December 11, 1981
“Alright, Lilly,” Remus called to her from their kitchen, where he was smoking a cigarette “I will be gone for the next week or so, and Sirius will be gone the next few days, so if you need anything call the order or the Weasleys. Molly offered to have you stay there y’know?”
Lilly was organizing the record shelf, trying to keep herself busy.
“Alright, but I won't need anything and Molly offered but they have 7 kids, they don't need more people crowding up that odd-looking house of theirs.” Lily replied, stacking all of the David Bowie records side by side.
Remus put out his cigarette and walked into the living room
“Sirius won’t like that you've rearranged his records, he had them very organized.” Remus laughed grimly.
“Yea, I s'pose. But I have not a thing to do here and Mad Eye won't give me anything to do.” Lily spoke exasperated, stacking up the ABBA records one by one.
Remus looked at his muggle watch that Lily had gifted him. The time was 8:04.
“Well Lily, I have to go but I’ll be back in the next week or so. Please, please if you need anything go to the Weasleys. Or even the Longbottoms. Sirius will be back soon,” He grabbed his coat from the hook, “and you know where everything is, and the corner shop isn’t very far from here.” Remus put his coat on and walked over to Lilly,
“There's money on the fridge and…”
“Yea, yes of course I know where everything is. I’ll be fine Remus, I promise.” Lily looked at him pointedly.
Remus kissed Lilly on the top of her head and put his wand in his pocket.
“Well, do I look like a muggle?” Remus laughed, spinning around for Lilly, almost tripping over his oversized Doc Martens.
“Of course you do, love.” Lily replied, waving goodbye to him.
Remus left the flat and locked the door behind him, leaving Lilly alone.
She was used to it by now though, everyone always had somewhere to go but her. Lily put all of the records back onto their shelf and put one on. David Bowies, ‘Suffragette City’ rang throughout the empty flat as Lily made her way to her bedroom and fell asleep.
—------------------
Lily woke up to the sound of a loud crash coming from the living room.
She flew out of her bed, grabbing her wand from the side table and slowly crept down the hall, into the living room where she found an unconscious Regulus Black laying face down covered in soot on the floor in front of the fireplace.
“Regulus!?” Lily sputtered, tapping Regulus’ shoulder with her toe, rolling him over.
He was clearly out cold, and had a nasty bruise on his eye, his nose bleeding.
He had been attacked, but by who? Lily wondered how he even got to this flat, when the other fireplace the hooks to this one is the Weasleys, the Longbottoms, and….
“Mad-Eye..” Lily gasped.
Regulus was stirring, and Lily jumped back, holding her wand in front of her.
“Rennervate,” Lily whispered, pointing her wand at Regulus, who opened his eyes.
Regulus looked at Lily, who was holding her wand in front of her and jumped up, putting his hands up.
“Woah, woah Lily,” Regulus cried, “Look, I’m sorry to just show up all unconscious and stuff but there were these snatchers, and then Cissy, and then they tried to get me and I fought back and somehow ended up at some crazy dude with a creepy ass eye who did something to me and just threw me in a fireplace I guess.” Regulus spoke so fast, his hands still in the air and his nose bleeding like crazy.
“Come on.” Lily sighed, grabbing his arm and leading him down the hall to the small kitchen. She helped him into a stool and grabbed some paper towels from next to the sink, hanging them to Regulus.
“So.” Lily remarked, staring at Regulus, who had shoved the tissue up his nose.
“So….” He repeated uncertainty.
“What the fuck do you want, Regulus?” Lily exclaimed, smacking her hands on the table, making Regulus jump.
“I don't want anything,” Regulus informed, “I was forced here. I was going to come on my own in maybe a month or so. When you’ve calmed down since the - er - funeral incident.”
Lily scoffed and folded her arms, turning away from the pale boy.
“What did you want to talk to me about at the funeral anyways?” Lily answered coldly.
Regulus shifted in his seat and cleared his throat.
“Erm- well could we do this later or possibly tomorrow? I'm dead tired and honestly just want to sleep right now…”
Lily turned around to face him and rolled her eyes.
“Oh you think i'll sleep with you around, pretty boy?”
Regulus blushed and looked at his fingers.
“J-just please. One hour? Then you can wake me and interrogate me. Ask me anything, really. Right now though, I just want to sleep.”
