October 31, 1981
It was a few days since the Potters had seen Remus and Sirius, but it was also the full moon and Remus had to go somewhere for it. Early in the morning, Lily got a letter from Mary which only had a few words, “Benjy gone. Mad-Eye found pieces. Not with us.”
Lily wanted to go confort Mary, but James told her it was too risky, and Dumbledore came to the Potters to tell them to stay in one place for the time being because it is too risky with Voldemort gaining more power everyday.
It was night and Lily was upstairs, getting ready for bed after giving Harry a bath and sending him downstairs to James, when she heard a crash and James yelled “LILLY, IT'S HIM, HE’S HERE! COME AND GET HARRY! ILL HOLD HIM OFF”
Lily ran downstairs and grabbed Harry from James just in time to see him, Voldemort, walking up their front path.
Lily ran upstairs, comforting a whimpering Harry, ran to the nursery, put Harry in his crib and pushed a heavy dresser in front of the door, barricading them inside the room.
From downstairs, Lily could hear James yelling at Voldemort, though she couldn't hear what he was saying, when she heard a loud bang, crash and heard a body crumpling to the floor, she knew James, her husband and best friend, was gone. Lily raised a shaky hand to her mouth to hide her cries, and turned to Harry, kneeling down in front of his crib. She whispered to him, comforting the baby who hadn't made a sound.
She heard footsteps in the hall and covered Harry with her body as the dresser exploded, along with the door, and among the dust a wreckage walked in a pale Voldemort, wand raised.
“Step away from the boy” Voldemort hissed at Lilly, his slit eyes shining red.
“No!” Lilly yelled, tears running down her pale face, “No! Take me, kill me, please spare Harry!” She shielded her baby from the view of Voldemort.
“No, stupid girl, step aside.” Voldemort said as he tried to push Lily to the side.
“NO! Spare him, kill me!” Lilly tried to push Voldemort away, but he managed to shove her out of the way, where she hit her head on a piece of the destroyed dresser, everything fading to black as she saw Voldemort raising his wand at Harry, and muffled a curse.
Lily woke up to someone cradling her in their arms, crying.
She opened her eyes and caught a glimpse of the disgusting greasy hair and oily hooked nose.
Severus.
She sat up straight and locked eyes with him. Severus gasped, “L-lily, you're alive!” he laughed and opened his arms, expecting her to jump into them.
She slid away from him and pulled herself to her feet.
“Get out of here.” she whispered at him.
“But Lily-” Severus started, walking to her.
“NO! Get out get out GET OUT” she finally yelled, pulling her wand out and shooting curse after curse at him. Snape dodged them and took one sad look at her before disappearing into a cloud of black smoke.
The memories of last night came flooding back to her. Voldemort. In the house. James.
“Oh no” She moaned, burying her face in her hands, her fire-red hair falling to her shoulders. Lily fell to her knees and crawled to the crib where Harry was just hours before, only to find it exploded.
His tiny blanket in pieces.
He was gone.
Lily stifled a sob with her shaking hand and pulled herself to her feet to find James.
As she walked into the hall she saw someone with long curly black hair walk through the door, whispering “no, no no.” and stopping as he saw the body on the floor. Lily looked at who Sirius was staring at and gasped.
It was James.
Her husband. Her best friend.
Gone.
Harry and James. Gone.
Her baby and her best friend. Gone.
Killed.
Murdered.
Lilly collapsed and sobbed, startling Sirius, who hadn't seen her yet.
“Lily” Sirius whispered, crawling up the stairs to Lily.
“W-was he here?” Did h-he do this?” Sirius gasped, clutching a sobbing and shaking Lily while staring at the body of his best friend.
Lily nodded.
“W-where's Harry?” Sirius asked, knowing he didn't want to know the answer.
“G-gone” Lilly sobbed “Both o-of them. G-gone” and she cried into his shirt. Sirius held her in his arms and kissed her head, tears falling down his face.
After a few minutes, they heard a crash from the front gate and Sirius leapt up, wand in his hand pointing at a pale-faced Remus, who looked from Sirius and Lily to James’ body on the ground. Putting a shaky hand to his mouth, Remus let out a small gasp and silently walked up the stairs, tears running down his face, he looked at Sirius, who slowly nodded and collapsed to his knees, grabbing Lily again.
Remus understood both Harry and James were gone, and grabbed Lily and Sirius in his arms and the three held each other until the sun rose, the distorted record playing the same lyric over and over again...
"slipping though my finger all the time..."
