Chapter 6
The castle door swung open. A tall black-haired witch in emerald green robes stood there with a stern face. Harry’s first thought was not to cross her while Deliiah’s thoughts were practically the complete opposite with her thoughts being that she was dignified but in a cool way.
“Here are the first years Professor McGonagall.” Hagrid said.
“I will take it from here, Hagrid.” She replied. She pulled the door wide open. The hallway was large enough to fit a full floor plan in. It was lined with torches along the walls that led to the almost unseeable ceiling. In front of all the students stood a set of marble staircases. Professor McGonagall led them over to a chamber off of the hallway with the sounds of other students who must have already arrived on the other floors overhead.
“Welcome to Hogwarts.” Professor McGonagall said, “The start of term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats you must be sorted into your houses. The sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be like your family within Hogwarts. The four houses are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. I shall return when we are ready for you. Please wait quietly.” Harry started to straighten his robes and Ron tried to rub a bunch of gray stuff off of his nose. It was completely silent except for Hermione Granger who was whispering to other students about all the spells she had learned over the summer. Delilah meanwhile was fixing her hair by pulling her braid to the front of her shoulder and adjusting the small pieces of hair lining her face. After a little while and a few ghosts they made their way into the great hall.
“When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted.” Professor Mcgonagall said, “Abbott Hannah.” A pink faced girl with blonde pigtails walked up and sat on the stool and after a few moments-
“HUFFLEPUFF” The said table erupted into cheers as the girl went and sat at the hufflepuff table.
“Black Delilah”
The hat seemed to ponder more than it did with the others. “You seem to align with a lot of houses. Hmm?”
“I don’t care, just not slytherin.” Delilah said under her breath. Her gray eyes curiously scanned each of the tables.
“Hmm, already educated about the houses I see, I know just where to put you! RAVENCLAW” Delilah let out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding and walked over to the table as they cheered.
“Bones Susan”
“HUFFLEPUFF”
“Boot Terry”
“RAVENCLAW”
“Brocklehurst, Mandy went to Ravenclaw too, while Brown, Lavender became the first Gryffindor.
“Dolohov Igor”
“SLYTHERIN” Delilah was relieved that she didn’t end up in that house. If that was the “evil” house like some have said, she knew who was going to end up in there. Her cousin. Even just looking at them she thought some of them looked evil.
After a few more names Hermione Granger was called. She practically sprinted up to the hat and put it on her head.
“GRYFFINDOR” Delilah could practically hear Ron’s annoyance all the way across the hall at her table.
After a few more names “Kaldor Korban” was called.
“SLYTHERIN”
“Malfoy Draco” The hat was barely even on his head before it said
“SLYTHERIN” Delilah felt about as surprised as if she were told that gravity works.
“Potter Harry.” The whole hall went silent. The hat was placed on Harry’s head. Delilah knew he couldn’t be Slytherin. Even though she had only known him for less than a day she believed in him too much for that to happen.
“Better be- GRYFFINDOR” Delilah felt a weight being lifted off her chest as she cheered. Harry barely even noticed that he received the loudest cheer yet. Then the names continued.
“Learly Purnima” ,
“HUFFLEPUFF”
“Weasley Ron”
“GRYFFINDOR”
The next two were a pair of twins, the ones at the station. “Windsor Julian”
“GRYFFINDOR”
“Windsor Sebastian”
“RAVENCLAW” Delilah felt a sense of joy knowing that she wouldn’t be completely alone.
A few more names were called, as she was joined by Sebastian and after Dumbledore’s yearly speech they started to eat.
