First year, chapter 1
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen…
Remus looked at the clock in his kitchen as he sipped his morning coffee. They had about fifteen minutes before they had to be out the door if they wanted to be on time. He could faintly hear one of Sam’s T.Rex vinyls playing from her room. He could recognize the song, “Lean woman blues” remembering how that song had always been playing in his dorm back at Hogwarts. Remus frowned, clearing his throat and turning to put his empty coffee mug into the sink.
“Sam!” He called, going over to the dinning room table and grabbing his work bag. “We have to go!”
He heard the music stop, and not a moment later, Sam came out, her curly black hair draped over her shoulders, and her gray eyes calm and bright. Everyday, she looked more and more like him, and every day, it hurt Remus more and more.
Sam was carrying her trunk in one hand, and her gray cat, Leo, in her other arm. Remus checked the clock again, then turned to his daughter.
“Do you have everything?” He asked her. She nodded, putting Leo down for a moment and petting the purring cat gently. She then looked up at her father.
“Do you have the carrier?” She asked, refusing to the cat carrier Remus was supposed to pick up from the store a week ago. Remus hesitated, realizing he had forgotten. Sam seemed to have guessed and rolled her eyes, huffing.
“You can’t be serious!” She groaned, making Remus’s mind instantly think of Sirius. He seemed to be doing too much of that recently.
“Its alright,” He told her, still kicking himself for forgetting, but Remus had just gotten a new job, and he also had been writing back and forth with Dumbledore and the ministry. Apparently, there had been some hesitance with allowing Sam to go to Hogwarts.
When Dumbledore had written him and told him, Remus had nearly gone to the school and demand to know why. Dumbledore had said that there had been some parents that had kids that would be in the same year as Sam that didn’t want her around their kids. Remus knew this was Sirius’s fault. They didn’t want them around Sam because having a Death Eater as a father was not a great thing, as Remus was learning. He was also learning that a lot of people no longer trusted him either because he had also married a Death Eater.
Thankfully though, Remus was able to convince them the Sam was no threat, and that she had no contact with Sirius. Remus didn’t know why, or how Sam would even be able to have contact with Sirius, he was in Azkaban, no one was aloud in or out, and plus, Sam didn’t even know about Sirius.
Yes, Remus knew he should tell his daughter that her father was a Death Eater and murderer, but Remus never could force himself to tell her such an awful thing. Of course, Sam knew Remus was gay, and that she had another father, but sh had never asked, so Remus never told.
“I’m afraid you’ll just have t hold Leo on the train.” Remus told his eleven year old daughter who was giving him a sour look.
Sam had been having quite the audited recently. It seemed Remus could never do anything right anymore. Remus knew it was just the regular ‘preteen stage’ but it still hurt whenever his daughter kuldip mumble under her breath about how awful he was. There was one time in particular that they had gotten into a heated argument that had ended with Sam shouting at him that she wished he was dead. Remus had sat on the edge of his bed for a hour, trying to understand where he was going wrong.
“Come on, we’ll be late.” He told Sam, taking the trunk from her hand and leading her out of their flat.
They made it to Kings Cross Station with a few minutes to spare. Remus lead Sam to Platform nine and three quarters, feeling a sense of nostalgia. The platform was crowded with families, saying goodby, kids hanging out of the windows, waving or crying. Remus turned to Sam, bending down and fixing her wrinkled shirt.
“Alright, listen,” He said to her, holding the sides of her face. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to look into those grey eyes. “If anything happened, or if you just want to come home, just send me an owl, or tell a professor. I’ll come, and we can go home, or anywhere you want.”
He was rambling, and by the way Sam rolled her eyes, he could tell she didn’t care for what he was saying. Although it hurt, Remus was able to be glad that she was embarrassed by a owing parent, rather then being dropped off by a matron that didn’t give two shits about her.
Remus stood back straight and pulled her close to his chest, hugging her fiercely and kissing the top of her head. “I love you.” He told her, and was met with an, ‘Mmhmm.’
Remus sighed and let her go. She gave him an annoyed smile and turned to walk towards the train. Remus watched her go, standing there alone. He swallowed the lump in his throat, reminding himself that he had promised not to get emotional.
So, Remus turned away from the train ad left the platform, getting ready to spend the next school year all alone.
