His face had a flash of shock cross it before turning down as he realized what he'd said.
Tears flooded Hermione eyes. "I thought you had changed. Thought you actually cared about me. But no. I'm still just Mudblood to you, aren't I?"
"I do care for you!" Draco protested. "That's not what I meant to say! When I was younger, if I spoke kindly to or about muggleborns, I would be subjected to the Cruciatious Curse. I was scared and habit took over. Please."
Draco's silver eyes were full of tears now too. He didn't have the heart to look up to see as Hermione's face softened slightly. "You were scared?"
