First year, chapter 3
Sam stood there in the great hall, looking around and waiting for her name to be called. She felt a pit of nerves in her stomach, and she knew the other students in her year must be feeling the same way.
Sam stood with Draco, both of them staying close to each other since the train. Harry and Ron had spotted her when they entered the great hall. Ron had given her a sour look, Harry doing the same. Sam had quickly turned away from them, instead watching as the other students were sorted into their houses. Sam didn’t have to wait long for her name to be called.
“Samantha Lupin-Black.” McGonagall called. Sam could hear the whispered rise, and some of the teachers seemed to be curios as well, leaning on the edge of their seats.
Sam made her way carefully to the stool, and McGonagall placed the sorting hat on her head.
“Ahhh,” The hat said, startling Sam. “A Black and a Lupin. Quite the pair. Both of your fathers are Gryffindors, yet one of your fathers come from a long line of Slytherin. Hmmm, you do have the courage of a Gryffindor, yet there is something else here, something that reminds me of your uncle, Regulus Black. Hmmm, yes, better make it… SLYTHERIN!!!”
The hall was quite besides Draco’s clapping, and a few of the other Slytherin. Sam hopped off the stool, trying to ignore the shocked and horrified faces. She passed Draco, who was smiling. He leaned close to her and whispered. “See you soon.”
She sat at the Slytherin table, and was greeted immediately by Blaise Zabini. The boy shook her hand and sat by her.
“Welcome to Slytherin.” He said, beaming. Sam gave a half smile, trying to hide the fact that she was absolutely horrified to be in Slytherin. She couldn’t even imagine what her dad would say when he found out. She could see Ron and Harry standing side by side, whispering things. She also noticed that a girl was with them, whispering and pointing at Sam as well.
Sam felt her cheeks heat, and she laid her head ontop of her arms that were rested on the table. Of course, Draco was put in Slytherin, and Harry, Ron, and the girl (who Sam learned was named Hermione Granger) were put in Gryffindor. The Gryffindors had cheered loudly when Harry was put in with them, even some of the teachers looked proud to see their golden boy in the ‘right’ house.
Draco sat next to Sam as they began eating. He was chatting about how he hoped they would be in the same classes, an that he was hoping to get a letter in the morning from his father, wanting him to say how proud he was. Sam didn’t exactly listen, and she wished she could enjoy the food, but she wasn’t exactly having the best day, and if she was honest, she missed her dad.
Dinner ended, and the were led down to the dungeon where their common room was. The common room was dimly lit by lanterns hanging from the ceiling. The room was different shades of greens and grays. The girls were pointed to their dormitory, and the boys to theirs. Sam followed the stairs up to her dorm, and found three other girls already up there. They ignored her as she went to her bed and looked through her things to make sure they all were there. What she was really looking for was her Walkman and her mixtapes her dad had made for her. She really wanted to listen to some T.Rex.
She was able to locate them, and she immediately put the headphones on and put her tape in. As soon as she heard Mambo Sun, she felt herself start to relax. She grabbed her pajamas out of her trunk and headed for the bathroom. She got changed while she continued to listen to music. Then, instead of heading for her bed, she went back down to the common room, where she found Draco sitting by the fire place, an book in his hand once more.
Sam pulled her headphones down so they hung around her neck, and sat down next to Draco. She had been hoping he would be down here, he was the only person she knew at the moment, and even if she had only met him that day, he was still a familiar face.
Draco put his book down when she sat by him, then he frowned as he looked at her Walkman. “What is that?” He asked her. She looked down at the thing in her hand, then back up at him.
“It a muggle thing that plays music,” She explained simply, and seeing his confusion, she took the headphones from around her neck. “Here, I’ll show you.”
She put the headphones on him then pressed play. His face was still confused, but he also had this strange look that was painted across his features. He pulled the headphones ooff and handed them back to Sam.
“I’m not supposed to be around muggle things.” He told her, looking as though he didn’t want t, but also looking disgusted. Sam took her headphones back, and before she could ask what Draco had meant, he changed the subject.
“So, how are you liking Slytherin?” He asked her, pulling his legs up under him. Sam huffed out a long breath.
