Chapter 36

Yumi listened as her teacher explained about their new home before giving them free time to accommodate their things and get used to the new space.

By the time night rolled around, she was fairly comfortable with how things were placed in her room and she went down to the common area.

As soon as she arrived, though, silence came over her classmates.

Yumi stayed at the door, staring at them and wondering if she could do something to make things less awkward. Thankfully, she had the best friend in the world in the shape of Shinso Hitoshi.

The boy walked toward her and pulled her into side-hug before glaring at her classmates.

“Come, Yumi, you’ll love the kitchen. It’s fully stocked for baking, from what I’ve seen. No need to bother with these empty-heads…”

“Who are you calling an empty-head, uh, loser!?” exploded Katsuki immediately.

Luckily, that seemed to break whatever tension there had been in the room and her classmates relaxed.

“So, Yumi-chan…” began Ochako. “your father is… All Might?”

Yumi paused where she was reaching up on her tiptoes for a baking tray, Shinso being taller reaching past her and pulling it down.

“Well… yes.”

“Why did you never tell us?” asked Kaminari.

“It’s not that I didn’t want to,” she confessed. “but it was dangerous for that information to spread. Especially since my father couldn’t maintain his stronger form for long anymore.”

“What’s with that, by the way? The media are being rather tight-lipped about it.” Said Kirishima.

“What’s it like being All Might’s daughter?” asked at the same time Hagakure.

“And why did you take the entrance exam if you could’ve gotten a recommendation?” added Jiro, looking curious.

That last question made her pause where she was kneading the dough for some cookies.

“I wanted to make sure that I got in because of my own hard work, not because I was the daughter of a great hero. My dad worked hard to get where he was, so I wanted to do the same.” She ended up shrugging.

Her classmates nodded as if they understood, though she was pretty sure by their faces that they didn’t.

Mineta was in a corner, crying.

“The goddess of class 1-A turned out to be the daughter of All Might…”

“And a very protective father.” Threw out Shinso with an evil smirk.

“I’m so dead…” muttered Mineta once and again.

Yumi snorted and turned her attention back to her work.

“What are you doing, by the way?” asked Tsuyu looking curiously at the two different mixes she was starting to knead into small balls.

“Chocolate-chip cookies and vanilla cookies.”

“They’re good.” Said Fumikage from where he was poking the chocolate-chip cookie dough and pilfering a few of the chocolate chips.

“Really? Can we try them, Yumi-chan?” asked Yaoyorozu with shining eyes.

“Who do you think I’m making them for?” said the girl with a smile.

After eating most of the cookies she prepared, their classmates decided to hold a competition on room presentation. It was proposed by Mina, probably knowing that their rooms wouldn’t stay as tidy as they were at the moment.

The first room was Midoriya’s and Yumi certainly understood when her father said he had ‘crazy fan stuff’. The room was covered in all kinds of All Might paraphernalia, even having a figurine of her father dressed in his UA teacher uniform that he must have purchased long after meeting them.

The boy was completely red-faced and the other boys were making fun of him in good humor whilst the girls thought it was cute. Yumi and Shinso both thought it was a bit creepy, but to each its own.

Tokoyami’s room was as dark as his soul: covered in dark hangings and drapes, with only a couple of chandeliers and strangely enough a crystal ball illuminating it in a dark purple hue.

The boy seemed ashamed, but she told him it suited him. Besides, if Dark Shadow felt more comfortable in the darkness, it was only logical that he live with that in mind.

Aoyama’s room was… glittery. There was no other word to describe it. Every space was occupied by a gauche old looking mirror and there was a suit of armor in the corner.

Surprisingly enough, Mineta’s room wasn’t as bad as they had feared, with only a couple of posters from sexy heroines and action figurines all around that reminded them a little of Izuku’s room.

Ojiro’s room was… well, normal. There was absolutely nothing special to it, nothing personalizing it on sight.

Tenya’s room was full of shelves containing books and… glasses. He had tens of pairs of glasses placed in perfect order.

Kaminari’s room was sporty, but with an eclectic mix of things. They also found out he collected baseball caps, for some reason.

Koda’s room was cute, with stuffed toys and a real living rabbit that jumped into Yumi’s arms and nuzzled her neck. She loved it.

