Chapter 1

September 1st, 1971

Dear diary,

Today I am starting my first year at Hogwarts. My mum told me to start a diary so that I could look back on it and reminis reminisce when I’m all old and wrinkly, but I think I’m just going to throw it out soon.

At the station, my mum gave me a massive kiss on my cheek, and it was soooo embarrassing, 3 boys laughed at me, all of them were in different groups. One of them had circular glasses, another had black hair and a smaller boy next to him and the final boy had a long nose and long, greasy hair. What a way to start my first year.

When I got on the train, a lanky boy called Remus asked if he could sit with me and I obviously said yes. He didn’t really talk much though, just read and glanced up at me and Wolfie, my cat, every so often. Every time he did, I smiled slightly and about 2 hours in he smiled at me back!! I was so happy.

When we got to Hogwarts, we had to go on these little boat things with a really tall guy called Hagrid who told us that Hogwarts was the safest place within the wizarding community and that it’s the happiest place on earth or something. We all go guided to the great hall by an old lady called McGonagall who seemed nice enough and she told us that she’d call our names one by one so we could be sorted into our respectable houses. My name was called after a boy called Kingsley Shackle bolt who was sorted into Gryffindor and smiled widely as he walked over to the table. At least some people were happy about their houses because one boy before me called Sirius Black looked over at the Slytherin table after being sorted into Gryffindor and I saw his eyes well up with tears and a pretty, brunette girl gave him a smile and a thumbs up, she must have been a 7th year. When I sat down, the hat took forever to choose my house before deciding on Gryffindor. I walked over to a spare seat next to Remus and he smiled at me again. Hogwarts might not be too bad.

The head boy took us to our bedrooms, and I shared one with Remus, the Kingsley boy who had been sorted before me, the Sirius boy who looked mortified to be here and a boy called James who was holding Sirius’ arm, I’m not sure why he was but Sirius looked like he needed a hug and I felt bad for him. I wonder why he was so sad.

Now, I’m sat on my bed, the closest one to the door and everyone is doing their own thing, except Sirius who is crying with James’ arms wrapped around him.

I just asked why Sirius was so sad and apparently his mum will be angry about him being in Gryffindor but that can’t be that bad right? It’s almost time for bed now but I might keep writing in here, it’s more fun than it looks!

Yours sincerely,

                           Peter Pettigrew.
