First year, chapter 2
“Well you’re the love of my life
And then you gorge me with a knife
And I’m blue”
Sam knew more the Remus thought.
Sam knew her father was Sirius Black.
She knew he was a murderer and a Death Eater.
She also knew her dad never told her this, and she didn’t think he ever was planning on it.
Sam had made her way onto the train, passing by crowded compartments filled with kids her age and older. It was loud and chaotic, and it made Sam feel slightly overwhelmed. She finally found an open compartment with only one boy sitting by himself.
Sam opened the door and poked her head in. “Mind if I sit in here?” She asked, hoping he would say yes. The boy, who had been looking out the window, turned to her, looking at her through his round glasses.
He shrugged and gestured to the seat across from him. Sam put her trunk in the overhead compartment, then sat across from the boy, holding Leo in her lap as he curled up and purred.
“Thanks,” Sam said to him, then held out her hand. “I’m Sam Lupin-Black.”
The boy smiled and shook her hand carefully. “I’m Harry Potter.”
Sam’s smile fell. She pulled back, looking out the window as she bit her lip. Sam new very little about how her father ended up in Azkaban, but she did know it was something to do with Harry Potter.
They both were silent for quite some time, just watching as the train passed countrysides, and listening to the soft rumble of the engine.
“I like your cat,” Harry said to her, obviously trying to start a conversation. “What’s its name?”
Sam looked at Harry, her heart pounding. Did he not recognize her last name? “Its Leo.”
Harry smiled, then reached over and began petting him. Thats when the door to the compartment opened. Both Sam and Harry turned to see who it was, and Sam’s stomach dropped.
Ron Weasley definitely recognized her, giving her a brief glance, then turned to Harry.
“Is it okay if I sit in here? Everywhere else is taken.” He said to Harry, ignoring Sam.
“Not at all,” Harry responded. Ron sat next to Sam. Sam tried giving him a small smile, but he just rolled his eyes at her, making Sam feel small.
“I’m Ron, by the way. Ron Weasley.” Ron told Harry.
“I’m Harry, Harry Potter.”
Ron’s eyes grew wide, then he turned to Sam, and Sam wished she could disappear.
“What the bloody hell are you ding in here with him?!” He asked, his voice raised. Sam stuck her chin out and raised her head.
“Shove it, Weasley!” She said, the last year of anger coming out of her mouth. “I’m not going to fucking kill him!”
Ron scoffed, then turned to Harry. “Do you know who she is?” He asked him. Harry looked rather confused. He looked between Ron and Sam, then shrugged.
“She’s Sam?” He tried. Ron scoffed again, then leaned in close to Harry.
“Her father is Sirius Black!”
Sam ducked her head and closed her eyes, feeling that shame come over her. She waited for Harry to react, but he didn’t.
“Who’s that?” Harry asked. Both Sam and Ron frowned. How could he not know who Sirius Black was.
“He’s the man that betrayed your parents!” Ron answered. Thats when Harry’s face broke into a sad frown.
Sam stood, looking between the boys. “I’m sorry I sat in here!” She shouted angrily, pulling her trunk down from the compartment. Then she turned back to the boys. “Also, I am not my father! Just because he made a mistake ad is evil dose not mean I am to! So, fuck you both!”
And with that, she stormed out of the compartment, searching for a new one. It didn’t take long for her to find one. This one had another boy in it. He was alone, looking down in a book. He had platinum blond hair, and his face was in a frown. Sam didn’t even ask if she could sit in with him. She threw the door open, startling the boy. She put her trunk up and flopped down in the seat across from the boy.
The boy closed his book and raised his eyebrows. “Can I help you?” He asked. Sam rolled her eyes.
“I’m not in the mood.” She mumbled to him. The boy gave a small laugh, leaning back in his seat.
“What’s your name?” He asked her. Sam really didn’t want to tell another person her name and have them judge her, but then the boy said his name. “I’m Draco Malfoy.”
The Malfoy family was a known pure blood family that had a hand in dark magic. Their family was mostly Death Eaters, and Draco seemed to be waiting for her to say something about that.
“I’m Sam Lupin-Black.”
Dracos eyebrows went up again. “Black? As in Sirius Black?” He asked. Sam looked out the window, refusing to answer. Draco dropped it.
“So, what house are you hoping to get into?” He asked, changing the subject. Sam shrugged.
“I know my dad wants me to get into Gryffindor, that was his house, but I don’t want to be like my dad,” She said, then looked up at him. “What about you?” She asked.
“Oh, I’ll be in Slytherin.” He told her confidently. Sam frowned.
“How do you know that?” She asked him.
“Because everyone in my family is a Slytherin.”
He seemed convinced, so Sam dropped it, and continued to watch the trees pass outside of the window. She also was able to study Draco a little more. He was dressed well, letting everyone know his family had lots of money. His eyes were grey, much like her own, and his face seemed to always be in a frown. As Sam looked at him a little more closely, sh could spot a purple bruise just under the collar of his shirt. It was hard to see, but Sam was able to spot it.
And it made her wonder just what happened in the Malfoy house.
