TWO weeks. Your wedding was only two weeks away. Many last-minute preparations were being made. Turns out Madam Rosmerta has never been asked to host a wedding ceremony at the Three Broomsticks. She was owling you almost every day with questions and concerns. While you did appreciate the effort she was putting in, it was getting quite annoying. You sent her a friendly howler to tell her that she did not need to worry about anything. It wasn’t her wedding after all.
“Do you think that was too much?” you asked as you sent off the howler with her owl.
Sirius smiled as he kissed your cheek, “I think it was just enough.”
Remus has watched the exchange between you and Sirius. Lately, he’s been feeling really insecure. The full moon could get him in a depressed mood so he didn’t think much of it. The problem was that the full moon was two weeks ago and his mood has not improved whatsoever. He tried to spend more time with you and Sirius but that would get him even more depressed.
At night when you and Sirius were fast asleep, he would silently slip out of the bed and go downstairs into the sitting room. He would just sit and stare at a wall while his mind swam with a lot of hypothetical situations. The same ‘what if?’ questions would run through his brain. What if? What if? What if? What if? What if they don’t love me anymore?
Of course, they don’t love you anymore. You’re a werewolf, a beast. You could barely provide for yourself let alone two partners. Who would love you? The devil on his shoulder would whisper that into his ear. Remus believed it. You two deserved better than him.
You noticed that Remus had been acting differently lately. He was quieter and timider. He would spend his days hiding away doing Merlin knows what. You weren’t the only one who noticed it. Sirius had noticed something wrong with Remus.
“Do you think we should talk to him,” you whispered into Sirius’s ear. You hugged him to mask the fact that you were whispering into his ear.
Sirius wordlessly nodded his head. Sirius sat down on the couch across from Remus. You followed suit and sat next to Sirius. As soon as you and Sirius sat down, Remus stood up and went to walk out of the room.
“Remus, wait,” you stood up. Remus stopped in his track and slowly turned around with an eyebrow slightly raised. “We wanted to talk with you,” you slowly sat back down.
Oh, Merlin, they’re going to tell me they don’t want me anymore. They’re going to say they don’t want to marry me anymore. What am I going to do? Where am I going to live? Is this the end? Remus’s mind raced with question after question and assumption after assumption. He really thought that this was the end. His poor little heart was racing. He didn’t want to lose you two even if he didn’t think he deserved you two.
“Okay,” Remus sat down on one of the armchairs across from the couch. He tapped his foot on the floor while he nervously played with his hands. He just couldn’t allow himself to sit still.
“We’ve noticed that you’ve been acting strange lately. Is everything alright? If something is wrong you need to tell us,” Sirius begged Remus for a chance to get to know what was happening. The two of you never wanted Remus to feel unhappy or unwanted.
“It’s nothing really,” Remus shook his head, “It’s stupid. I’m sorry.” Remus stood up once again.
“Sit, Remus. We really need to know what’s wrong. We’re getting married in two weeks and if we want this marriage to work we’re going to have to talk,” you snapped. That might have been a bit harsh but it was the truth. After almost twenty years of dating, you were so close to getting the fairytale wedding you’ve always wanted. You weren’t going to allow some awful communication to get in the way of your wedding. But to be clear, the health of your relationship was far more important than exchanging empty vows.
“Fine,” Remus sighed, “if you really want to know why I’ve been acting strange lately is because I’m jealous okay.” You and Sirius looked at each other with worry in your eyes. You didn’t know that Remus was jealous. This is why communicating is vital in any relationship.
“Why are you jealous?” Your eyebrows knit in confusion. You spent just as much time with Remus as you did with Sirius, maybe even more.
Remus leaned back in the armchair, “Because I feel like you two deserve each other. I feel like I’m getting in the way of things.”
Your heart dropped. You got up from the couch and walked over to Remus’s side. You got down on both of your knees and grabbed his hands. You looked up at Remus, “Why didn’t you tell us earlier?”
“Because you two looked so happy. I didn’t want to get in the way of things.”
“Remus, you’re just as much a part of this relationship as the both of us. Without you, we wouldn’t have known anything about polyamory,” Sirius sat down on the arm of the armchair Remus was sitting on.
You nodded your head along with every word Sirius said, “you’re the glue that holds us together, Remus.”
For the first time in what seemed like forever, Remus cracked a small smile. “I’m sorry. It was stupid to think that you two didn’t love me.”
“No, no, no. Your feelings are never stupid,” you shook your head. You wanted your partners to know that they could talk to you whenever they needed. You hoped that you could do the same.
“Thank you for trusting us with your feelings,” you kissed the back of Remus’s hand.
Sirius brushed a few strands of Remus’s hair away from his face, “feeling better?”
“Now,” you hopped up from the floor, “about the cake situation.” Edith Edens had owled you many samples of wedding cakes. You preferred the vanilla cake with strawberry filling. It was simple and most people liked it but you knew Remus and Sirius preferred chocolate cake.
“Since when was there a cake situation?”
“Since now,” you put your hands on your hips and cocked your head to the side while a devious smile played on your lips.
Remus smirked and placed his finger over your lips, shushing you. “Can this wait? I finally feel a bit better and all I want to do right now is cuddle with my wife and husband.”
“We’re not married yet,” Sirius remarked. The three of you have been calling each other ‘wife’ and ‘husband’ for the past two months. It was cute and you loved it. Your stomach would explode with butterflies every time.
If someone had told you twenty years ago that you would be marrying someone after dating for twenty years you would have laughed in their faces. You really weren’t one for commitment. But these past twenty years have allowed you to see each other for who you really were. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
