Denial and Depression
Summary
Lucius never thought he would suffer the same tragedy as Amos Diggory. He thought naively that if he obeyed Voldemort, no harm from his side would befall them. But here he was, clutching the corpse of his son on the floor, body maimed by Death Eaters and covered in hardened crimson. His perfect boy.

A Game

Narcissa set down a board and sat adjacent to him. She stared into his eyes for a few seconds. The eyes she hadn't seen in months. She noticed they seemed to be more glassy and hollow than before. Lucius didn't speak to her.

"Is it correct to assume that you won't come downstairs with me if I simply ask nicely?" She asked.

He nodded.

"Then I'm here to make a wager with you."

She waved her wand and multiple little pieces floated up to the board. Lucius looked intrigued.

"A game of chess. If I lose, then I won't bother you again. I'll let you wallow in your sorrow forever. But if I win, then you'll come outside with me."

She reached her hand out to shake his. Lucius wasn't sure why she wanted him to come outside. He wasn't sure he even wanted to know. Betting this on a simple game was idiotic, but from his time spent with Narcissa, he knew one thing for sure.

Narcissa was terrible at chess.

And if winning this meant she would separate herself from him forever….

He shook her hand and the game began.

After nothing but a few moments, she already had him beat. "Checkmate." She slyly said. Lucius stood. "Best two out of three." He commanded. She shrugged. "Whatever you say."

She continued to win over him easily, swiftly disqualifying his pawns and cornering his kings to where he could make no move. It was quite close in the very last game, but she still managed to triumph. When it was over, Lucius was floored.

"How…. Did you do that?" He whispered.

"A little bit of luck." She responded. That's when he noticed the vial in her pocket.

"Get dressed, it's a bit windy out today."