“I mean, its not exactly what I wanted, but I guess its better then Gryffindor.” She told him. Draco frowned.
“Well, what house did you want?” He asked her, looking slightly confused. Sam shrugged.
“I don’t really know. I guess Ravenclaw would have been nice, or even Hufflepuff, but being in Slytherin isn’t exactly helping the fact that everyone hates me.” She explained. Draco shrugged.
“You can’t change their opinion about you. Eventually you just have to be that horrible person they want you to be.” He said to her. Sam sighed, slumping into the couch further.
“I just wish people would get to know me before they decided I was horrible.” She mumbled. They both were silent for a moment, staring into the flames of the fire as they danced around. Sam tried not to think about the letter she would probably get, or the disappointment her dad must be feeling, so instead, she decided to strike up another conversation with Draco.
“What happened there?” She asked, pointing to the ugly scar that circled his wrists. Draco looked down to see what she was pointing at, then he quickly pulled his sleeve down to cover the scar. He cleared his throat, looking at her, and Sam could see the small bit of fear in his eyes. He turned away from her and looked back into the fire.
“Its nothing.” He mumbled. Sam frowned, knowing he was lying. But, there was nothing she could do to make him tell her. So instead of pushing, she decided to head back up the stairs to her room.
All her dorm mates were all crowded onto one bed, talking and laughing. When Sam shut the door, they all fell silent and looked to her. Sam made her way to her bed, ignoring them, and pulling her curtain closed. Leo was laying on her pillow, sleeping peacefully. She cuddled close to the cat, trying to push away that awful feeling in her stomach as she pressed play on her Walkman.
The music calmed her and comforted her. She laid there and listened as ‘Heroes’ by David Bowie came on. Immediately her mind went to her dad. This had been his favorite song back in the day, or so she had seen. She had found the Heroes album in the garage under their flat, with a handwritten note written on it. It had said,
‘Happy birthday Remus. I could never ask for a better husband and best friend. I know you love Heroes, James told me about the incident when you had nearly broken one of Lily’s vases just to get to the radio, so I thought you would like this.
I love you to the moon and back,
-Sirius
Sam had never been aloud to go into the garage, but just about a year ago, her dad had gone out, and she had grown board, so she had gone down to see what the big secret was. When she opened the door, she found boxes filled with clothing and nicknacks, and she had also found a motorcycle. She had gone through the boxes and found a record player, as well as loads of vinyls. She had decided to take those upstairs.
As for the clothes, there was one in particular that had caught her eye. It was a leather jacket, a nice one. It looked a little worn, but still n marvelous shape. She had went to try it on, but stopped when she saw a name written on the inside of the collar. Sirius Black.
She had put the jacket back, and then stood in shock when she realized she as standing in the middle of her the garage filled with her father’s things. She left instantly, and nearly put the record player and vinyls back, but then she saw her dad rounding the corner of the street, and she knew it was too late. So, the record player and vinyls stayed in her room, where she hoped her dad would never find them.
Remus felt so lonely without Sam at home. He had tried to keep things normal without her. He had gone to work, then home, where he sat at the table, and ate dinner alone, then sat on the couch and tried reading for a little while. But His mind was on his daughter. He wondered how she was doing. He wondered what house she had gotten in. He had always imagined she would be in Gryffindor, but he also felt she would do good in Ravenclaw, like his father.
As he continued to think of her, he only grew to miss her more. And soon he found himself standing and going into her room. He sat on her bed and looked around. She had band and movie posters on her walls. She had pictures of him and her together on birthdays or holidays. Seeing her smiling face in those photos made him want to go to Hogwarts and be with her. He didn’t like how they had parted, she had barley even looked at him, and it was driving him mad. He wished he could go back in time to when she was younger and looked at him like he was the king of the world. Now she looked at him like he had just killed someone.
Remus took a long breath, and went to stand when something caught his eye. It was the vinyl on the top of her shelf. He recognized it. He stood and his breath caught in his throat when he saw that iconic David Bowie pose, and the familiar handwriting across the top if it.
This was his vinyl, the one Sirius had given to him on his birthday. And now Sam had it.
