have kids of their own so it would be nice for them to have the option. It would be the same with Mary. Alice and Frank will probably use Alice as a middle name for any daughters they have."
Lily raised an eyebrow, "And Remus and Peter wouldn't name their kids after themselves?"
James snorted, "I doubt Remus would name a kid after himself. His confidence is non-existent. Peter doesn't want any kids and he probably wouldn't give them his name."
"Yeah, that makes sense," she agreed. "So, Remus, Peter, Regulus and Harry. Are there any feminine versions?"
"Peta with an A instead of ER, Petra, Rena, Reggie, Regina, Harper, Hannah, Hallie, Ha-" Lily cut James off abruptly.
"I really like the name Hallie. What do you think?"
Hallie Euphemia Rose Evans-Potter-Black or Hallie Rose Euphemia Evans-Potter-Black. Both were perfect names.
"I love it," James verbally agreed while Sirius nodded with a smile.
"Our baby Hallie."
Obviously, it was a shock to them all but especially the boys when they were presented with a boy.
Clearly, magic isn't always accurate.
Or is it?
