Theo

It was five months after their first haircut that Ginny finally had their hair how they wanted it. They had been regularly cutting it since the start of the school year but it felt like each cut was worse than the last. It wasn't until Theo had come up to Ginny during a rare trip to the library and offered to cut their hair that they actually started to feel hopeful.

"How do you even know how to do this?"
They were hidden away in a bathroom in the Ravenclaw tower. Neutral ground. Theo didn't want the Gryffindors staring at him and Ginny didn't want the Slytherins harassing them. Ginny was just grateful Luna had let them in, they didn't even want to think about the sorts of riddles the Ravenclaw eagle would ask.

"I've been cutting my own hair since I was 8." Theo was stood behind them, scissors in hand and eyes focused.

Ginny stared at him through the mirror. "Really? I had never cut my own hair before this year."

Theo hummed as he started to carefully trim away. At least he looked like he knew what he was doing.

"My mum used to cut my hair." He admitted this on a whisper as if it were a secret. "After she died, I learned to do it myself. I wouldn't trust my dad with a pair of scissors anywhere that close to me." He said it with a touch of humour, but Ginny didn't think it was all that funny.

They sat in silence for a moment, save for the snip of the scissors.

"I've been reading these books Tracey gave me." They weren't sure what made them blurt that out.

"Oh?" Theo seemed happy to roll with the sudden topic change.

"Yeah.. they're really interesting. They're about- well, gender and stuff and people and uh-"

Theo was smiling in the mirror.

"What?" Ginny went to turn before remembering they weren't meant to be moving.

"Nothing, nothing. It's just that Trace gave me the same books back in my second year. She's really got an eye for people like us."

"People like us?"

"Queer." He said it so simply that it reminded her of Luna. "Tilt your head down." He moved around them slightly.

Ginny had been reading a lot since Tracey had given them those books. They had even sought the girl out a few times to ask more in-depth questions. A lot of it just left Ginny with more questions, but some of it was really making sense to them. It was like Ginny had just realised they'd been wearing the wrong shoe size the whole time and had been forcing themselves to try and fit in it.

"There." Theo stepped back with a gentle smile. "Have a look."

Ginny focused on themselves in the mirror and almost gasped.
They looked exactly like a younger Fred or George.
Ginny felt something warm spreading across their chest and reached up to brush their hands along their hair. It was so short. It was incredible. They looked-
"I look like a boy."
Ginny just registered the tears falling down their face.
Theo was silent behind them.
"I look like..." The sentence stuttered out.
"You look like you." Theo filled in, gently.
Ginny sobbed, arms wrapping around themselves. Theo pulled them into a hug.

"I look like me."

It was very late that night when Ginny huddled with Luna on her bed and wrote and rewrote letter after letter to their parents. It took 7 attempts, but Ginny finally decided to send them a letter explaining who they really were.
