Buttercream
November 30th, 1981
“What did you just say?”
“ Buttercream .” Harry said while laughing.
Both men looked at the kid seated on the wide new sofa, wide eyes as he repeated the word. And not any word, but the first one he learned with them.
“Really?” Sirius smiled puzzled. “Do we say buttercream a lot?”
“I don’t think so.”
The three of them had recently moved to the duplex Sirius convinced Remus to. In the end that idea was not so spontaneous; two days later they already had their new home, and it was just needed one week for them to settle.Remus was upset, a bit with his lover but mostly with himself as he foolishly believed him, as if he hadn’t known Sirius for ten years now.
They even had the first moon just a week before, and even if they had to let Harry with the Longbottoms and left a tired and ill werewolf, they could say that it was a complete success.
They were now playing with Harry when the little boy started grinning and shouting silly words because of the big black dog that changed to his uncle, runned around him and let him stroke his tummy.
“Maybe it’s because of all those stupid cooking programs you make us see.” Remus pinched his arm.” Ouch! But it’s true, they are Horrible. Right baby? They’re boring.”
“Yes! Buttercream!” Harry babbled happily.
“Well, I’m sorry if I don’t want to eat junk food day after day. You’ll cook the next week; If I have to eat just one fucking day any type of hamburger or sandwich, consider yourself dead.”
“Hey, don’t speak like that with poor Harry here.” He said with a childish voice, kissing his lips softly. “C’mon buttercream, we have to give you a bath so you can be clean and fresh for tomorrow.”
“No! Play!”
“We’ll play, we have plenty of time for that later. But now is the time to have a bath.” Remus tried to convince him while catching the boy that was trying to escape, crawling in the not so long for that sofa.
“Me play!” Harry was now crying and screaming, having a tantrum in the werewolf arms.
“Harry, listen to me. If you behave well and have a bath with uncle Moony and uncle Pads, you’ll have pancakes for breakfast. With chocolate. And cream.”
“Buttercream?” The boy started sobbing while Remus wiped his crocodile tears out.
“Yes, buttercream .” Sirius laughed softly. Then, he transformed himself into the dog to keep the kid smiling.
They finally could bathe Harry, telling him stories of wizards and witches, grinning internally when a yawn would escape from his mouth; the little monster was starting to feel tired.
Remus put him his favourite winter pyjama as Sirius would dry gently his hair, claiming how messy it was. They picked him up to take him to bed and tuck him in, in complete silence as Harry seemed to be in a deep sleep.
“You spoil him a lot.” Remus finally whispered while sitting in bed, now just the two of them in their bedroom and not wanting to wake the kid up, even if it was quite impossible since the long distance between them.
“How couldn't I?” the dark-haired man replied, closing softly the door behind him without stopping looking at the werewolf, walking to him and letting himself fall carefully above Remus’s warm body to start kissing his mouth, cheeks and perfect neck as the other closed his eyes; letting his hands outline the scars that were visible, as he had done a thousand times before. “Now let me spoil you.”
…
December 1st, 1981
They tried hard to make that day as trivial as possible. Eating the promised pancakes for breakfast, going to the ministry, staring at the TV in silence and playing as possible with Harry who didn’t seem to know or bother what happened just a month before.
But it became impossible for Sirius when the bell rang and when the door opened, there was Mary on the other side.
“Pads.” She greeted with her hand, shaking it in the air like a puppy would with its tail, childesly.
He looked at her, smiling and letting her friends' eyes track his body, just to revise if something had changed in all that time.
But it didn’t.
He was still that 17 year old teenager, rascal and full of life.
“Oh, Mary.” He finally hugged her with tears in his eyes, lifting her from the floor as she let a scream escape from her mouth.
They stayed like that for a few seconds, smelling each other's perfume and drowning in the memories of those crazy years in Hogwarts when all of them were available to live them.
“How can you be so stupid, Sirius?” The three girls (and Remus) started laughing at him, almost crying while the other boys tried not to in respect of their beloved mate.
“And that’s what I get from trusting you!”
It was the spring of their fourth year, and that Saturday evening they decided to listen to one of Sirius' vinyls and play one of those board games Remus carried with him that year.Ludo, it was called.
When Remus explained to his friends what the game was about and the rules, Sirius couldn’t stop thinking about how cool that was.
How cool Remus was.
And because of how lost in the werewolf wet lips and green eyes was without even realising, he didn’t hear any of the rules. He started copying the others' moves, hoping no one had seen him.