If she’d thought Kaminari’s room had a sporty feel to it, it was nothing compared to Kirishima’s room: it was like walking into a gym! He even had a punching bag in the middle.

Shoji’s room was sparse. And she meant it literally. He had a comfy looking futon and a desk and absolutely nothing else.

Sero’s room was Asian-styled, with lots of wooden hangings and fluffy rugs.

Todoroki’s room was a completely Japanese-styled one, with even a bamboo plant in the corner, white-paper lamps and dark wood paneling. Yumi ignored the blush that crept up her chest at her female classmate’s comments of how cute he was.

Shinso’s room was very much like the one he had back home. He’d brought his books, his collection of DVDs and he had his training scarf hanging from a coatrack in the corner.

The last of the boys’ rooms was Rikido’s and it looked pretty normal but for the fact that he had an oven and was apparently in the middle of making a cake.

“I didn’t know you liked cooking.” She said.

“It’s just a hobby…” said the boy looking a bit embarrassed.

“Between you both I’ll need to train much more.” Said Ochako munching on her own piece of cake.

And then it was time to see the girl’s rooms.

Jiro’s was cool. It was themed red, black and white and it was full of enough instruments to create a band. She of course made the boys pay for their comment about it not being feminine enough.

Hagakure’s room was, well, pink. Again, she had no other words to describe it. It was full of frilly girly looking things, with even a big creepy looking teddy bear on top of the bed. At least she thought it was a bear, it could’ve been a mouse.

Mina’s room was still pink, but it was darker and it was combined with black, giving it a more mature look. In fact, it had a bit of a gothic feel to it, not something she’d ever thought to associate with Ashido.

Again, Ochako’s room was normal, though it already looked a bit untidy, despite not having been lived in yet.

Tsuyu told them she wasn’t feeling well, so the next room was Yaoyorozu’s. She once more showed how her rich-girl mentality hindered her often, having brought furniture that was just too big and antique for the room to feel anything but small.

“Don’t worry, Momo-chan, you can have it shipped back home next weekend and we can go buy something more comfortable.” Told her Yumi.

Finally, it was her turn to show her room and she stood at the doorway a bit sheepishly.

Her room was decorated in a soft yellow color with black and grey accents. The shelves were filled with books, except for the top one that held her collection of action figurines themed on heroes, and there was a soft old-looking snake plushy on top of her bed. The most surprising thing was probably the computer game in the corner, with a shelf dedicated to videogames.

“What’s League of Legends?” asked Mina looking over the titles in the shelf.

“It’s an old vintage videogame.”

“I didn’t take you for a gamer.” Replied Uraraka.

Yumi simply shrugged, a bit embarrassed at her guilty pleasure.

“Ohhh… is that an old Silver Age All Might and Eraser-head limited action figure?” asked Izuku in a breath as he looked at her top shelf with shining eyes.

Yumi nodded.

“Even I couldn’t get my hands on one of those…” he admitted.

Yumi ran a hand over the figures, her mind taking her back to the moment she’d first opened them. She already had an idea what she was going to get Izuku for his birthday.

“My dad got them for me when I turned twelve.” She explained. “I was a big fan of Eraser-head, so he thought I would love it and I did.”

“Wow…” muttered Izuku still looking up at them.

A few minutes later, they were all gathered together in the common room ―except Katsuki who’d been intelligent enough to simply go to sleep― ready to vote on the best room.

Turned out Rikido won due to his cake.

“Is it over already? Can I go to sleep?” almost complained Shoto.

She hid a smile. It was cute how a sleep-deprived Shoto seemed to get grumpy.

“Don’t forget to brush your teeth!” instructed Tenya sounding like a mother-hen.

“Of course.” Replied the boy surprising her when he took her arm and started to almost drag her with him.

“I’d like to speak with you.”

She looked up at him inquisitively, but he said nothing else and she shrugged.

However, before they both left, Uraraka’s voice stopped them.

“Deku, Iida, Yaoyorozu, Kirishima, Fumikage, Mezo and Shinso, you too. Do you have a minute?”

“Is it something important, Shoto?” she asked.

“No, I’ll tell you tomorrow.” Said the boy before following after the others.

Yumi shrugged and went to sleep.
