First Day
Chapter 9
The day had finally arrived.
The first day of classes at UA.
Yumi woke up with renewed energy after her birthday and she was a whirlwind of activity as she got dressed, made breakfast and ate with her dad.
Then she and Toshinori walked the short distance to the school ―Shinso would’ve gone with them, but his parents had for once insisted on taking him to class now that he’d entered the Hero Course, much to both their annoyance― and went into the teacher’s room, where she greeted everyone with the muffins she’d prepared the day before.
“You’re already my favorite student, little listener!” shouted Present Mic as he munched on one of the delicious looking chocolate muffins.
Yumi smiled nervously, something none of the teachers missed after getting to know her over the last two weeks as she helped her dad.
“Well, look at that, time flies by when you’re having fun.” She said with a nervous look around. “I better go before I’m late to class.”
Which, seeing as there were still fifteen minutes for classes to begin, meant ‘I better go before any of my classmates see me leaving this room and my chances of beginning on the right foot with them disappear’.
The teachers watched her go with varying levels of amusement, a pair of dark eyes half-hidden behind equally dark hair discreetly watching her go as its owner reached a hand out of his yellow sleeping bag for a muffin.

Yumi arrived in front of the giant door and knocked just in case before stepping inside.
There were four people already inside.
One of them was a girl with long ears finished in sharp pointy… things? She had no idea what they were, but she looked pretty, with dark blue hair and dark brown eyes.
Another was a girl with long black hair, most of it gathered in a lopsided ponytail, and equally dark eyes. She was stunning, with perfect pale skin and curves that were complimented by her tailored uniform.
Yumi nodded once at both of them, a gesture the girls returned, as she passed next to them and towards the back of the class. It was the place she usually sat with Shinso, with their back to the wall and a view of the whole class. There were two free places next to each other there, whilst the other two were already occupied by two boys quietly talking to each other.
One of them turned to introduce himself to her and she got her first good look at him.
He was obviously a mutant-type, with the head of a bird ―a raven. He had dark black feathers that looked extremely soft and a yellow beak, and eyes red as wine. The UA uniform complimented his looks nicely.
The other was also a mutant-type ―it being even the topic of their conversation before she arrived― and he had three arms, white hair combed to the side so it covered one dark eye and a mask that covered half his face.
The first introduced himself as Fumikage Tokoyami and his companion as Mezo Shoji.
“I’m Yagi Hiroyumi, but you may call me Yagi or Yumi.”
It wasn’t long before the girl was enjoying Fumikage’s dark humour and Mezo’s equally dark but quiet attitude.

Students slowly trickled in, with Shinso arriving when half the class hadn’t arrived yet and taking the empty seat next to hers.
Yumi catalogued each new student that crossed the doors slowly and carefully, with a few catching her attention more than the others.
There was a redheaded boy with almost cutting edges on his arms, a loud too strict boy with motors in his legs, an invisible girl and the exploding blond boy from her entrance exam group.
Then a purple blur attached itself to her leg and she jumped before Shinso acted and threw the boy to the furthest wall in the room.
The purple-headed boy with purple balls in his head looked at her with stars in his eyes and grappling hands.
“Such soft skin… it was so worth it… She is a goddess!”
Shinso immediately turned livid and it took all her effort to calm him down so he wouldn’t ruin his chances to become a hero by killing the little pervert.
When she’d mostly gotten Shinso to relax back in his seat, his eyes still glaring at the purple blob, Izuku arrived. He was the last to arrive and Yumi remembered that his mother didn’t drive, so he’d probably walked the considerable distance from his house to the school.
But her musings were interrupted when the tutor of Class 1-A made itself known.
She almost had a freak out.
Long dark hair, six o’clock shadow of a beard, white scarf and dark black clothes. Yes, the yellow sleeping bag man she’d yet to officially meet was indeed none other than Shota Aizawa, code name: Eraserhead.
Her favorite Pro Hero would be her teacher for the next three years.
All her joy eventually disappeared, replaced by nerves, as he gave them blue, red and white gym uniforms to change into and told them to wait outside.
She exchanged a look with Shinso, who was as wide-eyed as her, as a bad feeling overcame her.

It turned out they would not have the welcoming speech or the orientation session that most students got. No, instead they would get an evaluation exam.
Shinso listened intently as their new tutor explained the rules and the purpose of the trial, a manic grin taking over his face as he explained that the one that scored the lowest out of them all would be kicked out of the program forever.
He sent a sideways look to his best friend, his mind already churning with possibilities, none of them good.
He had to give his all in this, but his Quirk didn’t enhance anything physical. His only chance was doing better than Midoriya ―who still didn’t have full control of his power― or Yumi ―whose powers also didn’t physically enhance her.
He had to do his best; he had to pass. It would hurt so much to be thrown out of the program after getting this far.
It would hurt much more to be thrown out by their very own favorite Pro Hero.
For a moment he entertained the idea of using his powers on the purple blur ―Minoru Mineta― to make sure he was the one to fail, but soon shook his head to shake off those un-hero-like thoughts.
He growled as he focused back on the present: they had to pass this test.

Toshinori was not worried. No, nope, of course not. Why would he be worried?
His student, his daughter and her best friend had just been assigned the toughest teacher in UA who’d once kicked out a whole class on the first day. And someone who’d never got along with All Might himself. Why would he be worried?
So, yeah, Toshinori was utterly scared.
So maybe it was not so surprising that he escaped to the courtyard to watch the evaluation from a hidden corner.
He watched in silence as the trials progressed and some students showed that their Quirks were clearly advantageous to them.
In the end he needn’t have worried.
His student managed to show Aizawa that he had what it took to be a hero and survive the ordeal.
Still, it was mightily evident ―pardon the pun― that he was the worst student in the whole class. Even his Yumi-hime and Shinso-kun, who had no Quirks that could physically enhance them, managed to do well.
Aizawa must also be aware that both Yumi and Shinso could’ve used their Quirks to hinder their peers, but had chosen to not do something so unsporty.
At the end of the test, Toshinori left back to the teacher’s room, confident that his three students had managed to impress the tough Aizawa.

When Aizawa held them back after the test, Yumi was almost trembling with both nerves and excitement.
When he revealed he wanted to arrange a personalized test for her later to assess her, since her Quirk had not been suitable for any of the Quirks that day, her nerves disappeared.
Her excitement only grew at Eraserhead’s parting words.
“You too, Shinso. Your physical form is almost as bad as Midoriya’s.”