Regulus sounded sincere when he said this, making Lily fold.
“Okay.” She mumbled, “ ONE hour, then I'm waking you up and your going to tell me what the fuck is going on.”
Regulus sighed, grateful and followed Lily into the living room.
“You can sleep on the couch.” She pointed.
Regulus got onto the couch and fell asleep almost instantly, Lily sat down in the rocker across from him and watched him. Counting down until the hour was over.
—————-
Lily awoke with a start, her nightmare causing her to fall out of the rocker and wake a sleeping Regulus. Lily had the same nightmare every time she slept. Harry and James dying. The flash of green light. Voldemort's laugh.
“Lily?” Regulus asked, concerned.
“I'm fine.” Lily answered shortly, getting up and looking at the grandfather clock next to her to check the time. It was 4:05 AM. Nearly 5 hours had passed since she told Regulus he could sleep for one.
“Merlin,” Lily gasped, “I must’ve fallen asleep after you.”
Regulus looked at her grimly and stood up.
“Would you like some tea?” He asked.
“Er- do you even know where the tea is or even how to make it?” Lily questioned
“No no. Oh Merlin no. I have someone who can do it for us.”
Lily started to question who he had in mind angrily, but Regulus cut her off.
“Kreacher?” Asked Regulus timidly to the air
“Who?” Asked Lily as there was a POP and a very old, ugly house elf stood before her, wearing a silver locket around his neck with the initials S.S carved into it.
“This is Kreacher,” Regulus explained, “He's my family's house-elf, but nobody really likes him or uses him but me.”
Lily nodded along, gaping at the creature in front of her. She was used to the Potter's house-elf, he was quite old but not as old as Kreacher was.
“Kreacher, could you please make me and Lily some tea?” Regulus asked the house-elf politely.
“Oh, yes master Black. Right away.” And Kreacher scurried away into the kitchen.
Lily looked at Regulus, not really getting a good look at him until now. He was paler than when she last saw him at the funeral, and had very heavy eye bags. His once tidy, black curly hair was now a tangled mess that went to his shoulders and clearly hadn't been treated in quite some time. His gray-blue eyes that once shone were now dull and dead.
Regulus caught Lily staring at him and cleared his throat, uncomfortable by the ginger.
“Er?” Regulus started, looking at Lily
“Why did you come here?” Lily demanded, staring into Regulus’ eyes.
“Why dont we go into the kitchen and i'll explain everything.” Regulus pushed, slowly walking towards the small hallway, which was lined with posters of various musicians like David Bowie, T-REX, Queen, Joy Division, Ramones, and ABBA. It also had pictures of the couple, and of their friends.
Lily nodded at Regulus and led him into the small kitchen, only stopping to glance at a picture of her late-baby Harry riding around on the little toy broomstick that he loved, his black hair pointing every which way and James chasing after him while Lily laughed. Lily looked at her feet while walking the rest of the way into the kitchen.
Regulus and Lily entered the kitchen, where Kreacher had cups of steaming hot tea set out for them.
“Thank you, Kreacher.” Regulus spoke as he sat down at the table and took a sip of his tea.
“Yes, thank you, Kreacher.” Lily whispered, taking her seat across from Regulus and sipping her tea from the red mug that had a Gryffindor lion on it.
“So.” Lily demanded, “WHY are you here?”
Regulus sipped his steaming tea and slowly swallowed it before answering.
“I need you for something.” Regulus answered, taking another sip of his tea
“For what?” Lily pressed, “What exactly do you need MY help for? Me? A hopeless widow that apparently everyone thinks needs sheltered from the outside world.”
Regulus looked up from his mug and into Lily's eyes.
“I want you to help me stop The Dark Lord.”
Lily choked on her tea, spilling it all over her sweater
“WHAT?” Lily breathed, taking napkins from Kreacher, who helped clean up her spilled tea
“Y-you want ME to help YOU stop V-voldemort?!”
Regulus looked at her for a bit and nodded.
“Yes.” He spoke simply, causing Lily to drop the napkins she was using to wipe up the drink.
Lily shook her head, “Why in Merlin's name do you need ME to help you with that?”
Regulus shook his head, “Because. I know you want revenge. I know you want to kill him for what he did. Kill them all. You want to kill that piece of vermin trash Pettigrew for what he did to you. To James. To Harry…” Regulus finished, letting that information sink into Lily.
