Kokichi's POV
I walked my normal route to my next class through the dark and smelly hallway. There was a light at the end of the hall that flickered everyday and has been for years. I could feel the stickiness of the tiles on the floor as I dragged my feet along. The hallways were as empty as always, there's only 16 kids in our grade. Our school is small but it's only meant for us 16 students as there's only 16 rooms for us to stay in.
Here at our school we also all have something we're really good at, we call them our ultimates. We're like a group of 16 kids who all excel in a certain area. Not normal areas however, we're more high school prodigies. I am the Ultimate Supreme Leader, some also say I'm the Ultimate Liar.
Normally I didn't run into anyone on my way to class however as I approached the flickering light I saw someone emerge from the darkness, Shuichi Saihara. Shuichi is tall and wears almost all black, all the time. He has beautiful grey eyes but they're almost always covered by this dumb hat he wears. Shuichi is the Ultimate Detective and he is friends with almost everyone in our class, except for me. In fact, I'm fairly sure he hates me. I'm aware hate is a strong word but it fits this situation perfectly. Me however, I like him, a bit too much.
I tried my best to not make any eye contact with him while we passed each other but he makes it so hard. He smiled with a wave and what did I do back? Nothing! Not even a smile back! If he didn't hate me before he definitely did now! I make even myself mad! I started to pout, mad I wasn't able to even wave back at him.
As I was overthinking my life decisions, I felt someone grab my wrist and pull me down a branched off hallway. When I caught my balance I looked up to see my friend, Kaito Momota. Kaito is the Ultimate Astronaut, he lied about his age on an astronaut test and somehow did better than everyone else! That's how he got his ultimate. He liked to go around and introduce himself as "Kaito Momota, Luminary of the stars".
"Hey buddy." Kaito greeted me loudly.
"Hey."
"You don't look happy?"
"Do I ever Kaito?"
"Yeah! Usually you look pretty happy when Shuichi is aroun-" I quickly put my hand over his mouth to be sure no one over heard him.
"Be quiet!"
"What he's not right now! You would look happier if he was."
"You never shut up do you Kaito?"
"Nope!"
Kaito is a great friend but he doesn't have a filter and to top it off he's not smart, common sense or academically. He's always really loud too, no inside voice. I'm sure you could hear his whisper from 10 miles away.
"So why do you look sad?" Kaito asked.
"I'm not sad! I'm just not happy."
"Welllll, why are you not happy?"
"I don't wanna talk about it." I pouted and crossed my arms. I tend to act like a child a lot.
"Aweee ok, but how am I supposed to help then?"
"Let me feel tall!" Kaito is around 6 feet tall so when he picks me up and let's me ride on his shoulders I get to feel super tall! I also just enjoy bossing people around and he makes that easy. We had the next class together so we walked to class with me on his shoulders. As soon as we got to class however, the teacher didn't seem to like me being on his shoulders so I had to get down. It was fun while it lasted.
After class Kaito started to walk to his next class. I have a study hall that I don't normally do much in so I decided to skip it and go with Kaito. When we got to his class was about to sit down next to him when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Hello Kokichi." A familiar voice greeted. I looked up to see Shuichi standing next to me. "You're not normally in this class?"
"Nope! I'm just here for Kaito."
"Lucky for you our teacher never pays attention, she probably won't even notice you're here." Shuichi sat down next to Kaito. There wasn't an open seat behind Kaito but there was behind Shuichi. I couldn't bring myself to sit down. I was way too nervous.
Kaito knows I like Shuichi so he decided to take things into his own hands. He took my shoulders and pulled me into the seat behind Shuichi. Shuichi looked at me a bit oddly but smiled. I was able to smile back this time! Shuichi was right, the teacher didn't notice I was there at all and most of the whole class was spent messing around and talking. I actually talked to Shuichi for once! Kaito told me after class he was proud of me.
After that class was lunch, Kaito told me he usually sits with his girlfriend, Maki, Kaede and Shuichi. Maki Harukawa is the ultimate Child Caregiver and Kaede Akamatsu is the ultimate pianist. I normally sit with my other friends Kiibo and Miu. Kiibo is the ultimate robot, he was made in a lab, don't know why he needs to be in school, and Miu is the ultimate Inventor. Miu Iruma is super smart when it comes to inventions and mechanics, however like Kaito, she's very dumb common sense wise.
Kaito told me I should sit with him today instead. He likes trying to be a matchmaker. Him and Shuichi are pretty close so if there was any chance of Shuichi liking me back I'm sure Kaito would know. I'm sure Shuichi likes Kaede however, that's part of the reason I don't sit with them. Kaede likes Shuichi and she makes it very obvious so I'm sure he's noticed by now.
Kaito made me sit by him anyway.Shuichi, Kaede and Maki were already at the table. I could see Miu and Kiibo from across the lunch room smiling at me. Kaito pushed me into the seat next to Shuichi, it was really awkward.
Kaede was in the other seat next to Shuichi. She's super clingy, Shuichi kept trying to scoot his chair away from her which caused him to scoot closer to me. As Kaede scooted closer and closer Shuichi did the same. Kaito gave me this look of "yeah I knew this would happen." Shuichi backed up so much he ended up hitting my chair.
"Sorry Kokichi!" Shuichi apologized quickly.
"Why are you even sitting here?" Kaede looked at me angrily.
"Kaito made me." I replied as Kaito smiled.
"Well you're in my way!" Kaede yelled.
"In your way?" I questioned.
"What if I said I had a crush on someone else?" Shuichi said, looking at a Kaede.
"As if!" Kaede shouted back. Shuichi stood up and grabbed my hand, dragging me up with him.
"What if I like Kokichi instead!" Shuichi shouted in spite of Kaede. I looked at Kaito scared as to what was going on.
"You couldn't possibly!" Kaede shouted loudly.
"Oh yeah?" Shuichi looked me in the eyes and pulled me into a tight hug. He looked to Kaede and stuck his tongue out at her. Kaede threw a fit and ran away. I'm not entirely sure what happened; it seemed to have gone well though!
