The Inheritance Test
Harry was unaware of what was going on. First he was taken away from his home with the Dursleys, not that he minded. That part wasn’t that bad, the rest of the morning however was starting to make him feel mental. The Dursleys had spent two days travelling to get away from the people trying to contact him. Eventually they travelled by boat, in a storm, to a hut on a rock, even Petunia and Dudley thought Vernon was going mad. Then, at midnight, a giant man had threatened the Dursleys, cursed Dudley with a pigs tail and told him he was a wizard because his parents were magical and he was going to a magical school called Hogwarts. The giant couldn’t even give him one of the letters that the Dursleys and him had been running away from because he hadn’t been given one before setting off to meet him.
Upon reaching the alley, Diagon Alley Harry remembered it was called, both him and Hagrid were ambushed by a terrifying but for some reason familiarly comforting looking man who then took him away from Hagrid, which made Harry’s day just a bit better after seeing the look on the giants face, half giant he remembered Hagrid telling him. Although he did quickly cover up his amusement to a blank look knowing the rules the Dursleys had told him about laughing at other people.
He was pulled by his hand towards the bank, which was a magnificent structure, but he drifted a lot closer towards the Professor, he had made an assumption since no actual introduction had been made, when he caught a glance of the funny little men running the bank. He later learned that they were Goblins and that they did not tolerate disrespect. He was not quite sure exactly what went on with the man who took him away from Hagrid but one moment he was really stern and the next moment, when they went into the Goblins office, he was looking at him in rather a peculiar expression, causing Harry to back away, pressing against the wall.
“Hadrian?” Severus gasped out. Harry did not have a chance to reply to tell him that he was just Harry before the Goblins walked back in.
“I think an inheritance test is in order don’t you?” The Goblin sneered, signalling discreetly for Severus to sit down and stop staring because he was scaring the little boy who very clearly had no idea what was happening. “Mr Potter, if you would like to take a seat and then we can begin.”
The goblin paused for a moment before speaking again.
“I’m Griphook. I am the account manager for the Ancient and Noble House of Potter. Although I am not sure I will be needed however I will oversee this case for now. Mr Potter please could you put seven drops of blood onto this paper.”
Harry was still so confused as to what was going on but he did as he was told. He was shocked and awed when the paper suddenly came alive with writing appearing across it, like something invisible was writing on the page. He kept forgetting that magic was real, and that the world he was now in was magical. He sat on the chair waiting for someone to say something, his hands under his thighs, with his legs swinging. He still hadn’t noticed that his appearance had changed until he tilted his head down and his hair fell into his eyes. He gasped loudly, pulling the strand in front of his eyes. Both the Professor and the Goblin turned to face him.
“What did you do to my hair?” He stared accusingly at Severus who tried to hold back a coo at how adorable his son looked whilst trying to be fierce.
“Mr Potter, if you could take a look at this piece of parchment. I think this will explain a few things.” Griphook handed the paper to Harry before handing a slip of paper to Severus who took it throwing the Goblin a confused glance.
Harry read the paper not realising that he was managing to read perfectly well without any glasses on. He had lost them a few days prior when Dudley was chasing him.

Harry didn’t understand a word of what was written on the paper but before he could ask he was drawn out of his reverie by a gasp from the dark man sat on his left. Looking over he spotted the usually stern man crying. He quickly turned to face the Goblin, allowing the man to have his moment of vulnerability in peace. He knew what is was like for someone to watch you cry and it wasn’t pleasant.
“Mr Potter, do you understand what is written on that document in front of you?” Griphook asked the small boy when he saw the look of confusion on his face. Harry shook his head.
“You are not Harry James Potter like you thought you were. Your name is Hadrian Severus Malfoy, the second born child of Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy and Severus Prince-Malfoy.”
Harry shook his head gently, for it was starting to pound from the onslaught of information but also from the bruises that scattered across his face. “They were James and Lily Potter. That Hagrid man told me.” He said softly.
“No Hadrian,” Severus started, after clearing his face of his tears, “A Goblin inheritance test never lies. You are my son, not James and Lily Potters. It is the reason why your hair is now black and blonde. You have been held under a very strong glamour for most of your life. The goblins have magic surrounding their offices to rid people of their glamours temporarily for people who need to hide in the public eye but need something from the bank.”
“So that they don’t pretend to be someone else?” Hadrian questioned softly, nodding to himself before snapping his head up when a thought came to him. “Why did you never come and get me if you are my father! Why would you leave me alone at the Dursleys for ten years!?”
Severus felt tears once again come to his eyes. He knelt on the floor in front of the boy and gently took a hold of his hands. Once the boy didn’t pull away did he begin to tell his tale.
“You were born on the 8th of July 1985. We had always wanted a second child so when you arrived it was a miracle as Narcissa and Lucius thought they wouldn’t even be able to have another child, until I joined their marriage. You were the sweetest little boy. You barely cried and you were always smiling at everyone no matter who it was. On the 8th of July 1986 we were having a mini party for your first birthday in the Lestrange Manor, that is your mother sisters house, and everything was going perfectly. Draco, your brother, had been a massive nuisance all day so me, your mother and your father took him into the next room to speak to him about his behaviour because it was your day and you were getting upset about it. We had only been out of the room for five minutes when we heard Bellatrix, your mothers sister, scream. We rushed back in and found her unconscious on the floor next to her husband Rodolphus but you and Rabastan were missing. It was only when the pair woke up an hour later did we then know what happened.”
By this point Hadrian had slowly slipped out of his chair and to both of their difficulties was half in Severus’ lap, or technically sat on his knees as he was still kneeling on the floor. They were both crying now.
“Rabastan was never Rabastan. He had already been in Azkaban for five years at this point. Someone had been polyjuiced to act like him for five years and he kidnapped you. We didn’t come for you because we didn’t know you were alive, all of our tracking charms we had on you failed to work.”
“What’s Azkaban?” Hadrian asked carefully, knowing the Dursley’s rules about asking questions.
“It’s a prison for all the bad witches and wizards out there. A bit like a muggle prison.” Seeing Hadrian’s face screw up in confusion at the word muggle, he elaborated. “Muggle is the term used for someone with no magic.”
“How did you not know that the man was not the man?” Severus at first did not understand what he was asking.
“You mean how did we not know Rabastan wasn’t him for five years?” Seeing the boys nod he continued. “We barely ever saw him. We saw him for about an hour on special occasions like birthdays, Samhain, or Yule but never much between those times. Polyjuice normally lasts between one and two hours.”
“Lord Prince, Heir Potter, whilst this little reunion warms my heart, I would love if we could get him treated and cleansed of all the blocks and potions placed on his system. Whilst a few more minutes should not matter, he is currently aged up five years which is detrimental to the magical core of his body and we would like to remove it as soon as possible.”
“Ah of course Griphook,” Severus replied trying to hold back his anger at Albus Dumbledore. He stood up with the small boy still in his arms. “Where do we go?”
“Follow me,” The trio headed down a small corridor until they reached a cleansing room. “Please place him on the bed for me Lord Prince. Unfortunately I cannot have you in the same room as him as the process is going on so I will have to ask you to go back to my office. I will come back shortly and we can go through Heir Potters inheritance test.”
Severus nodded and complied reluctantly, not wanting to leave the son he had only just got back in a room with Goblins. However he trusted them and knew they would not do anything to harm the child. Just as he was about to leave he heard a soft voice behind him.
“I forgive you Daddy.”
