chapter four

James Potter prided himself in the fact that he has never, ever hated any of his best friends.

Up until now, at least.

James found himself sitting alone in the listening party. He had no clue when he had been abandoned by his friends. In fact, it was only after the album stopped playing when he looked up and realized none of his friends were around.

He took his phone out, figuring that texting would be the easiest way to find them in a crowded space.

prongs: where did u guys go
Im scared i dont know anyone here
SOS ARE U GUYS THERE
im texting my mom to pick me up

Giving up, James started walking around in order to look for them, and quickly found where they had gone and why they weren't replying to his texts.

He saw Sirius talking to Remus, which was a sight he hadn't seen in months, but he was glad they had made up. Despite his loyalties remaining with Sirius throughout their breakup, James had to admit he missed Remus like crazy.

Of course, Dorcas and Marlene were laughing over something said by Peter in the corner of the room. James had no clue how Peter got into conversation with the two, but he assumed Peter was playing matchmaker with Marlene and Dorcas. The pair did look good together, so he couldn't blame Peter for trying to set them go.

James' last hope was Lily, but she too busy to entertain him and James knew better than to interrupt Lily when she was deep in conversation. Lily was talking to Mary and Pandora, or at least that's what James thought her name was. He slightly remembered Pandora, but that was only because she was best friends with Sirius' sister who hadn't spoken to Sirius since Sirius ran away at sixteen, which would have made his sister fifteen James was shocked that it had almost been seven years with no contact.

Reggie, who hated being called her full name for a reason unknown by James, had been a year younger than Sirius and James. She strayed away from Sirius and his friends, including James, as she found them annoying and she definitely wasn't afraid to tell them.

James was walking with Sirius on as the two made their way back to their dorm rooms from afternoon classes. James and Sirius were fifteen year old at the time and it was merely days before end of term at their boarding school. Everyone in the corridor was antsy, especially Sirius.

"I'm so excited to get out of here you don't even understand," Sirius said while searching through the crowd for someone.

Both Sirius and Remus were staying a majority of summer holiday with James and it was all Sirius had been talking about for the past month.

Before Sirius could start rambling on about the summer, he seemed to find who he was looking for in the crowd and suddenly sped up in order to reach them. James, who was very confused, followed Sirius. He saw the back of Reggie Black's head, who was walking with Evan and Pandora Rosier, and he immediately knew where this was going. James barely opened his mouth before Sirius reached Reggie and grabbed a piece of her hair from the back, and proceeded to yank it.

"What the hell?" She said as she looked back to see who had pulled her hair. She saw Sirius grinning back and her and shoved him.

"What's up? I just wanted to say hi, couldn't get your attention any other way," Sirius shrugged while side eyeing James to try and get some backup. James nodded in agreement, just trying to make it back to his dorm in one piece.

"I'm sure," Reg replied, her tone getting more angry by the second. "You must think you're a comedian since all of your idiot friends don't have the heart to tell you that all of your stupid pranks aren't funny. Honestly, I'm not surprised that your little lap dog is just silently agreeing with." She said, before turning around and storming off with her friends close behind.

Sirius was baffled, not expecting his sister to blow up. James, who was also in shock, looked at Sirius, then Reggie, who was turning into her dorm.

James and Sirius were both quiet on the way back to their dorm.

Even after he knew Reggie's very bold opinion of him, James had a small, almost silly, crush on her. He knew she was off-limits because Sirius would throw a fit. So as a good friend would, James kept his crush a secret. Well, a secret from everyone except Remus. Remus always picked up on how James seemed to look for her in the Great Hall during meals. After Remus confronted him about it, James once told Remus about his little crush. Remus was surprisingly extremely supportive of it. Regardless of the support, James would never betray Sirius, that was certain.

James had been so lost in thought that while walking, he bumped into someone facing the bar and almost fell to the ground.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry," James blurted out to the stranger, extremely embarrassed. The stranger turned around and let out a laugh that sounded like a symphony to James.

James came face to face with the person he had bumped into, who seemed to be a real life angel. The stranger had short, curly brown hair and was only slightly shorter than James. He felt his jaw hit the floor.

Holy shit, he's gorgeous. James thought to himself.

"What?" The stranger said, an amused look on his face. James covered his mouth, realizing he had in fact said that out loud.

"I didn't mean- Well, I did, but that's not the point-" James was scrambling for words when the stranger let out a laugh again. James rubbed his hands over his face and took a deep breath, trying to calm down.

"I'm sorry for saying that, I didn't mean to say it out loud. I don't think I know you, I'm James Potter," He said with a weak smile.

"It's fine, I appreciate the compliment. I'm Regulus Black, I'm the guitarist in Lovefools." Regulus replied returning the small smile to be courteous.

