Chapter 1
Ginny needed to talk to Percy.
Ever since she was small, Percy was the one she could talk to. The one who'd listen to her, take her seriously and help her find a solution. Of course, much to her dismay, after Percy got disowned, they didn't talk as much. Sure after the war all had been forgiven, but it hadn't quite returned to it's previous dynamic.
Once a month the Weasleys had a dinner. With all the family and their partners and their kids. But last night, as all was going normal, Percy had looked down at his phone and said in al alarmed voice that he'd need to go. No one reacted, the talking and laughing continuing. But Mum had heard and given a curt nod, signalling him to leave.
No one had noticed, no one commented.
But it was toying on her mind, just worried intuition, so she'd decided to text him and ask. But as she searched her phone Ginny realised. She didn't have his number. She'd never had his number, Ginny assumed he didn't have a phone to be honest. So she scrolled through an old group chat to see where Percy lived. She only hoped he hadn't moved since.
So that was what lead to Ginny stood on Percy's drive hesitant to knock on the door. On google maps, the house was a group of flats. Looking in front of her, it was very obviously not a group of flats. But at closer inspection, the images were from years ago. She gathered up enough courage and walked up to the door.
A few moments after ringing the bell, there came the metallic sound of the door unlocking.
There was a girl stood in the doorway. She seemed about sixteen with long brown hair and a summer dress. Green eyes looked at her expectantly, her eyebrow raised.
"Oh erm, sorry but does Percy Weasley live here?"
The girl looked at her with an odd expression, Ginny expected the shake of her head or slam of the door, but instead she spoke.
"Yep, whaddya need?"
Ginny was surprised. Why was this girl at Percy's house?
"Um I just need to talk to him, for er personal reasons."
The girl looked her up and down before thinking for a second and nodding.
"Do you mind just waiting her for like two seconds while I call him and check?"
"Sure."
She was once again shocked when the girl pulled out her phone and called him, leaving her standing outside. Sure. Why not?
The girl was on the phone for a while, murmuring something she couldn't quite understand. After a while she hung up and looked back at her.
"Okay, he'll be home in like twenty mins. Do you want to come in and wait?"
"Yeah sure"
The house was really nice. Cosy and warm. It was odd how much the place made her relax. Large soft sofas sat around a tv, a wooden coffee table in front of it. Paintings of landscapes and woodlands lined the walls, along with maps and the occasional photo. The photos of the girl, a younger boy and a small toddler hung on the walls in front of monuments and mountains, laughing and smiling. And they looked like, well, a family.
Maybe she was in the wrong Percy Weasley's house.
"Do you want some tea?"
She nodded and followed her into the kitchen.
The girl busied herself with the kettle and mugs. "So, your his brother eh?"
"Yeah, I'm Ginny Weasley"
She smiled for the first time since she'd opened the door. "I'm Kayla Woods"
Ginny recognised the name, "Wait are you Oliver Woods kid?"
Kayla grinned. "Yep that's my Da"
"I hope you don't mind me asking but if Woods is your dad, why are you in Percy's house?"
Kayla looked at Ginny with an undecipherable expression before a wave of realisation seemed to wash over her.
"Don't really think it's my place to say, but you can ask him you want. Should be here in a couple of minutes."
She handed her a cup of tea before sipping on her own.
Ginny felt a need to talk, even if her mind was currently asking so many questions.
"So do you go to Hogwarts?"
Kayla smiled, "Yep, going into seventh year. I'm the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain at the moment."
Ginny thought for a second, wasn't Bill's kid in third year?
They could hear the front door click open and Percy yell out "I'm home."
He walked into the kitchen. He smiled at Ginny with an element of panic in his eyes before turning to to her left.
Percy looked at Kayla and gestured to the living room. She playfully rolled her eyes and left the room.
He looked at his shoes like he always did when he felt awkward.
"What's going on?" Ginny said with an exasperate honesty.
"What do you want to know?"
She took a breathe, "I want to know if this is your house, I want to know why a sixteen-year-old answered the door, I want to know why Oliver Wood's kid is in your house, I want to know who the kids in these photos are, I want to know if your okay and most importantly I'm worried about how little you've talked to anyone at home since the war."
He paused, his eyebrows raised.
"I can tell you the majority of that."
"Go ahead."
"Yes, this is my house. A sixteen-year-old answered the door because, well she's my daughter-"
"...What!?"
"Just let me finish yeah?" She nodded, "Oliver Wood's kid in my house because, um she's our daughter."
Ginny's mouth hung open.
"Those kids in those photos are my kids, yes I am okay"
She couldn't think of where to start. "Wait so how come your thirty one and she's sixteen? That doesn't work out"
He rolled his eyes, "It's called adoption Ginny"
"And wait so you and Oliver..."
Percy smiled, "Yep, me and Oliver"
"Since when?!"
"Well, dating since fifth year. We married in 1999."
Ginny couldn't help but stare, "But, that was so long ago! Why didn't you tell us?"
He sighed, "I was going to, I really was. It's just Mum isn't exactly... accepting. And I know that Mum is someone who wouldn't hesitate to cut you out if your not doing what she thinks you should be. When we adopted Kayla we decided not to tell anyone indefinitely."
She felt herself start to tear up, "But why didn't you tell us? Why didn't you tell me?!"
"Ginny, for them to be in your life, they would've had to be in her life, and I didn't think that was the best for them."
"B-but how could you hide this much?"
"I'm sorry Ginny, I really am."
He looked outside, "Listen, its getting late. We have a spare bedroom if you want to stay the night."
She thought for a second, there was no one waiting for her in her flat. Her and Harry had broken up years ago. Ginny was just too scared to tell her Mum, the idea of explaining why they hadn't worked made her cringe. Maybe she did understand Percy's decision on some level.
"If your sure"
He smiled, a smile she hadn't seen in a very long time. "I'm sure."
