And three years later, they welcomed their second child. Diagon Alley

Lucius watched as his husband left and he involuntarily let out a little sigh. He had never recovered after the loss of their youngest child Hadrian. Their little Haddy had been a godsend for their whole family. Both he and Narcissa had wanted two children and Severus was happy to be the biological father. See, Lucius couldn’t bear children, having Draco had been a miracle, he cursed his family for the pain they had caused him when he first found out he was infertile, but then Severus came along. For the first three years of their marriage Severus had always struggled forming a relationship with Draco. He had tried and tried but Draco had just not taken to him at all. So when Hadrian came along Severus could not have been more happy.

After the loss of his little boy in 1986 Severus went into a state of depression, one that neither Lucius or Narcissa could get him out of. But Draco could, he at only six years of ago provided Severus with a reason to stay alive. And from that day forth, their bond as father and son was solidified. But now Lucius watched as his husband slipped again. The thought of taking his dead ex best friends and high school bully’s child to get his school supplies on a day where he should be celebrating with his remaining son,  just brought back unwanted memories he knew his husband had hoped to forget.

But he knew that he had to put all of it aside for today. It was a momentous occasion for their eldest child as he had turned eleven and had received his Hogwarts letter so they had decided to spend the whole day in Diagon Alley buying his school supplies and then going to celebrate in Draco’s favourite restaurant for dinner. They had travelled on a Wednesday so it wouldn’t be busy but Lucius knew it would get busier once the news of Harry Potter being in the Alley inevitable got around.

They obviously, without sounding snobby, knew that Draco would get into Hogwarts. Despite being on the register since his birth, like most magically born children were, only those whose magical core was over a certain level were accepted, the rest were sent to the foreign magical schools or, Lucius was sure, a smaller magical school located in Wales. Lucius knew Draco was over this level, he had Black and Malfoy blood in him, the whole family going back generations had gone to Hogwarts. This was not too separate the more powerful children from the lesser powerful, it was simple a safety measure. Wizards and Witches whose magical core was below level three, were accepted into another magical school because it would take them longer to get complete control over their magic. They were by no means squibs, they just needed a lot more training than Wizards and Witches with a core over 3 to be able to subconsciously have a hold over their magic.

They had only just reached Diagon Alley and were about to enter the first shop when he noticed Severus entering the main street and moving quickly towards the half giant oaf. Lucius was confused at first, until he spotted the small scrawny boy stood next to Hagrid, the schools ground keeper.

“Surely that isn’t Mr Potter?” Lucius whispered to his wife. Narcissa followed his gaze, the grip she had on Draco’s hand tightening so that he didn’t pull away from her and get lost in the busy lunch time crowds at the Alley.

“It must be! See Sev is taking him into the bank. Lucius if we go into Madame Malkins, Sev and Mr Potter will join us shortly. That way we could all walk around together, Draco can have his father here with him on his special day and we can also give Mr Potter a little Slytherin influence?” She whispered back slyly. Lucius smirked at his wife’s words before guiding his family into the shop. They both were confident that Severus would come to Madame Malkins first as that is what most people did when collecting their children’s school supplies. It was almost like a good luck ritual to follow the list of supplies needed in the exact order it was written down in. Then you could buy any extra things you needed to buy afterwards. It also made sense to get the robes first as they took the longest to make. Lucius looked over the letter one more time to make sure he knew what to buy. As many times as he had shopped here for himself, it did not stop him from obsessivley checking the list to make sure Draco got everything.

After about an hour Lucius started to worry about where his husband was. He knew that he could of easily been stuck with the Goblins doing all their usual tests because Mr Potter had lived in the muggle world for eleven years but it didn’t normally take this long. He imagined his husbands grumpy face at having to wait in the bank for ages for the spawn of James Potter and immediately knew it would be a good idea to go and check on them.

“Cissy, are you okay with staying with Draco for a little bit? I just want to see that there are no problems at the bank for Mr Potter.”

Narcissa smirked internally, knowing that her husband was just a big worry wart. She nodded her head.

“Of course Lucy,” she teased, “Make sure you sort all those problems out won’t you?”

Lucius didn’t reply, just smiled at her and told his son that he would see him shortly before heading off towards Gringotts. He ambled along with the poise of a pureblood, not knowing what waited for him ahead.
