Chapter 35

“Ma’am, I’m a father too.” He said, knowing that little bit of information hadn’t been made public yet, but that it would soon enough as there were so many people now who knew the truth. “My daughter was the other girl kidnapped by the villains, so I understand how you feel better than you might think. I wish I could simply promise to lay down my very life to protect your son, but the truth is I wouldn’t be doing a good job as a father if I did. But I can promise you this: I will do everything within my hands to educate and help Izuku became a great hero and the next Symbol of Peace.”

Inko Midoriya looked at the man prostrated humbly before her and shook her head.

“You are Izuku’s reason to live… I don’t hate UA, but it worries me that he has such a single-minded desire and… if you die, he’ll be devastated, as I know your daughter would be too. So please, for them, just do your best to live a good live and guide them down the right path.”

And with that, Inko Midoriya accepted the man’s promise of helping her only child through the path he had chosen. And Toshinori accepted that he would have to find a way to live on to keep that promise.

Yumi smiled as she went down the stairs from her room. She had received calls from all her friends after celebrating Shinso’s birthday, the purple-haired boy letting them know that they could call her now.

Apparently, her friends had been stupidly worried that she’d blame them for not being able to save her.

They were a bunch of idiots, but they were her idiots.

The doorbell ringing shook her out of her thoughts and she paused in the middle of the stairs, staring at the door.

It couldn’t be her father; he wouldn’t need to call and he was busy with Aizawa-sensei visiting her classmate’s families in order to get their permission for them to go back to class and the dormitory system for UA approved.

Shinso was at his house waiting for that very same visit and both Uncle Tsukauchi and grandpa had keys to the house.

She couldn’t think of anyone else who knew where they lived.

Curious and a bit wary, she opened the door.

She was surprised at the sight before her. Hawks, dressed in out-of-duty clothes, stood in front of her house. He wore a pair of black pants and a red shirt along with a red leather jacket. His big red wings flexed on his back in a way that she had learnt meant he wasn’t very comfortable, despite looking anything but uncomfortable. In front of her house there was a black and yellow motorbike that he’d presumably come in, going by the helmet he held under his arm.

“Hi. I was passing by and thought I could drop by for a quick visit.”

Yumi blinked at him.

“How did you know where I live?”

The young man smirked slightly at her and raised his eyebrows.

“Well, I have contacts. But don’t worry, the information is well-hidden, so I guess it’ll be a while before that leaks out to the public.”

Yumi shrugged and invited him in. She prepared tea and took out a jar with biscuits she’d prepared the day before to share.

“Delicious.” Muttered the man taking a bite out of one.

“What brings you here?” she asked politely.

“My, anyone would think you’re not happy to see me.”

Yumi blushed a bit.

“That’s not what I mean, Keigo. Of course I’m happy to see you.”

“Are you?” asked the man with a strange intensity in his piercing golden eyes.

Yumi nodded and he studied her carefully for a few seconds before smiling.

“Well, I was wondering if you wanted to come fly in a few days. I’m free on Monday.”

“Classes start up again that day.”

“After classes then?”

Yumi thought about it.

“It should be fine as long as I’m back before the curfew. UA is implementing a new dormitory system.” She confided.

Hawks hummed.

“Well, that sounds doable. I’ll pick you up after classes then.”

“Is that all you came here for?” she asked reaching out a hand for a cookie. “You could have called.”

“I wanted to see you.” Said simply the young man.

“Oh.” Was all she could think to reply as she, for some reason, blushed.

“You look fetching when you blush, little bird.”

Her blush only grew, spreading down to her neck. She coughed.

“I still haven’t thanked you for saving me, back then…”

The man waved a hand dismissively.

“There’s no need to thank me for that. I was glad to be of help. In truth all the hard work was done by… well, your father.”

He had a peculiar face as he said that last bit, but Yumi couldn’t really decipher what it meant. Then Keigo drank the last of his tea and stood up, with her following suit.

“Unfortunately, as much as I enjoy your company, I have to go. I’m supposed to patrol in less than an hour.”

She walked him to the door and opened it for him, but just as they were saying their goodbyes, her father appeared.

“I just finished visiting the Midoriya family.” He said before turning his attention to the young man next to his daughter. “Hawks-kun, it’s a pleasure to see you again. I have to thank you for protecting my daughter.”

“As I was telling Yumi, sir, it’s nothing to thank me for…”

“Of course it is, Yumi is my precious daughter, there’s nothing I’d be more grateful for than someone protecting her.”

“Then you’re welcome, sir.”

“And please, you may call me Toshinori. No need to be so formal.”

“Alright… Toshinori-sama.”

There was a moment of silence and then…

“Is there anything else you needed, Hawks?”

The young man looked between the older man and his daughter before shaking his head.

“No, sir. I’ll see you on Monday, then?”

“Yes, Monday, Keigo.”

Yumi nodded and the young man flashed a smile before turning around and getting on the motorbike. She waved at him, ignorant to her father’s eyes fixed on her smiling face.

Toshinori watched from the door as his daughter picked up things from around her room. In truth, the only reason he was comfortable with her moving out of home and into the UA dormitories was that he’d be moving into the UA terrains too, even if they wouldn’t be in the same building, with there being one for teachers alone.

“Aren’t you bringing this?” he asked as he walked in and picked up an action figure from the shelf.

His daughter looked at what he was holding and blushed.

“Daddy, I…”

“What? Are you suddenly too old for action figures?”

“It’s not that, just… what if he sees it? I don’t want to seem like a crazy fan…”

Toshinori snorted.

“You should see Izuku’s room, then. That’s crazy fan stuff.”

She still looked ashamed and he set down the figure next to the others with a sigh. He was filled with nostalgia as he remembered how she’d always wish the little figurine good night before going to bed.

It was hard to accept that his little princess was growing up.

“There was a time you couldn’t sleep without it.” He said still full of nostalgia.

Yumi’s blush deepened but she signaled him to put the figures on the empty box on top of the desk.

Toshinori smiled.

“If not for All Might’s retirement, I would’ve kicked out everyone but Bakugo, Jiro, Hagakure and Yumi.” Was saying Aizawa-sensei when she finally caught up with her classmates.

“Sorry, Aizawa-sensei, dad’s still not used to driving again…”

“Just get in line, Yumi.” Sighed the man at her interruption.

Her classmates were strangely silent as she took up the space between Shinso and Katsuki.

“As I was saying, I would’ve kicked out the eight that went and also the ten that knew and didn’t stop them for betraying our trust, no matter the reason. Id’ be grateful if from now on you’d follow the rules and act adequately to regain that confidence. That’s all. Now let’s go in.”

They were left staring at Heights Alliance with a dark cloud hanging over their heads at their teacher’s speech. And then Bakugo went and dragged off Kaminari before returning him as an idiot after having used his quirk for some reason.

Most of their classmates were too busy laughing at him to see Katsuki approach Kirishima with a bunch of money, but she’d been expecting it.

“What? Did you extort him?” asked Kirishima looking a bit worried.

“No! This is from Yumi and me…” replied Katsuki looking away sullenly. Kirishima looked at Yumi to find her watching and she winked at him. “You used up all your allowance, right?”

“How did you know I bought night-vision goggles?”

“Just take the money or you’ll make me feel bad!” Snapped Katsuki throwing the papers at him and walking past the stunned boy towards the Heights Alliance building.