"You have the same last name as my best friend, Sirius, that's kinda weird," James laughed softly at his own comment.

"Oh," Regulus mumbled. His face seemed to fall at the mention of Sirius. James noticed, but decided not to bring it up despite his curiosity.

"So uh, you play guitar?" James asked. Regulus nodded, the slight frown still on his face.

"Nice, I play guitar for the 1971. The guitar in the background of the album sounded amazing! I mean, at some parts, it was all I was focused on. Some of the riffs were absolutely insane, I was basically mesmerized-" James cut himself off after realizing he was rambling. Regulus raised an eyebrow.

"Wow, thank you. Not many people have said that, since they're all too focused on the lyrics. I really don't know what to say," Regulus responded. He seemed to be taken aback by James' rant.

"No problem. I'd love to see you in action," James paused. Regulus raised an eyebrow at this statement. "With your guitar, I mean, sorry. Maybe we could get together and play sometime? " James gave him a small smile.

"Maybe," Regulus just shrugged. James blinked, not used to just getting brushed off so easily.

"Does that mean you'll think about it?" James asked shortly after.

"Possibly." Regulus said curtly. James grinned. The answer wasn't a no, so he would take that.

"Since you still have to think about it, can I give you my number so you're able to give me a solid answer once you decide?" James questioned his a smug look on his face. Regulus' eyes widened, not sure how to react to what he asked.

"I mean, if you insist." Regulus replied after pausing for a few seconds. He then pulled out his phone and opened his contacts in order to create a new one. Regulus handed James the phone once creating a new profile. James typed in his number and set the contact name with a small smirk on his face. After he was done typing in the information, he handed the phone back to Regulus. Regulus took his phone back and read the contact information, a small grin appearing on his face.

"Future husband James Potter? Don't you think that's little bit forward of you? You barely know me." Regulus looked up at James.

"I plan to get to know you, don't worry." James said with a wink. Regulus was silent, just staring at James. They kept eye contact until someone called out Regulus' name. The pair turned to look to see who had said his name and saw Remus standing with the rest of the Lovefools members. The group seemed to be waiting for Regulus in order to leave.

"Well, this is where I take my exit," Regulus said while he gathered his things. He started walking off but paused, not too far from where James stood, and turned to look back at him. "I'll keep in touch, future husband," Regulus said with a smile before walking to Remus.

James stood in the spot where Regulus left him, in awe. He wasn't sure how much time passed before Sirius and the rest of the 1971 walked up to him. Sirius was looking at him with concern on his face.

"Prongs? Are you okay, buddy?" Sirius questioned while waving a hand in front of James' face, trying to pull him out of whatever trance he was in.

"Oh, he's gone," Lily added, laughing, as she took a picture of James standing there in shock.

"This is what we get for leaving him alone, now he seems to be traumatized," Peter said, snapping his fingers near James' face to get him to react.

"We need to get him out of here before they lock us up with his crazy ass," Marlene remarked.

James shook his head, seemingly shaking himself from whatever trance he was in. He looked at the group and smiled widely.

"Guys, you're never gonna believe it. I just met my future husband." James said with enthusiasm.

All of his friends burst out in laughter in front of him.

"Jesus Christ, he's gone mad," Marlene managed to get out while she giggled.

"I'm serious!" James exclaimed with a huff.

"No, I'm Sirius-" Sirius was cut off by James elbowing him. "What? I had to." Sirius said before laughing again.

"That's what you said when you saw me for the first time and look where that got you. I wouldn't be so sure if I were you," Lily mentioned after laughter fit had stopped.

"No, I'm sure this time. You just have to trust me." James grumbled as he crossed his arms.

Peter patted him on the back. "There, there. I believe you."

"Thank you Peter." James beamed.

"Alright loverboy, sorry to interrupt this moment, but the doorman might physically throw us out if we don't leave as soon as possible," Marlene said, motioning over to a very unamused doorman who was staring at them.

The group gathered themselves enough to leave without breaking down in laughter from tonight's events. James shot the doorman a sympathetic look on his way out, but it was rightfully ignored.

Once they were out on the street, they started making their way home. The group began recalling their nights on their walk. Sirius began talking about Remus to James, who had endured many of Sirius's ramblings about Remus. He saw Marlene start gushing over Dorcas to Lily and then Lily began talking about her mystery crush, or crushes. James wasn't sure which one it was, as he couldn't hear very well while Sirius was ranting about Remus next to him.

Despite the details, James found himself going over all of the events from the night. He decided that he actually did not hate his best friends for abandoning him during the event, as it led him to meeting Regulus.

James pulled himself from his thought and realized the group had made it to James' apartment building.

"This is me. I'll see you guys at the album party!"James said his goodbyes to his friends and entered his apartment.

Later that night, James went to sleep with a certain guitarist on his mind.