“I-” Was all Lily could muster.
Regulus smiled and looked at his slender hands, then took his mug in his hands and drank the rest of it.
“I know you’ll do it, Lily. I know you will.” Regulus answered shortly and stood up, rinsing his mug in the sink and setting it on the drying rack.
“I’ll go find someplace else to stay. Please, just think about it.” Regulus begged, turning the door handle to the kitchen door.
“Wait.” Lily called, looking at Regulus.
“I'll do it.”
Regulus stopped walking with his hand on the doorknob.
“Really?” He asked, grateful he wouldn’t have to do it alone.
“I’ll do it.” Lily gasped, “I’ll help you stop V-voldemort.”
Regulus nodded and walked back to the kitchen table, sitting down in front of Lilly.
“Okay, here’s the plan.”
Lily sighed and folded her hands, looking at Regulus.
“Kreacher?” called Regulus “Could you please make us some breakfast?”
“Oh yes of course Master Regulus. Right away!”
Kreacher snapped his fingers and disappeared.
“So, you were telling me the plan?” asked Lily
“Oh yea, okay so, I have had this plan in mind for quite some time. I was actually going to go through with it like 2 years ago, but something came up and I couldn’t.”
Lily nodded along to what he was saying
“So, you’ve probably heard the rumors going around at meetings for the order about how, when I left the Death Eaters, I took something of The Dark Lords. Well the item was a locket.”
Lily scoffed, assuming Regulus was joking, but went somber when he looked at her grimly.
“A locket!?” Lily asked, shocked.
“A locket” Regulus confirmed, “Well this locket isn’t just a locket. It’s something called a Horcrux. Which is basically a part of His soul.”
Lily widened her eyes “what do you mean ‘basically a part of his skull’!? I mean, I’ve heard of Horcrux’s but i’ve never actually studied them before.”
Regulus looked at his fingers grimly “A Horcrux is created to achieve immortality by splitting said wizards soul into pieces. In The Dark Lords case, seven pieces.”
Lily gasped and put her hand to her mouth “seven!?” she whispered.
“Seven.” Regulus said grimly, “I have word that he has one in Ravenclaws Diadem. And the one in the locket. But, the locket I have is not the real one, but a fake. There is, however, a map to the real on inside of it. The locket is the one around Kreachers neck right now.”
Lily remembered the silver locket around the house elf’s neck.
“S-so we have to find the real locket, and destroy it?” Lily asked
“Yes.”
“B-but how will we destroy it? What destroys a piece of SOUL?” Lily stood up, pacing back and forth across the table from Regulus, who had his face in his hands.
“A Basilisk fang. The venom should destroy it.”
Lily stopped pacing and stared at the pale boy.
“Where the fuck are we going to get a basilisk fang?” Shrieked Lily, worried about how they are going to pull this plan together. Regulus just looked at her and then at the table.
“Hogwarts.”
Lily put her hand on her forehead and laughed
“Why- What- how the FUCK do you know that!?”
Regulus stood up slowly
“Ever heard of the Chamber of Secrets?”
Lily froze and started at Regulus. Suddenly, there was a POP and Kreacher walked down the hall into the kitchen, hands full of bags of ingredients. Regulus and Lily stared at the elf set the bag on the counter and start to make food. Lily jumped when he dropped a spoon, and looked at Regulus.
“The Chamber of Secrets is a myth. It’s not real. Salazar Slytherin did not make a hidden chamber under the bloody school.”
Regulus looked at her,
“Remember the bathroom with Moaning Myrtle?” He asked timidly
Lilly nodded, “Yea…? On the second floor?”
Regulus nodded slowly and accepted a full english breakfast from Kreacher, who had ended up using magic to finish the food. He also set down a plate in front of Lily and the two started eating, scraping plates filling the silence.
“Yes, the bathroom on the second floor,” Answered Regulus, in between bites “That’s the entrance to it.”
Lily scoffed and nearly chocked on her food, “What do you mean, the entrance?”
Regulus swallowed his food “It’s the entrance to the Chamber. We just need to learn Parsletounge and then we can, er, open it.”
Lily started at him, mouth full of food.
“Master Regulus…” Kreacher spoke timidly
Regulus looked at him “Yes Kreacher?”
“Kreacher knows how to speak in the tongue of the snake.”