But everyone did; everyone except Remus and Marlene, who was drawing quietly.
And when Mary realised that, she decided to play a little prank on the usual prank maker. Now she had eaten all of his chips, and Sirius didn’t find that so funny.
“You’ll learn to be more focused the next time.” Lily chose wisely his words, fighting the boy with her gaze. “You should let Marlene play.”
“Hm?” The blonde girl came out of her thoughts as she heard her name. It was strange for Marlene to be so quiet, everyone also realised that.
“Oh, right? No game for me.” He standed up as he changed his face to another one that suited his last name better, as he learned by looking at his mother or cousins. He paused dramatically to look straight forward at each of his friends, to end on Mary’s eyes. “Then no game for you.”
Quickly, he catched the board and runned across the Common room up to his room, being followed by the others and listening how they complained loudly about what he did. Fastly, he locked the bedroom entrance with a spell and sat in Peter’s bed -The nearest one.
“You fucker, that’s mine!” Remus hitted the door twice.
“C’mon, Pads, don’t be such a dickhead” That was from Wormtail.
“But I was winning!” James groaned as Sirius imagined, almost seeing his best friend arms crossed and doing a grin.
“You’re a sore loser, Sirius Black!” Mary yelled, knowing that it would bother him with those words.
“And you’re a fucking cheater! We both have our little things, don't we?” He yelled back.
“Give me my goddamn board you moron.”
“Please Padfoot!”
“Even you Prongs, even you betrayed me.”
“Can you stop making such a drama?” Lily snorted.
“It’s not our fault you focused more on Remus' lips than on what he said!” Peter finally shouted what everyone was thinking.
And then silence. A big uncomfortable moment of silence.
Both Sirius and Remus were now heavily flustered. Even if Sirius couldn’t see through walls, he knew that his Moony was even more rosy than him, and even confused. He could also imagine each of his friends, looking anywhere but the door or Remus.
“Shut up, Wormtail!” He could only reply.
“Hey, Mary.” Remus saluted with an almost broken voice to hug her friend. “How are you?”
“Good, well… yeah, good.” The doubt on her words was noticeable. “I brought butterbeer, but you’ll probably already have.”
“Actually, no, we don’t. Come in, it’s freezing.” He grabbed the bottles in Mary’s hand and placed them in the kitchen, hearing how his boyfriend and his best friend seated in the sofa, putting a Fleetwood Mac vinyl on the record player -Mary’s favourite back then in Hogwarts.
“So, you-you’re Harry?” Mary asked as Sirius entered with the snacks and the butterbeers.
The boy nodded and smiled wildly to her.
“Just like his father.” She muttered with a nostalgic face, then grinned. “Nice to meet you, Harry Potter. I’m Mary Macdonald.”
“Uncle Mary.”
They all laughed at him, “Well, more of an aunt.” Sirius said. “He doesn’t really meet any women lately as you can observe.”
“Yeah, it must be difficult with two gay dudes living with him. “She kept laughing as Remus almost choked on his beer because of the words chosen and Sirius blushed a bit. They were not really used to that word. “What? Now you’ll have a cool aunt to be with, and to learn a bit about women, you’ll see. We are really cool too.”
Even if Harry probably didn’t understand most of what Mary was saying, He just nodded and smiled at her. It’s love at first sight , she said joking, trying to get a jealous Sirius from it.
They spent the rest of the day on that sofa, most of the time giving all their attention to the little boy who was pleased with it. Changing the vinyls, talking about them, or about Mary’s girlfriend, or their new jobs, or films they had watched, or Mary’s life, or their life; just not to talk about other things.
But when the sun hided and the moon showed up, Harry fell asleep and was taken to his bed. Then, the memories could be almost touched in the room. The nostalgia was smelled in every wood plank or picture, and all they could think about was their friends. James, Lily, Marlene.
And that fucking bastard.
“They didn’t deserve what happened. Oh god, everyone but them.” Mary broke the ice with a lump in her throat, scratching her forehead carefully.
“They were the best humans I’ll ever meet.” Sirius added, with a small voice.
Remus, who spent most of the day they were together quiet, stayed that way, without stopping to look at the fire on the chimney at any moment.
“For the memories.” Mary raised her bottle, trying not to cry.“For all the happiness and sadness of them. For that fucking school, and for that idiot that I would kill if I could. For the past, but mostly for the future. For that kid. For James, for Lily and for Marlene.”
“For them.” The werewolf finally added, staring at the other two that were left from their group of friends and also raising the butterbeer.
“For them.”
